Illinois couple takes Classified Doubles lead at USBC Open Championships
Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, NM, United States (Feb. 16 - July 7, 2008)
Jacqueline Snyder and Bill Calhoon, a married couple from Cooksville, Ill., spend their days helping bowlers find success at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships, but the pair took a major step closer to their own tournament dreams when they moved into the lead in Classified Doubles on Wednesday.Together, the couple runs the Ebonite booth at the USBC Open Championships, where they have provided advice and equipment to tournament bowlers since the event's first trip to the Albuquerque Convention Center in 2000. Unfortunately, the long hours, traveling and busy work schedule don't allow them to practice much.
Despite the lack of the practice, Snyder and Calhoon were determined to do their best on the tournament lanes and teamed up to shoot 1,282 on Wednesday. Calhoon led the way with a 644 set, while Snyder finished with a 258 game for 638. Jim Kohlman of St. Paul, Minn., and Michael Roscoe of White Bear Lake, Minn., previously held the lead with 1,196.
"This feels really nice," said Snyder, a 37-year-old right-hander who made her sixth Open Championships appearance and added 532 in singles and 449 in team for a 1,619 all-events total. "We work really hard helping other people with their bowling and bowling balls and don't get the chance to bowl much like we used to. It was a really good day. We both planned to come out here and have fun and just throw one ball at a time."
Calhoon, 54, also did well enough to move into second place in Classified All-Events. He added 642 in singles and 566 in team for a 1,852 all-events total. Jeffrey Kistler of Marion, Ind., leads with 1,887.
"This is a dream for me," said Calhoon, a right-hander who made his 16th Open Championships appearance. "I've drilled a lot of bowling balls for guys who have won eagles here, but I've never been on the leaderboard before, so today was a pretty nice thing to have happen."
Calhoon, who has had one knee replaced and multiple operations on the other, is limited in the amount of bowling he can do, and thanks to some recent work on his timing and footwork, he nearly cracked the top 10 in singles, too.
Although he ended the day sore and with an obvious limp, he was happy with his success on the lanes this year.
"I was trying my best in singles, but my knee just got stiff and I started having trouble bending it" Calhoon said. "That just comes from too many games out here for me at one time. Overall it was a great day, though. I've celebrated with a lot of guys who took home eagles or ended up with some of the top scores at the tournament with balls we drilled. Today it happened for me. "
