David Beres wins Regional Players Championship David Beres picked a pretty good time to win his first career PBA title. Beres defeated Emilio Mora Jr., 203-190, in the title match of the 2005 PBA Wild Turkey Bourbon Regional Players Championship Tuesday afternoon at Stardust Bowl II, taking home the $10,000 top prize.

The major victory also gives Beres a spot in the 2006 PBA Dexter Tournament of Champions, one of four major events on the PBA Tour. "This is definitely the one to win," said Beres, Waukesha, Wis., who was winless in his first 68 career PBA Wild Turkey Bourbon Regional Tour events. "It's a big relief getting that first one out of the way."

Beres found himself 20 pins down after three frames, but he closed the gap with three strikes in frames 4-7. Mora, who started the match with three straight strikes, suffered two costly open frames after enduring a 2-4-6-7-10 split in the 7th, followed by a 1-3-7 washout.

Those open frames were exactly what Beres needed. Despite failing to strike after the 7th frame, he converted three straight spare attempts to clinch his first career PBA victory.

Beres, who runs a bowling center in Menomonee Falls, Wis., punched his ticket to the title match by defeating Jeff Fehr, Cincinnati, in the semifinals, 216-214. Beres needed to double and knock down nine in the 10th frame to win, but instead tossed three straight strikes for the victory.

Mora, Defiance, Ohio, defeated four-time PBA Tour title winner Dennis Horan Jr., 257-246, in their semifinal match. Horan, Temecula, Calif., struck in frames 4-7 but couldn't overcome Mora, who struck on seven consecutive shots from frames 4-10.

The 2005 PBA Tour Trials begins Wednesday, June 1 and offers competitors a shot at one of 10 exemptions for the 2005-06 PBA Tour season.
