PBA National Tour #14
Sean Rash lives his dream, wins first career PBA title in West Virginia
Emerson Lanes in Parkersburg, WV (Feb. 8-12, 2006)
What a day for Sean Rash! The 23-year-old former Team USA member became the first winner of a Denny's PBA title who came from the Pre-Tournament Qualifier. Rash defeated Mike DeVaney in the championship match of the PBA West Virginia Championship, 194-169, to win his first PBA title in his first event TV appearance, the $40,000 top prize, an exemption for next year's PBA Tour and a berth into the Dexter PBA Tournament of Champions.
Both players struggled in the championship. Rash made the 2-4-10 split in the first frame, the 2-10 split twice in the fourth and eighth frame and the 1-2-4-6-10 washout in the sixth and that made the difference. DeVaney opened twice in the first five frames and a double in the 8th and 9th frame was not enough to win. When he failed to strike on his first ball in the 10th, Sean Rash's dream came true.
Rash defeated USBC Masters champion Mike Scroggins, 246-194, in the opening semifinal match of the PBA West Virginia Championship at Emerson Lanes in Parkersburg, WV, while Mike DeVaney used a couple of lucky breaks to beat Patrick Healey Jr., 226-194, in the other semifinal.

Rash beats Williams to advance to the Show in West Virginia Championship
One bowler was looking to make his first career telecast while another was looking to tie the most elusive record in Denny's PBA Tour history. In the end, rookie Sean Rash defeated 40-time Tour title winner Walter Ray Williams Jr., four-games-to-three, in the 2006 West Virginia Championship Round of 8 Friday at Emerson Lanes. Rash, appearing in his second standard event of the season, beat Williams 212-206 in the deciding game, overcoming an open in the 7th. The 23-year-old rebounded with strikes in the 8th and 9th while Williams failed to strike after the 7th, converting three straight single-pin spares.
"I have nothing to lose by bowling qualifiers every week and bowling some Majors," said Rash, a current non-exempt PBA member. "I've gotten support from guys on Tour already. Chris Barnes is definitely a mentor for me."
Down 2-0, Rash won three straight games from the PBA Hall of Famer, including a 236-228 game five win in which he needed to convert the 2-10 split in the 10th frame.
Williams, looking to tie Earl Anthony's record of 41 career Tour titles, opened the match with a 279-258 game-one win, then increased his lead with a 248-219 game-two victory. Rash will face lefty Mike Scroggins, who advanced to his fifth telecast of the season after sweeping Robert Smith, 4-0.
Mike DeVaney (left) came back from an 0-2 deficit and defeated Mike Edwards, 4-2. DeVaney will face Patrick Healey Jr. (right) in the semifinals after Healey dispatched of PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber, 4-2. The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season Sunday, Feb. 12. The live ESPN finals begin at 12:30 p.m. EST.

Rash gets over the hump, sweeps through his first career PBA match play rounds
Sean Rash is one of the brightest young bowlers in the PBA, and he's finally showing why. After struggling through some early set-backs in this season's Denny's PBA Tour Qualifying Rounds (TQR), Rash is treating this week's 2006 West Virginia Championship as his personal coming out party.
A week after advancing to his first standard Round of 64 in the 2006 Bayer Atlanta Classic, Rash will now face PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. in the Round of 8 for a berth in Sunday's championship round. Making his first career standard match play appearance, Rash swept through each of his first two career matches, defeating Tim Criss, 4-0, in the Round of 32 and Michael Fagan, 4-0, in the Round of 16.
The 23-year-old Rash was a Team USA member in 2002, '04 and '05 and was a Junior Team USA member in 1998, 2002 and '03. The Wichita, Kan., native bowled at the collegiate level at Wichita State University where he was a two-time All-American, won the 2003 IBC National Championship and was the runner-up for 2003 IBC Bowler of the Year.
Rash had to endure some frustrating weeks in the TQRs before finally getting over the hump, finishing one spot out of the cut on three occasions. After finishing in the top 20 in each of the first three TQRs, Rash endured his first close call in the 2005 Chicago Classic, when he finished 7th, missing out by one spot after shooting a 169 in the seventh and final game.
After finishing 11th in the 2005 BowlersParadise.com Classic TQR, Rash again struggled in game seven, firing a 158 in the final game of the 2005 Keystone State Championship TQR to force a one-game roll-off with Chris Hayden for the final spot, which he lost, 190-171.
Rash's biggest heartbreak came in the 2006 Motel 6 Phoenix Classic TQR, where he finished 7th again, missing for the third time by one spot. This time, however, it wasn't Rash's game seven-performance to blame. Needing a big game to go around Rash, David Leverage shot 300 in the seventh game to outlast Rash - who shot 228 - by five pins.
While it looked like the youngster might have been burned out by the close calls, finishing 37th in the 2006 Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Classic TQR, Rash bounced back by qualifying for the first time last week in Norcross.
Now, he's just one match away from an appearance in Sunday's championship round.

All 16 higher seeds won their Round of 32 matches on Friday, the first time that has happened since the PBA went to head-to-head match play starting with the 2002-03 season.
Wes Malott enters Match Play as the No. 1 seed
Wes Malott, already enjoying a career year on the Denny's PBA Tour, will enter match play as the top seed as he led the 2006 West Virginia Championship Round of 64 with a 3,197 14-game pinfall Thursday at Emerson Lanes. Malott, who won his first career title in the 2005 Mile High Classic earlier this season, was 7th after the first seven-game session but averaged 231.57 in his second seven-game block to lead qualifying.
"Coming into this week I haven't been feeling well. I haven't felt well getting the ball out of my hand," said Malott, who has led qualifying in three standard events this season. "I made a point to practice more Wednesday night for two and a half hours."
The 29-year-old from Austin, Texas, will face Jason Couch (Clermont, Fla.) in the best-of-seven-games match play Round of 32. Couch needed to work overtime to advance to Friday's action.
The 13-time titlist defeated Joe Ciccone (Buffalo, N.Y.) in a one-game roll-off, 214-201, after the two tied for 32nd with 2,932. Couch would have avoided the extra game if not for a seven count on his final shot in regulation after Ciccone shot 268 in his final game.
PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr., still looking for his first televised finals appearance of the season, finished fifth with 3,112. The 40-time title winner from Ocala, Fla., will face Mika Koivuniemi (Hartland, Mich.) in the Round of 32.
Pete Weber (St. Ann, Mo.), looking for his 33rd career Tour title, finished 11th with 3,050 and will take on 22-time titlist Norm Duke (Clermont, Fla.) in the opening match play round. Duke finished qualifying 22nd with 2,988.
The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season Sunday, Feb. 12. The live ESPN finals begin at 12:30 p.m. EST.

Mike Edwards takes the lead in Parkersburg after first session
With the 2005-06 Denny's PBA Tour season heading into the home stretch, Mike Edwards needs a big week. Edwards put himself in position to make a big move in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings, firing a 1,611 seven-game pinfall Thursday to lead the first session of the Round of 64 in the 2006 West Virginia Championship at Emerson Lanes. The 22-season Tour veteran came into the week 49th in the 2005-06 World Point Rankings, with the cut line for an exemption for 2006-07 currently at 38th. Edwards, who started the season with two top-15 finishes in the first three weeks, has struggled with a right wrist injury and has failed to make a Round of 32 in the last eight events.
"My wrist felt good today for a change and everything fell into place," said Edwards. "(My wrist) hasn't felt good in eight weeks. I don't know what's going to happen, but that's why I haven't made match play in eight weeks. I know I'm not that bad."
Eric Forkel, who advanced to the Round of 64 through Wednesday's Denny's PBA Tour Qualifying Round, is second with 1,606. The Las Vegas native leads the race for an exemption among non-exempt PBA members as he is 57th in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings. Mike Scroggins, enjoying his best season on Tour, is third with 1,605. Scroggins has already surpassed his career-high in season earnings with $163,620. Patrick Healey Jr. is fourth with 1,597, while Tour-rookie Bill O'Neill and Brian Kretzer are tied for fifth with 1,583.
All 64 bowlers will return for another seven games tonight at 6 p.m. EST, with the top 32 advancing to Friday's single elimination, best-of-seven games match play.
The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. The live ESPN televised finals will take place at 12:30 p.m. EST.

Marc Massie wins Qualifying Round in West Virginia
Marc Massie edged out 19-year-old Matt Freiberg for the top spot in the Denny's PBA Tour Qualifying Round for the 2006 West Virginia Championship with a 1,553 seven-game pinfall Wednesday at Emerson Lanes. Massie, who owns three PBA Regional Tour titles, is one of seven non-exempt PBA members to advance to Thursday's Round of 64 as three exempt bowlers - Amleto Monacelli, Tony Reyes and Mike Machuga - skipped this week's event.
The 36-year-old from Ft. Wright, Ky., averaged 226.00 over his first six games before shooting 197 in the final game. That was good enough to hop over Sean Rash, who held the lead heading into the final game but shot 171 to finish fourth with 1,545.
"I had a good sense of feel for how the lanes were going to be," said Massie. "Tomorrow is going to be a much longer day and the competition is a little tougher. [The exempt bowlers] are unbelievable."
Freiberg, who became a PBA member earlier this season, fired a 222 in his final game to finish second with 1,550. Lefty Eric Forkel, who entered the week as the top non-exempt PBA member on the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings, finished third with 1,549. The top non-exempt member on the points list at season's end earns an exemption for the 2006-07 season. Jerry Rich was fifth with 1,532 while Chris Wimpey and Ronnie Russell tied for sixth with 1,531. Greg Thompson Jr. was the top amateur with 1,518 and will make his first career appearance in a standard Tour event.
The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season Sunday, Feb. 12. The live ESPN finals begin at 12:30 p.m. EST.
