2008 PBA Senior Tour #2

Defending champions on their way to team up again in

The Cherry Bowl in Rockford, Ill. (May 3-5, 2008)

2007PBAS02JohnsonKossert.jpg Liz Johnson and Roger Kossert had so much success bowling in last year's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Ladies and Legends together, they're trying their best to team up again.

Defending champions Johnson and Kossert (pictured after their victory in 2007) led their respective divisions in qualifying Saturday and look primed to team up for a shot at defending their title in the Columbia 300 PBA Ladies and Legends presented by MGD 64 at The Cherry Bowl.

The Ladies and Legends features the top female bowlers and the top male bowlers 50 and older.

2008USBCWCLizJohnson_small.jpg Johnson, right, blew away not just the ladies field but she also outscored Kossert by 67 pins by compiling a 1,528 six-game pinfall. She averaged an astounding 254.67 on Saturday and leads the next-closest woman, Kelly Kulick, by almost 100 pins.

The two-time defending PBA Ladies and Legends champion pointed to last week's United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Queens, in which she finished third, as the key to her success on Saturday.

"Bowling on last week's shot makes this one seem like there's a lot more room," Johnson said of last week's difficult and low scoring conditions. "I've been able to bowl my "A" game and coming off a good performance last week, it made my swing looser and my confidence shoot up a lot."

Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) got out of the gates with a 278 and never looked back, firing a 270 in the third game and a 258 in the fifth game. Her low game of the day was a 228.

Roger_Kossert_4689.jpg Kossert (Lithia, Fla.), left, meanwhile, shot 257 his final game to take the overall lead, finishing with 1,461.

Behind Kossert is Rick Vittone (Canada) with 1,441 while Barry Mefford (Aurora, Ill.) is third with 1,420. Jerry Edwards (Wood Dale, Ill.) with 1,414 and Dave Bernhardt (Shelby Township, Mich.) with 1,402 round out the top five.

Notables include three-time defending PBA Senior Player of the Year Tom Baker (King, N.C.) in sixth with 1,395, PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia (Manalapan, N.J.) in eighth with 1,389 and last week's Dayton Classic winner Keith Sharp (Orlando, Fla.) in10th with 1,388.

On the ladies side, Kulick (Union, N.J.) fired one of two perfect 300 games on the day and finished second with 1,435. Shannon Pluhowsky (Oklahoma City, Okla.), who won one four PBA Women's Series events last season, is third with 1,411. Amy Stolz (Castle Rock, Colo.) and Joy Esterson (Annapolis, Md.), the second- and fifth-place finishers, respectively, in last week's Queens, finished fourth and sixth on Saturday. In between them was Tennelle Milligan in fifth.

Qualifying continues Sunday with three squads bowling another six games each after which the field will be cut to the top 24 for Baker-style round robin match play on Monday. Ladies and Legends will be paired up based on qualifying position, with the No. 1 lady and No. 1 legend becoming a team and so on.

The five-team stepladder finals take place Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. CT with the winning team taking home $15,000.
