Michigan team makes run at top spot at USBC Open Championships

Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, NM, United States (Feb. 16 - July 7, 2008)

2008USBCOCTurboGrips1.jpg While Bob Chamberlain Sr. of The Villages, Fla., has enjoyed many individual successes during his hall of fame career, he comes from an era where team bowling thrived and there was nothing like having the undivided attention and support of four teammates behind you for ever shot.

The 59-year-old United States Bowling Congress Hall of Famer got a taste of the old days at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Tuesday when he helped Turbo Grips 1 of Chesterfield, Mich., into second place in Regular Team at the USBC Open Championships.

L-R John Bennett, Kelley Bennett, Lou Marquez, Bob Chamberlain Jr., Bob Chamberlain Sr.), Chesterfield, Mich.

The team started with games of 993 and 1,111 before adding 1,204, the third 1,200 of the year, for a 3,308 total. Team Tilt of Lawrence, Kan., leads with 3,374.

"I've been to 41 of these tournaments, and that's the best we've ever bowled," said Chamberlain, who helped Stroh's Beer of Detroit to the 1980 Regular Team title with a 3,119 total. "We all did what we had to, used the right balls and communicated on the lanes. It's really a pretty good feeling to bowl that well at this event."

Turbo Grips 1 was led by USBC Gold coach Lou Marquez, who closed with a 279 game and 689 series. He was followed by Kelley Bennett (668), Bob Chamberlain Jr. (666), Chamberlain Sr. (652) and John Bennett (633).

Chamberlain Sr. and John Bennett are three weeks into the 2008 Professional Bowlers Association Senior Tour season, but welcomed the opportunity to spend their short break before the upcoming USBC Senior Masters competing with their sons at the Open Championships.

"It's great to have an event like this where I can bowl with my son, and John can bowl with his," said Chamberlain Sr., who owns four PBA Senior Tour titles. "Being able to bowl as well as we did makes it even better. I really love team bowling. Anytime you're a little down, there are four other guys there to pick you back up, and that's what team bowling is all about."

Chamberlain had the chance to teach his son about the basics of team bowling when Chamberlain Jr. started the night with three consecutive open frames. With the support of his teammates, he was able to bounce back with two solid games.

"We practiced and talked strategy before we bowled, and during the event, we watched each other's ball reactions and talked about what was going on," Chamberlain Sr. said. "Everyone pretty much stuck to the plan, which was to all play in the same area to open the lanes up. When you only get three games, it's important to create your own shot. If you crisscross each other, you can't bowl well. I think 3,150-3,200 is a pretty good team goal, so what we did tonight felt great."

Defending Regular Team champion, Lava Lanes of Medford, Ore., also was on-site Tuesday to get a look at the lanes in preparation of its attempt at a title defense Wednesday night.

Last year, Lava Lanes topped more than 16,000 teams and claimed the title with a 3,405 team total, the first 3,400 in the tournament's five trips to the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev.

Because of a couple of injuries, though, only three members of the team made the trip to Albuquerque.

The team will be led onto the lanes Wednesday by 2003 USBC Masters champion Bryon Smith and Jake Drier, who helped the team to the title in his tournament debut. The two will be joined by Wynn Malikowski, while Brian Tinsley (broken leg) and Guy Sutherlin (injured shoulder) await the results.
