Colorado team fourth in Team All-Events
Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, NM, United States (Feb. 16 - July 7, 2008)
For the second consecutive year, Jerry Casebolt of Pritchett, Colo., laced up his shoes for doubles and singles competition knowing exactly what he needed to shoot to help his team into the top spot in Team All-Events at the USBC Open Championships. It is a pressure that most bowlers don't get to experience because teams typically bowl all of their events together, or at least within the same day or two. But Casebolt, who bowled team with Bowlingfordumdums.com last Saturday, was the odd man out and chose to bowl doubles and singles with some old friends from Colorado.
The scenario was the same last year in Reno, Nev., but this year, the time in-between was just five days, rather than nearly six weeks.
Casebolt entered the Albuquerque Convention Center on Thursday night needing a 1,429 six-game total to help his team past Team Pabst of Madison, Wis., which leads Team All-Events with 9,977.
The 39-year-old right-hander turned in a solid performance, but came up short with 642 in doubles and 603 in singles for 1,245. With the 616 he shot in team, Casebolt finished with a 1,861 all-events total and helped Bowlingfordumdums.com into fourth place in Team All-Events with 9,794.
"Yeah, it feels a little bit like deja vu," said Casebolt, who made his 13th Open Championships appearance. "I did not have a good look tonight at all. We followed a couple of Classified teams, and the lanes were tight. They were tighter than they were in our second game of team event last Saturday."
This year, Greg Thomas led the way for Bowlingfordumdums.com with 89 clean frames on the way to a 2,058 all-events total, and he was followed by Michael Gaither (1,988), Craig Auerbach, a member of the 2004 Team All-Events champion (1,949), Bob Davidson (1,938) and Casebolt.
"The other guys did their jobs, but I didn't do mine," Casebolt said. "I have no excuses, though. I felt like I bowled pretty good tonight and what I shot was the max I could get. I missed a couple spares and maybe could have gotten a few more pins, but it wasn't in the cards. So we'll get together again next year and try again in Vegas. We'll be back."
Last year, at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Casebolt needed even more pins than this time around, and his team eventually settled for a third-place finish in Team All-Events. After being in the same position twice, he has mixed feelings about the pressure on his shoulders.
"Knowing what you have to roll is good and bad," Casebolt said. "I mean, it's good that I knew I only had to shoot 1,429, which wasn't that much. But I wish I could have had what I had last Saturday night. I could have easily accomplished it. But tonight, the lanes were super tight."
Team All-Events includes nine-game totals for all five team members.
Wyoming couple moves into second place at USBC Open Championships
Janet and Joe Vaccari of Gillette, Wyo., have been bowling together throughout their 33-year marriage, and for the last three years, they have been doubles partners at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships. The couple's experience on the lanes together paid off at the Albuquerque Convention Center as they moved into second place in Classified Doubles with a 1,255 total Thursday night. Jacqueline Snyder and Bill Calhoon of Cooksville, Ill., lead with 1,282.
"I'm just so thrilled," said Janet, a 56-year-old juvenile diversion secretary who made her third USBC Open Championships appearance. "I can't believe we ever did it. This is an achievement for us."
Each had career-best doubles efforts. Janet led the way with 643, while Joe contributed 612. Janet added 558 in team and 543 in singles for a 1,744 all-events total, her highest by more than 100 pins. Joe finished with 544 in singles and 541 in team for 1,697.
"It was exciting that we both bowled so well and did it together," said Joe, a 59-year-old right-hander who made his fifth Open Championships appearance. "Sometimes one of us does well and the other one does not, and we feel like we let the other down. I almost did that until I came back in the last game and contributed somewhat."
Janet, who has been bowling for almost 50 years, introduced Joe to bowling when they first met nearly 37 years ago. Bowling is something they continue to enjoy nearly four decades later as they bowl together once a week in a couples league.
"We'll probably think more about it in the next couple days because, boom, it just happened," Joe said. "When we finished, I knew we'd done well. But when Janet's brother came over and told us we were in second place, I thought he was kidding. I didn't realize we had done that well."
