PBA National Tour #8
Mike Wolfe wins his second PBA title
Clifton Park Bowl in Clifton Park, N.Y. (Dec. 14-18, 2005)
Mike Wolfe wins his second PBA title Mike Wolfe won his second career Denny's PBA Tour title, defeating Chris Collins in the title match of the 2005 Empire State Classic, 268-214, Sunday at Spare Time - Clifton Park. The 29-year-old and five-year Tour veteran began the title match with two strikes and took advantage of Collins' open second frame, when he failed to convert a 3-9-10 split.
"[Collins'] open early in the game gave me momentum and I was able to relax a bit," said Wolfe, who marked in all but one frame on the day. "There's still room for improvement and I need to take it as it goes. This is a good feeling going into the break."
Wolfe, who earned the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Tour season, struck in frames 4-10 and never let Collins, making his first career telecast, into the match. Wolfe defeated Mike Scroggins, 236-187, to advance to the title match. Scroggins, the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings leader, left two splits over the final four frames.
Collins defeated Jack Jurek, looking to win his first Tour title in over 10 years, in their semifinal match, 243-234. Collins capitalized on a Jurek open in the 7th by striking three times in the 9th and 10th frames.
Collins earned $20,000 for second while Scroggins and Jurek received $10,000 apiece for their respective third and fourth place finishes.
The Denny's PBA Tour takes a two week break before heading to Meford, Ore., for the 2005 Earl Anthony Medford Classic, Jan. 4-8 at Lava Lanes. The live ESPN televised finals take place Sunday, Jan. 8 at 10 a.m. PST, with the winner taking home the $40,000 top prize.

Jack Jurek targets to end ten-year drought
Jack Jurek proved Friday that good things come to those who wait. Jurek advanced to his first Denny's PBA Tour championship round in almost seven years as he defeated Ryan Shafer, 4-2, in the Round of 8 in the 2005 Empire State Classic at Spare Time - Clifton Park.
Jurek will be looking for his first title in 10 years, eight months and 23 days, which would be the third-longest stretch between titles in Tour history.
"It's been 20 years that I've been out here. Even though it hasn't been great, there's a love I have for being out here," said Jurek, who earned his exemption for 2005-06 by leading last season's PBA Central Region Point Rankings. "It was starting to be a big question as to whether I could get back to this level. It's been so long since I was on TV I think it was still in black and white."
Jurek knocked off two fellow New Yorkers on his way to the finals in Shafer and Brad Angelo in the Round of 32.
Jurek will face Chris Collins in the first semifinal. Collins will be making his first career television appearance as he came back from an 0-3 deficit to defeat Mike Machuga, 4-3. Machuga had won his first 11 games in match play until Collins beat him in four-straight games.
Mike Wolfe advanced to his second championship Round of the season by defeating Patrick Healey Jr., 4-1. He will face USBC Masters champion Mike Scroggins in the second semifinal. Scroggins, who defeated Tommy Delutz Jr., 4-2, takes over the top spot in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings with Friday's win.
The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final round live from Spare Time - Clifton Park Sunday, Dec. 18 at 1 p.m. EST.

Mike Scroggins leads Top 32 into match play
Mike Scroggins is in the midst of a dream season on the Denny's PBA Tour, and he's showing no signs of slowing down. Scroggins will be the top seed in the 2005 Empire State Classic match play Round of 32 after he led the Round of 64 with a 3,408 14-game pinfall, including a 252.29 average in his second seven-game block, Thursday at Spare Time - Clifton Park.
"I've been throwing [the ball] really well all eight weeks," said Scroggins, who shot 248 or better in five of seven games Thursday evening, including a 289 in his final game of the night. "You just need to ride the wave as long as you can."
The left-hander from Amarillo, Texas, already has a career-high $126,000 in season earnings, thanks in part to his 2005 United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Masters win earlier this season. He entered the week with a 228.76 average, tops on Tour.
Scroggins, who opened the second session with games of 212, 248, 279, 257 and 266, will face amateur Steve Wagoner in the best-of-seven games match play Round of 32. Wagoner qualified 32nd with 3,064.
Michael Haugen Jr. was second with 3,300 and will face Randy Weiss in the Round of 32. Looking for his second title of the season, first session leader Mike Machuga was third with 3,295, and will face Dino Castillo, who was 30th with 3,065.
Walter Ray Williams Jr. finished 9th with 3,232 and will be looking to add to his 40 career titles. A win this week would tie him with lefty Earl Anthony for the most titles in Tour history.
The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final rounds live on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 1 p.m. EST.

Mike Machuga gets off to a fast start
Mike Machuga fired a 243 in game seven to take the overall lead with a 1,691 seven-game pinfall after the first of two qualifying sessions Thursday in the Round of 64 in the 2005 Empire State Classic at Spare Time - Clifton Park. Machuga, who won his first Denny's PBA Tour career title earlier this season, averaged 241.57 over his seven games.
"I've been in the position of leading the squad many times and it's a horrible feeling to put it on cruise control and watch the whole field lap you," said Machuga, referring to the second seven-game session which takes place tonight. "There's a lot of pride and prestige in leading the tournament. The higher you qualify the lower seed you get to bowl so I want to lead this thing."
Machuga got off to a fast start on Thursday, shooting 257, 278 and 276 in the first three games to take the early lead. He held the lead with a 224 and 266 in games four and five, but a 147 in game six dropped him down to fourth. He rebounded with a 243 to take the lead.
Three of the top five bowlers are from New York state. Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., Brian Kretzer, Dayton, Ohio, and Michael Fagan, Greenlawn, N.Y., all looking for the first career titles, sit second, third and fourth, respectively.
Gary Shultis, Levittown, N.Y., who advanced to the Round of 64 through Wednesday's Denny's PBA Tour Qualifying Round, fired a 300 in game one and is currently fifth with 1,659. Fagan had the day's other 300 game, in game four.
All 64 bowlers will return for another seven games tonight at 6 p.m. EST, with the top 32 advancing to Friday's single elimination, best-of-seven games match play.
The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final round live from Spare Time - Clifton Park Sunday, Dec. 18 at 1 p.m. EST.

Jim Pratt advances to fourth standard events this season
Jim Pratt led the Denny's PBA Tour Qualifying Round Wednesday at Spare Time - Clifton Park with a 1,604 seven-game pinfall. The top seven non-exempt PBA members earned their way into this week's 2005 Empire State Classic, as three exempt bowlers - Chris Barnes, Danny Wiseman and Amleto Monacelli - took the week off. Usually, the top four members advance.
Pratt started his day with scores of 218, 256 and 247. After a 209 in game five, he fired a 244 in game six to take the lead for good. "I'm good on Wednesdays but haven't figured out how to bowl on Thursdays," said Pratt, who has advanced in four of six qualifying rounds, but has finished no better than 47th in Thursdays' standard Round of 64 all season.
Amateur Stephen Wagoner, Broadalbin, N.Y., doubled in the 10th frame of the final game to finish second overall with 1,571 and outpace Joe Mazuryk, Altamont, N.Y., for the top amateur spot in Thursday's Round of 64. Mazuryk just missed, despite tossing a 255 in his final game to finish third overall with 1,567, as only one amateur advances each week.
Troy Wollenbecker was fourth with 1,554 while Jim Tomek Jr. was fifth with 1,552. John Furey was sixth with 1,548 and left-hander Eric Forkel was 7th with 1,533. Gary Shultis was the sixth-highest PBA member, finishing 9th overall with 1,523. Jonathan Van Hees finished 10th with 1,508, beating out 12-time Tour winner Del Ballard Jr. for the final member spot in tomorrow's action.
The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final rounds live on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 1 p.m. EST.
