Team USA sweeps All Events titles at PABCON Championship of the Champions
Puerto Rico wins gold in Mixed Doubles
The United States earned gold medals in men's all-events, women's all-events and national all-events Thursday at the 2008 Pan American Bowling Confederation Championship of the Champions but settled for a disappointing silver medal in mixed doubles. Leading by more than 120 pins heading into the final round of mixed doubles, the Team USA pairing of John Janawicz and Shannon O'Keefe struggled down the stretch and was passed by Puerto Rico.
Janawicz totaled 1,674 for eight games while O'Keefe had 1,669 as the pair took silver with 3,343. Puerto Rico's Jessica Santiago and Francisco Colon (pictured right) won the gold with 3,409 while Colombia's Laura Fonnegra and David Romero and Mexico's Daniel Falconi and Adriana Perez tied for bronze with 3,255. With Puerto Rico leading by 63 pins heading into the final game, Team USA was unable to make a run after leaving four pocket 7-10 splits.
"I feel like we bowled good enough to shoot more than 500 the last game, but that's just how it goes," said Janawicz, who left three 7-10 splits and had nine strikes for a 200 final game. "It's tough to take that it ended like that but at the same time Puerto Rico bowled great, so a lot of credit goes to them for catching us."
Although they were disappointed by their finish in mixed doubles after sweeping the Singles event, Janawicz and O'Keefe earned gold medals in their respective divisions in all-events. Janawicz won easily with a 24-game total of 5,212 while O'Keefe took first with 4,974.
Their combined 48-game total also gave them the gold medal in national all-events, securing a spot for Team USA in the 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei.
"We felt like we threw the best shots we could the last game of doubles, and if it were our medal to win, we would have gotten those breaks," O'Keefe said. "It's OK, though, because we did what we came here to do, which was get Team USA qualified for the World Games. Everything beyond that is a bonus."
Janawicz was never challenged in the race for the men's all-events title. He won by nearly 200 pins over silver medalist Colon. El Salvador's Francisco Sanchez took the bronze. O'Keefe beat silver medalist Fonnegra by 74 pins while Santiago won bronze.
In the national all-events, Team USA won handily and led the group of eight countries that qualified for the World Games. Puerto Rico won the silver and Colombia took the bronze. Also qualified for the World Games are Venezuela, Mexico, Guatemala, Dominican Republic and El Salvador.
The Championship of the Champions will conclude Friday with the top eight players in singles and top eight mixed doubles teams competing in the Masters event.
