Eric Lukins of Fort Myers, Fla., considers himself to be a goal-oriented person, but after team and doubles at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships this week, he thought his all-events goal for this year was unattainable.

The 32-year-old right-hander had 596 in doubles and 584 in team and knew he was a long way from the 1,900 all-events total he was hoping for, but he had no plans of giving up. Since shooting a 700 series in singles was a secondary goal when he arrived at the Albuquerque Convention Center, he had the motivation he needed.

After the lanes opened up a little, Lukins, who uses a thumbless release, posted games of 280, 230 and 268 for a 778 singles set and 1,958 all-events total. His singles effort moved him into fifth place in Regular Singles. Bryan Young of Everett, Wash., leads with 832.

"I felt pretty good yesterday, but didn't score well," said Lukins, who made his sixth USBC Open Championships appearance. "I knew I was in the right area and did the same thing today. I've always wanted to finish in the top 100, so this is unbelievable. I never thought I'd come out here and bowl this well on a tough shot like this."

In order to prepare for his trip to the Open Championships, Lukins has bowled on a tough shot once each week since his leagues ended at the beginning of May. He also recently bowled in the Florida State Tournament, and after arriving in Albuquerque, he used the Roto Grip Sport Bowling Challenge as a tune-up.

"We try to come later in the tournament because it gives us a chance to see some of the scores and get an idea about what's going on," Lukins said. "I get online about twice each week to see what's happening and how my friends have bowled, and that really motivates me."

While he did shoot 1,910 in his debut at the 2002 tournament in Billings, Mont., Lukins hasn't been able to reach the 1,900 mark since. Achieving the goals he set for himself this year has only motivated him more as he looks ahead to next year's tournament in Las Vegas.

"I'm going home tomorrow, and I'm really feeling good about this," said Lukins, a painter for Barefoot Charley's Painting. "Doing this makes me look forward to bowling again next year. I probably won't change my goals much, but if I finish up there in singles, it means I can succeed here, and I might aim a little higher."
