Tony Reyes earns exemption for 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour
"The Final Frame"
Tony Reyes earns exemption for 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour in Final Frame Tony Reyes earned an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season by winning "The Final Frame presented by the Denny's PBA Tour," a special event held Sunday at ABC West Lanes. Reyes defeated Tore Torgersen from Norway, seven-strikes-to-five, in a 12-frame match without spare attempts. He earns $10,000 for the win.
"I am absolutely relieved," said Reyes, who came into the event 53rd in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings. "It's been one heck of a first half of the season and I'm just going to try and bounce back and have a good second half. This is a dream right now."
The four finalists were matched up with one of four "coaches," Denny's PBA Tour exempt players Jason Couch, Danny Wiseman, Tommy Jones and Norm Duke. The first time a player failed to strike, they called upon their coach to re-take the shot.
Neither Reyes, coached by Couch, nor Torgersen, coached by Wiseman, struck with their first shot. Couch could not convert for Reyes but Wiseman struck to give Torgersen the early lead. Reyes came back with strikes in the second and fourth-6th frames, however, to take a 4-1 the lead.
Torgersen battled back and trailed just 6-5 after 10 frames, but Reyes struck in the 11th frame while Torgersen missed his 11th shot, giving Reyes the win.
Reyes advanced to the title match by winning the semifinal with six strikes, while Torgersen struck five times. Reyes did not strike until the fifth frame, but struck with his final five shots to advance to the title match. Joe Ciccone, coached by Duke, and Rick Steelsmith, coached by Jones, had four strikes each and were eliminated.
The event started with 50 bowlers taking one shot each, with any bowler not striking being eliminated from the competition. The elimination rounds continued until just four bowlers remained.
With seven bowlers remaining in the fourth round, Steelsmith, Torgersen, Reyes and Ciccone all struck, while Tom Daugherty, Nathan Bohr and Chris Collins failed to strike and were eliminated.
Couch takes home $3,000, while Torgersen and Wiseman earned $2,000 for their runner-up finish. Ciccone, Duke, Steelsmith and Jones earned $1,000 apiece. "The Final Frame presented by the Denny's PBA Tour" will air Sunday, December 25 on ESPN at 1 p.m. EST.
