Colorado team just misses lead at USBC Open Championships
Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, NM, United States (Feb. 16 - July 7, 2008)
Fueled by the highest team game and the 11th 300 of the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships, Bowlingfordumdums.com of Pritchett, Colo., moved into second place in Regular Team at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Saturday night.Bowlingfordumdums.com (From left to right- Craig Auerbach, Bob Davidson, Greg Thomas, Michael Gaither, Jerry Casebolt), Pritchett, Colo.
The group started steadily with games of 1,045 and 1,003 before Craig Auerbach's perfect game helped them to a 1,236 effort, just 30 pins shy of the highest game in USBC Open Championships history. Bowlingfordumdums.com finished with a 3,284 total and settled into second place behind Rhino for President of Pleasant View, Utah, the only other team to break 1,200 this year, which leads with 3,298.
Auerbach, a member of the 2004 Team All-Events champion and the leadoff bowler for Bowlingfordumdums.com, paced the team with a 712 series and was followed by Bob Davidson (665), Michael Gaither (651), Greg Thomas (640) and Jerry Casebolt (616).
"Rolling that 300 was a lot of fun and a proud moment," said Auerbach, who made his fifth Open Championships appearance. "A lot of people try to bowl here and a lot of people struggle. It was fun to be able to actually come through and finish the game. It'll probably be the 300 I'm most proud of for a lot of years."
But despite his personal success Saturday, the 44-year-old right-hander was even happier that it helped contribute to his team's overall success.
"Helping my team was the most satisfying part of getting this 300," said Auerbach, a two-time Brunswick World Team Challenge titlist. "My favorite part of bowling is probably the team aspect of it. I enjoy anything from doubles, to trios, to team. Singles is fun, but team is something that allows you to root for someone else to do well."
After a small letdown in the second game, the bowlers knew they needed a huge finale and believed they had the experience and the ability to make a run at it.
"Everybody just feeds off each other's games," said Casebolt, who made his 13th Open Championships appearance. "Most of us have known each other for quite a while. The chemistry and experience we have is great, and we all bowl well together. We know how to help each other line up and make the correct moves or ball changes."
Last year, at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., Bowlingfordumdums.com earned its spot as a contender on the national stage with a solid effort in team and a third place finish in Team All-Events.
"This is something we set out to do when we put this team together two years ago," said Casebolt, a 39-year-old right-hander and team captain. "We just decided to put together a team and try and win an eagle, and that's the pinnacle of the Open Championships. We came up a little short last year in Team All-Events."
Also on Saturday night, defending Regular All-Events champion Mike Rose Jr. took a huge step toward becoming the first person to win back-to-back titles with a 731 set in team. He helped Drillsheet.com, Bowlingfordumdums.com's companion team, to games of 1,119, 1,011 and 1,089 for a 3,219 total and sixth place on the leaderboard.Drillsheet.com (From left to right- Jay Nephew, Scott Terzo, Mark McClain, Mike Rose Jr., Kenneth Muscato), Rochester, N.Y.
Rose was followed by Kenneth Muscato (677), Jay Nephew (615), Mark McClain (606) and Scott Terzo (590).
Earlier in the day, Rose rolled a 299 game at the Roto Grip Sport Bowling Challenge, a special two-game side event also located inside the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Pennsylvania bowler rolls perfect game
When Dave Brill of Narvon, Pa., stepped onto the lanes at the USBC Open Championships on Sunday, he had a little extra motivation to do well and came through with the 12th perfect game of this year's event.Just before starting doubles and singles at the Albuquerque Convention Center, Brill's wife, Mandi, sent him a picture of their 2-month-old son, Braedyn, and asked Brill to bowl a 300 for him.
That was all the motivation the 27-year-old right-hander needed to bounce back from a disappointing 504 series in team Saturday. Although he started doubles with games of 171 and 185, Brill found his stride and finished with 300 for a 656 set.
"It's an amazing feeling to shoot 300 here, and with everyone in the stands watching me, it was unreal," said Brill, computer system engineer who made his third USBC Open Championships appearance. "The 11th ball was probably the hardest shot I've thrown in my life. I did get a little slow with it and it went Brooklyn, but I got a little luck and it carried, and then I was able to relax and finish with a really good shot."
Brill added games of 232, 234 and 220 for a 686 singles series and finished with a 1,846 all-events total.
"I struggled in team and early in doubles and just couldn't find a line," Brill said. "I switched balls and moved inside and was able to find something that worked. I was forcing it at first, but speed was critical, and once I calmed down, I stayed soft and let the ball do the work."
