2005 PBA Senior Tour #7
Ross Packard wins first career PBA Senior title
PBA Senior Northern California Classic
Ross Packard overcame an early blowout to win his first career PBA Senior Tour title, defeating Vince Mazzanti Jr., two-games-to-one, in the title match of the 2005 PBA Senior Northern California Classic Thursday evening at Harvest Park Bowl.Packard, who won the $8,000 top prize, dropped the opening game against Mazzanti, 240-191, but believed he was ready to make a run. "Towards the end of the first game, I felt that I had gotten to the right spot [on the lanes] with the right equipment," said Packard, who owns 27 career PBA Wild Turkey Bourbon Regional Tour titles. "I figured that I was close, and that I had a chance to win."
Packard, San Jose, Calif., won game two, 212-200, building up a large enough lead to withstand an open 10th frame. In the deciding game, Packard began with a strike and spare before striking on his next three shots. Strikes in the 8th and 9th frames, combined with Mazzanti failing to strike in the 10th, helped Packard to win, 237-192, and his earn his first PBA Senior Tour title in 12 tries.
Mazzanti, Levittown, N.Y., was looking to become the first bowler since 2000 to win back-to-back PBA Senior Tour events after he won last week's 2005 American Bowling Congress Senior Masters in Las Vegas.
Packard punched his ticket to the title match by defeating Pat Kruse, Castro Valley, Calif., in the best-of-three games semifinal match. Coming off a 187-181 loss in game two, Packard recovered to win the third game, 258-178. Mazzanti dispatched five-time title winner Ron Winger, Westlake Village, Calif., in the semifinals, 2-1.
The PBA Senior Tour heads to Klamath Falls, Ore., for the 2005 PBA Senior Epicenter Classic, June 26-30 at the Epicenter Bowling Complex.

Roger LeClair leads the field after Day 1
Roger LeClair endured a rough start to eventually take the lead in the 2005 PBA Senior Northern California Classic with a 1,845 eight-game pinfall Monday at Harvest Park Bowl. LeClair, looking for his first career PBA Senior Tour title, opened with a 236, but followed that up with scores of 157 and 160 in games two and three, respectively. A ball change helped him average 258.40 the rest of the way.
"It would mean the world," LeClair, Clackamas, Ore., said of the possibility of winning his first PBA Senior Tour title. "To be a Senior PBA titlist with the others who have won in the past - Earl Anthony, Dick Weber, [John] Handegard, [Gene] Stus ... just to have a banner up there, that would help make a bowling career."
LeClair entered the final game of the day 5th in his squad and 48 pins behind the leader, Dale Eagle. LeClair fired a 264 to finish his set while Eagle settled for a 210 in his final game. Eagle, looking to become just the fourth bowler to reach 10 career PBA Senior Tour titles, is second with 1,839.
