Shannon Pluhowsky and John Janawicz selected as BWAA Amateur Bowlers of the Year

Traveling different paths, Shannon Pluhowsky and John Janawicz were selected as the 2004 Storm Products Amateur Bowlers of the Year by the Bowling Writers Association of America.

"While Shannon's achievements were spread through the international bowling scene the entire year," explained Chairperson Bill Zuben. "John's record-breaking performance at last year's ABC National Championship Tournament earned him the recognition."

Pluhowsky (pictured), a twenty-two year old lefthander from Phoenix, captured her third straight U.S. Amateur Championship qualifying her for TEAM USA. She won her second AMF World Cup in Singapore, repeating her 2002 victory. Her University of Nebraska team won the first NCAA Women's Championship, as she earned Most Valuable Player honors.

"I learned from my disappointments last season and used that experience to motivate me this year," said Pluhowsky of her 2003 World Cup loss. The United States Olympic Committee selected her as Bowling's Sportswoman of the Year. She also was chosen as the BWAA Woman Bowler of the Year.

Janawicz (pictured), a thirty-one year old right-hander from Winter Haven, Florida, is a technician at the Kegel Training Center in Lake Wales. At the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, he strung together games of 300-279-279 for an all-time ABC Tournament record of 858. He struck in 33 of 36 shots, leaving only three tenpins along the way. This was the only 800 series produced throughout the event.

"I knew in the back of my mind that I had a legitimate shot to do something good," said Janawicz. "To win the Eagle, that's more important than the money." Adding scores of 687 in team and 679 in doubles, he won All Events as well with a 2224 total. This is the first time in thirty-three years that singles and all events titles went to the same person.
