2008 PBA Senior Tour #1
Traber takes Day One lead in 2008 PBA Senior Tour opener
Capri Bowling Lanes in Dayton, Ohio (April 22-29, 2008)
Dale Traber warmed up for the 2008 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour by bowling in – and winning – a PBA Regional Tour event in Missouri last weekend. After winning his 37th career PBA Regional Tour on his favorite oil pattern, Traber got off to a hot start in search of his first career PBA Senior Tour title on that same pattern Sunday, taking the lead after day one of the PBA Senior Dayton Classic at Capri Bowling Lanes.
Traber won a PBA Midwest Region event in Raytown, Mo., on the Cheetah oil pattern last weekend, defeating Bryan Goebel for his 37th regional victory which ranks third all time. In just his second year of PBA Senior Tour eligibility and third career event on the senior circuit, Traber started the season-opening event with a 1,834 eight-game pinfall for a 229.25 average.
"This is my pattern, I just fling it up the outside," Traber (Cedarburg, Wis.) said. "I had a couple struggles toward the end where the lanes broke down and I had to make a big move. It may not look like a big move to the other guys, in fact they're making fun of me, but for me it was a big move."
Traber opened the day with a 194 which proved to be his only game below 200 on the day. He bounced back with a 262 in game two and a 279 in game four to take the lead. After games of 207 and 206 in the sixth and seventh games, respectively, Traber made his move and finished with a 238 to take the overall lead.
Just one of many talented bowlers in a strong PBA Senior Tour field, Traber feels confident he can compete all season with the likes of PBA Hall of Famers Tom Baker, David Ozio and Mark Roth.
"I think I'm ready to compete with these guys. I feel good about it," Traber said. "I got ready last week by bowling the regional on the same pattern and winning that certainly didn't hurt anything."
Defending champion Sam Maccarone, who won last year's event at Capri Bowling Lanes in his rookie season, got off to a strong start, finishing second with 1,828.
Michael Llaneza (Columbus, Ohio) finished third with 1,817, Ron Mohr (Eagle River, Alaska) was fourth with 1,813 and Patrick King (Yankton, S.D.) rounded out the top five with 1,789.
The entire field will return Monday for another eight games of qualifying which get underway at 9 a.m. ET. The top 32 bowlers based on 16-game total pinfall will advance to single-elimination match play on Tuesday.
The final two bowlers will roll-off for the $8,000 top-prize Tuesday evening at Capri Bowling Lanes.
