2008 PBA Senior Tour #1
Maccarone targets back-to-back titles in PBA Senior Dayton Classic
Capri Bowling Lanes in Dayton, Ohio (April 22-29, 2008)
Sam Maccarone looks forward to the prospects of not only winning his second Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour title on Tuesday, but also the possibility of putting his daughter through college. The defending champion Maccarone averaged 226.13 on Monday to lead qualifying with a 3,637 16-game pinfall and earn the top seed for match play in the 2008 PBA Senior Dayton Classic at Capri Bowling Lanes.
By finishing in the top eight, Maccarone earned a bye through the first two rounds of match play and will need to only win three matches to reach the title match where a special $50,000 bonus is on the line.
Capri Bowling Lanes proprietor Mike Irwin has offered $50,000 to any bowler who can fire a perfect 300 game in Tuesday evening's title match. While this week's event is taking place on the normally high-scoring Cheetah pattern, just one 300 game has been thrown thus far.
Nevertheless, Maccarone looks forward to the chance to step up to the line with so much riding on every shot.
"My first priority is bowling for the title. The $50,000 would come second, but that would be pretty nerve racking," Maccarone (Glassboro, N.J.) said. "I choked today when there was just $100 (300-game bonus) on the line. I have a daughter going to college and that would be an awesome feat to win the title, shoot 300 in the title match and help my daughter go to a college of her choice."
Irwin, meanwhile, looks forward to the excitement and buzz the incentive will create at Capri Bowling Lanes Tuesday evening.
"I just woke up Thursday with this idea. I have a lot of inspiration when I'm sleeping," Irwin said. "It's good for bowling. It gives quite an incentive and it will be fun for the spectators. It's a great way to start the Senior Tour and a great way to provide an added incentive to these professional bowlers."
Maccarone, a two-time champion on the Denny's PBA Tour who won the event last year in Dayton in his rookie season, has been in a groove all week.
"I'm going to tell Mike to look for some real estate for me," Maccarone joked about Irwin. "It's two different oil patterns from this year to last year – we were on Shark last year – so I don't know what it is about this place. I was just working hard to grind it out early and get a spot in the top eight because I didn't have anything."
After finishing Sunday's first round second overall, Maccarone got off to a slow start Monday, averaging just 200.33 over the first three games. He made a ball change over the final four games, however, which resulted in games of 229, 266, 277 and 219.
"The first few games I tried to play like yesterday and it didn't work," Maccarone said. "I changed balls but wasn't comfortable and was really struggling. I went back to the ball I used yesterday and in the fifth game the lanes started hooking more so I moved in further. I was really swinging it right and finished strong the last four."
Also in a solid position to advance to the finals is Bill Henson, who averaged 249.13 on Monday to move from 33rd to second and secure two byes. Henson (Westerville, Ohio) started the day with a 289 and never looked back, also firing two games of 279 along the way.
The other six bowlers who earned byes were Michael Llaneza (Columbus, Ohio), Dale Traber (Cedarburg, Wis.), Ron Mohr (Eagle River, Alaska), Dale Csuhta (Wadsworth, Ohio), Henry Gonzalez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Patrick King (Yankton, S.D.).
The 2007 PBA Senior Rookie of the Year Sam Zurich (Grant, Fla.), who fired the only 300 game of the week so far, finished ninth to just miss the byes by five pins but still advanced to match play. Three-time defending PBA Senior Player of the Year Tom Baker (King, N.C.), a PBA Hall of Famer who is exempt on the Denny's PBA Tour, finished 11th and will look to win his ninth PBA Senior Tour title.
The top 32 bowlers based on 16-game total pinfall advanced to single-elimination match play on Tuesday. Qualifiers 17-32 face off at 9 a.m. ET with the winners advancing to face qualifiers 9-16. Those winners will face the top eight from qualifying at 1:30 p.m.
The final eight bowl best-of-three at 5:30 p.m. at Capri Bowling Lanes followed immediately by the single-game semifinal and title matches. The winner will take home $8,000 with a $50,000 bonus going to a bowler if he shoots 300 in the title match.
