PBA National Tour #11
Ritchie Allen beats Del Ballard to win second career title in Phoenix
AMF Christown Lanes in Phoenix, AZ (Jan. 18-22, 2006)
It was a battle of youth against experience in the title match of the 2006 Motel 6 Phoenix Classic, and the fight wasn't decided until the final frame. Ritchie Allen, 27-years-old, defeated Del Ballard Jr., a PBA member since 1982, 232-207, to win his second career Denny's PBA Tour title Sunday at AMF Christown Lanes. Needing to mark in the 10th frame, Allen struck to cap an impressive comeback which found him behind through seven frames. Allen, who had struck just once through the first six frames, credited the victory to a key ball change he made in the sixth frame.
"I was going to make a [ball] change a few weeks ago in Medford," said Allen, referring to his third place finish in the 2006 Earl Anthony Medford Classic. "I told myself not to doubt myself."
Allen, Columbia, S.C., fell behind early, striking just once and converting five spares over the first six frames while Ballard, appearing in his first title match since his 1993 U.S. Open win, struck four times over the same span. That's when Allen made the ball change, which swung the momentum of the match in his favor.
Allen advanced to his second career title match by defeating Brian Kretzer in the first semifinal, 215-192. Ballard defeated Mike DeVaney in the semifinals, 226-201. Ballard earned $20,000 for second while DeVaney and Kretzer earned $10,000 apiece for their respective third and fourth place finishes.
The Denny's PBA Tour heads to Trussville, Ala., for the 2006 Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Classic, Jan. 25-29 at Lightning Strikes. The live ESPN televised finals take place Sunday, Jan. 29 at 12:30 p.m. EST, with the winner taking home the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 season.

Del Ballard Jr. advances to the Championship Round in Phoenix
It's been a long, emotional road, but Del Ballard Jr. is finally back. The 12-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist advanced to his first championship round since 1997, defeating Dino Castillo, four-games-to-three, Friday in the Round of 8 in the 2006 Motel 6 Phoenix Classic at AMF Christown Lanes. Ballard has endured two difficult years, from missing out on a Tour exemption the last two seasons, to losing his father last August. He will be looking for his first title since the 1993 U.S. Open, which would give him a PBA record for the longest span between Tour titles.
"That was the hardest game I have ever bowled," said Ballard, of his seventh game against Castillo. "I've won 12 titles and a bunch of Majors but it doesn't matter. It's right then and there that matters. Right now I'm just thinking about how I can walk out there without crying again."
The 24-year Tour veteran had to knock off the rookie Castillo (pictured), Carrollton, Texas, who was looking for his first career television appearance. The 42-year-old Ballard, North Richland Hills, Texas, has coached the 35-year-old Castillo in recent years. Ballard will face Mike DeVaney, who defeated Michael Fagan, 4-1, to advance to his first championship round this season. The other semifinal features Ritchie Allen taking on Brian Kretzer.
Kretzer defeated Robert Smith, 4-3, in an exciting seven-game match. Kretzer needed a mark in the 10th frame of game seven to win, but left a 4-7-10 split. Kretzer picked up the difficult spare, then struck with his final shot to clinch a 205-202 win and his first television appearance since 2004. Allen, making his second television appearance in the last three weeks, defeated Ryan Shafer, 4-1.
The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final round live from AMF Christown Lanes Sunday, Jan. 22 at 11 a.m. MST.

Mike Machuga leads top 32 into single-elimination match play finals
Looking for his second Denny's PBA Tour title of the season, Mike Machuga led the Round of 64 in the 2006 Motel 6 Phoenix Classic with a 3,196 14-game pinfall Thursday at AMF Christown Lanes. The 29-year-old from Erie, Pa., was fourth after the first seven-game qualifying set of the day, averaging 229.43. He made his move in the second session, tallying scores of 266, 239 and 265 in games four through six.
"I don't understand how I led [qualifying]. I didn't feel that I bowled well physically, but I guess it's all about matching up," said Machuga, who won his first career title in the 2005 Greater Omaha Classic. "It's the simple things. I read the lane the right way and I used the right ball. I made my spares and here I am."
Machuga, who entered the week with a career-best 223.60 season average, will face Nathan Bohr in the best-of-seven-games match play Round of 32 which begins Friday at 9 a.m. MST. Bohr fired a 255 in his final game and finished 32nd with 2,978. He beat out Tommy Delutz Jr. for the final match play spot by three pins.
Ryan Shafer, a four-time title winner from Elmira, N.Y., was second with 3,183 and will face 2005 PBA Player of the Year Patrick Allen, who was 31st with 2,979. PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber, who lead the Round of 64 after the first 7-game block, finished third with 3,167 and will take on Wes Malott in the Round of 32.
Fellow Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. shot 201 in his final game, but missed the cut, finishing 34th with 2,973. Among those failing to make the cut were Parker Bohn III (35th), Brian Voss (38th), PBA Point Ranking leader Norm Duke (pictured, 39th), Mika Koivuniemi (53rd) and PBA Earnings and Average leader Mike Scroggins (61st). The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final rounds live on Sunday, Jan. 22 at 11 a.m. MST.

Pete Weber leads Round of 64 at halftime
Coming off a disappointing week in which he failed to win the tournament named in his father's honor, PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber is determined to bounce back. Weber fired a 1,647 seven-game pinfall Thursday to take the lead after the first block of qualifying in the Round of 64 in the 2006 Motel 6 Phoenix Classic at AMF Christown Lanes. Weber, who owns 32 Denny's PBA Tour titles including one earlier this season, finished 35th last week in the 2006 Dick Weber Open. The event was named in honor of his father, a PBA Hall of Famer who passed away last February.
"I was very motivated to win last week, but it's kind of tough when you shoot 150 the last game," said Weber (St. Ann, Mo.). "It's something you get over and you move on to the next week and try to do the best you can."
Weber has rebounded from a difficult 2004-05 campaign in which he lost his father, injured his shoulder and failed to reach a championship round for the first time since 1995. He won the 2005 BowlersParadise.com Classic in December, his first title in nearly two years.
Ben Laughlin, from nearby Maricopa, Ariz., is second with 1,632. Ryan Shafer is third with 1,607, with Michael Machuga fourth, 1,606 and Bryon Smith fifth, 1,595. Jason Couch, who won last week's 2006 Dick Weber Open for his second title this season, is tied for 19th with 1,533.
All 64 bowlers will return for another seven games tonight at 6 p.m. MST, with the top 32 advancing to Friday's single elimination, best-of-seven games match play. The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final round live from AMF Christown Lanes Sunday, Jan. 22 at 11 a.m. MST.

Arizona Diamondbacks Gonzalez, Ortiz and Candiotti will toss ceremonial first balls
Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star outfielder Luis Gonzalez, pitcher Russ Ortiz and broadcaster Tom Candiotti will roll out the ceremonial first balls prior to this week's nationally-televised ESPN finals.
The three will roll out the ceremonial first balls prior to the start of the final round of the 2006 Motel 6 Phoenix Classic, a Denny's PBA Tour event, at AMF Christown Lanes, which begins at 11 a.m. MST on Sunday, Jan. 22.
Gonzalez, a five-time All-Star, has 316 home runs and 1,251 RBI over 17 Major League seasons, the last seven with the Diamondbacks.

PBA Senior star Dale Eagle leads qualifying in Phoenix
Dale Eagle fired a 258 in his seventh and final game to lead the Denny's PBA Tour Qualifying Round for the 2006 Motel 6 Phoenix Classic with a 1,591 seven-game pinfall Wednesday at AMF Christown Lanes. The 59-year-old entered the final game fourth overall, 56-pins behind the leader Bryon Smith. "To tell you truth I don't like [the Shark oil pattern], but I kind of hang in there for some reason," said Eagle, who has advanced to two standard events featuring the Shark pattern this season. "I'm starting to figure some things out. My game's sound, but I need a little more carry."
Owner of three Denny's PBA Tour titles and 10 PBA Senior Tour titles, Eagle is moving on to his third standard Tour event of the season. Smith shot 187 in his final game to take second with 1,576 and Jeff Carter finished third with 1,547.
Robbie Patterson III of Tempe, Ariz. shot 279 in his final game to finish fourth with 1,542 and advance as the top amateur. Del Ballard Jr., a PBA member since 1982 and a 12-time Tour title winner, was fifth with 1,539.
David Leverage captured the fifth and final PBA member spot into the Round of 64 in style, shooting 300 in his final game to finish sixth overall with 1,534. He moved ahead of Sean Rash, who shot 228 in his last game.
With Tony Reyes skipping this week's event with a sore back, the top-five PBA members and top amateur advanced into the Round of 64. The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final rounds live on Sunday, Jan. 22 at 11 a.m. MST.
