Maryland bowlers starts vacation with success at USBC Open Championships
Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, NM, United States (Feb. 16 - July 7, 2008)
Randy Dickinson of Baltimore rolled a 300 game at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships on Monday with a bowling ball that has been reliable over the years, but almost didn't make the trip to the Albuquerque Convention Center this year. The 44-year-old right-hander decided at the last minute to include the ball in his tournament arsenal, and the choice paid off with the 29th perfect game of the 2008 USBC Open Championships. Dickinson, who got the ball from a friend a few years ago and has had regular success on the lanes, rolled games of 217, 205 and 300 for a 722 singles effort.
"When I was planning my trip out here, I wasn't even going to ship that ball, but I'm glad I did," said Dickinson, an engineering technician for the Maryland Aviation Administration. "I got that ball from a buddy a few years ago. Our hands are the same size, so we can throw the same equipment. It's always in my bag and always reliable. This was definitely unexpected and a lot of fun."
Dickinson started his trip to Albuquerque with a confidence-boosting win at the Roto Grip Sport Bowling Challenge on Saturday using the same ball and rounded out his third Open Championships appearance with 588 in doubles and 564 in team for a 1,874 all-events total.
After putting the finishing touches on his perfect game, Dickinson admitted that he wasn't as nervous as he thought he'd be.
"I guess I was figuring that something would happen to keep me from shooting 300, so I wasn't too worried about it," Dickinson said. "My expectations each year are to cash in all four events and shoot 1,800, and to shoot 300 also is great."
For Dickinson, the annual trip to the Open Championships is as much about golf and spending time with friends and family as it is about bowling. In fact, his 300 came just hours before his tee time at a nearby golf course, and is all part of a two-week vacation.
"We bowl a lot of tournaments, but it's still mainly about having fun, which we've been doing together for years," Dickinson said. "This is a vacation for me, and I'm looking forward to playing some golf now. My sister from Colorado Springs came down, and now I'm headed to her house for the rest of my vacation. So far, it's been an exciting start."
