WIU Bowling Team signs first international player
Javier Diaz from Puerto Rico will join the Webber International University bowling team in August. Diaz is a current member of the Puerto Rican National Team, a member for the past 3 years.
In this capacity, he has competed in the American Zone Championships, the Central and Caribbean Championship (CONCECABOL) as well as the Caribbean Championship (COBOISCA). He will represent Puerto Rico in the Tournament of the Americas in July.
In international competition, representing Puerto Rico, he has earned five medals, including two gold.
"Javier was one of the first international players to contact me about the team," said Warrior head coach, Joe Slowinski. "His experience in high-level international play will be an immediate asset to building a competitive team," added Slowinski.
Diaz has five 300 games and two 800 series including the second highest all-time in Puerto Rico. His first 300 game was rolled as a fourteen year old, the youngest ever in his country.
"I am really excited about attending WIU. A small university like Webber is the one that I need and it has just what I want to study," said Diaz.
Diaz is a honor graduate of the American Military Academy (Guaynabo) and he is a member of the National Honor Society.
"It's going to be an honor bowling for Webber. I am really excited about starting training, meeting my teammates, and starting the quest for the National Title! There is no doubt in my mind that we have a great team with a lot of talent and determination to achieve that goal."
