2005 PBA Senior Tour #11

Charlie Tapp wins first title in season-ending event

PBA Senior Jackson Open

Charlie_Tapp_5379.jpg Charlie Tapp certainly saved his best for last. Tapp won his first career PBA Senior Tour title in the season's final event, defeating Vince Mazzanti Jr., 2-1, in the championship match of the 2005 PBA Senior Jackson Open at Airport Lanes on Wednesday.

Tapp, who was winless in his first 26 PBA Senior Tour events, averaged 250 over the three games to take home the $8,000 top prize. "I had a really nice look and the longer it went, the worse it got on his side and the better it was for me," said Tapp, who lost to Mazzanti in the title match of the 2003 PBA Senior Lake County Open.

Tapp dropped the first game to Mazzanti, who was looking for his second title of the season, 234-227. Mazzanti was forced to mark in the 10th frame after Tapp struck on his last five shots. It was, however, a sign of things to come.

The 54-year-old Tapp recovered by striking on his final six shots of a 254-187 game two win before closing out the match with a 269-214 victory in game three. Tapp punched his ticket to the title match after he defeated Jim Brenner, 2-1, in their semifinal match. Tapp won the opening game, 245-236 before taking the final game, 235-228.

Mazzanti swept three-time PBA Senior Player of the Year and nine-time PBA Senior Tour title winner, Bob Glass, 2-0, in the semifinals. Mazzanti averaged 249.50 in the win and improved to 5-0 lifetime against Glass in match play.

Tapp, who had missed time this season after injuring rib cartilage early in the season, finished 4th in last week's 2005 PBA Senior Lake County Open presented by Storm. The 2005 PBA Senior Jackson Open concludes the 2005 PBA Senior Tour season.

Vince Mazzanti Jr. two wins away from the title

Vince Mazzanti Jr. needs to get by two more bowlers to defend his title in the 2005 PBA Senior Jackson Open after beating Don Sylvia, 3-1, in the Round of 8 Wednesday at Airport Lanes.

Mazzanti, who averaged 230.67 in the win over Sylvia, will face the 2004 PBA Senior Player of the Year Bob Glass in the semifinals. Glass swept the top qualifier and PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker, 3-0.

Mazzanti is 4-0 against Glass in match play including two wins over Glass in the 2005 ABC Senior Masters. Mazzanti sent Glass into the loser's backet that week before beating Glass by 70 pins in the three-game title match.

"He brings the best out of me," said Mazzanti of Glass. "I put up scores that aren't normal. I need everything I can to match him. I call him 'The Giant.' He's so big and the ball just explodes at the pins."

In other matches, Charlie Tapp ended Dale Eagle's hopes of a third victory this season, with a sweep of the 10-time title winner. Tapp shot 206 in the first two games before winning game three, 239-198.

Jim Brenner and Jeff Bellinger matched each other virtually pin for pin through the first two games of their match before Brenner pulled away for a 3-1 win. The two had tied game one, 215-215, before Brenner won the sudden-death roll-off, 37-36. Game two ended with a 236-236 tie, then Bellinger won the roll-off, 9-7.

The semifinals and finals begin tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET, and will feature best-of-three games match play, with the winner taking home the $8,000 top prize.

Defending champion Vince Mazzanti Jr. weathered the storm and kept his hopes of repeating alive after defeating Robert Flaws, 3-2, in the 2005 PBA Senior Jackson Open Round of 24 Tuesday evening at Airport Lanes. Mazzanti found himself down 2-0 after Flaws, appearing in his first career PBA Senior Tour event, won game two, 268-207.

I thought maybe [Flaw's hot hand] would stop if I could get pressure on him," said Mazzanti, who won the 2004 PBA Senior Jackson Open. "[Flaws] bowled great and performed tremendously." The 2005 Senior ABC Masters champion was able to pressure Flaws, winning game three, 290-225, before evening the match with a with a 247-207 win in game four.

Mazzanti will face the 2003 PBA Senior Player of the Year Bob Chamberlain in Wednesday's best-of-five-games match play Round of 16.

Baker, Buffalo, shot 245 or better in six of his eight games, including scores of 267, 245 and 289 to close out his block.

300 Games (Round 2): None.

Ron Winger takes early lead in Jackson

Ron Winger shrugged off a sub-par opening game to take the lead in the 2005 PBA Senior Jackson Open Sunday at Airport Lanes. Winger, who fired a 198 in his first game of the day, turned around and tossed the event's first 300 game in his second game. The five-time PBA Senior Tour title winner also averaged 232.00 over games five through seven and finished with a 1,865 eight-game pinfall.

"I always think positive. My thinking is you never know what's going to happen," said Winger, who last won the 2003 PBA Senior Clarksville Open. "I was getting strikes, and had two or three doubles [in the first game], but also had a couple opens. I sort of got it together."

Winger finished 15th in this event last season. His best finish this season was 3rd in the 2005 PBA Senior Northern California Classic. Tommy Nevitt is seconnd with 1,843 and 61-year-old George Lord is third with 1,822. Charlie Tapp is fourth with 1,815 after reaching the semifinals in last week's 2005 PBA Senior Lake County Open presented by Storm.

Rounding out the top 5 is Robert Flaws with 1,814, with PBA Hall of Famer and PBA Senior Tour rookie Tom Baker close behind in sixth place with 1,809. Another PBA Hall of Famer, 65-year-old Dave Soutar, is tied for 8th with the 2004 PBA Senior Player of the Year Bob Glass with 1,801.

The entire field will return Monday for an additional eight games of qualifying, after which the top one-third of the 148-bowler field will bowl a final eight-game qualifying set Tuesday. The top 32 will advance to match play. The semifinals and finals on Wednesday will feature best-of-three match play, with the winner taking home the $8,000 top prize.
