PBA National Tour #15
Tommy Jones wins first career Major title in 63rd U.S. Open
Brunswick Zone Carolier North Brunswick, N.J. (Feb. 12-19, 2006)
Tommy Jones leaped to the front of the line in the race for the 2006 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Player of the Year award after winning his first career Major event, the 63rd U.S. Open Sunday at Brunswick Zone Carolier. Jones, who leads the Tour with four victories this season, defeated top-seeded Ryan Shafer in the title match, 237-223, clinching the $100,000 top prize and securing a spot on the Denny's PBA Tour through the 2008-09 season.
"You go out and do your best at every tournament. You want to have the chance to win. That's what you bowl for," said Jones, the No. 2 seed who converted a 4-pin in the 10th frame to capture his eighth Tour win over the last two seasons.
Shafer, who finished second in a Major for the third time in his career, applied pressure late by striking in frames 7-9, but it wasn't enough.
Jones dispatched of Michael Fagan, the No. 4 seed searching for his first career title, in the semifinal, 231-226. Jones struck in frames 6-9 to help seal the win after opening on a 1-2-4-10 split in the fifth.
In the first stepladder match, Fagan defeated Robert Smith, looking for his second career U.S. Open title, 216-214. Fagan converted the 6-7-10 split to start the 10th then followed with an eight count. Smith, a six-time Tour title winner, needed to strike to start his 10th, but instead left the 3-6-10.
Shafer earned $50,000 for his second place finish while Fagan earned $25,000 for third. Smith took home $15,000 for fourth.
The Denny's PBA Tour heads to Cheektowaga, N.Y., for the 2006 GEICO Classic, Feb. 22-26 at AMF Thruway Lanes. The live ESPN finals take place Sunday, Feb. 26 at 12:30 p.m. EST, with the winner taking home the $40,000 top prize and a exemption for the 2006-07 Tour season.

Ryan Shafer one win away from his first career PBA Major title
Ryan Shafer defeated Tommy Jones, 213-170, in the 24th and final game of match play Saturday night to earn the top seed for Sunday's finals in the 63rd U.S. Open at Brunswick Zone Carolier. Shafer, who owns four career Denny's PBA Tour titles, will be looking for his first career Major title. He has two career runner-up finishes in Major events. "I wasn't going to let that happen again," said Shafer, whose last title came 48 events ago in the 2003 Empire State Open. "I'm very happy with myself. I've had a lot of near misses in Majors so this means a lot to me."
Tommy Jones went into the position round leading Shafer by 58 pins, but the win gave Shafer 30 bonus pins, and an automatic berth in Sunday's stepladder finals title match. Jones, who has won seven Tour titles in the last two seasons, will be looking for his first career Major. He is making his first career appearance in a Major championship round.
Michael Fagan (left) will be looking for his first career title. He earned the No. 3 seed for Sunday by defeating Mike DeVaney in the final match, 216-167. Tommy Jones continues to lead in 63rd U.S. Open
Tommy Jones continued his march toward his first career appearance in a Denny's PBA Tour Major championship round, as he padded his lead Friday in the 63rd U.S. Open at Brunswick Zone Carolier. Jones led the field after the first 18 games of qualifying, then averaged 221.56 in Friday's final nine games of qualifying to keep the lead heading into tonight's round robin match play. "It's irrelevant," Jones said of leading.
"We still have 24 games of match play left plus bonus pins so anyone still bowling can get there. But it's good to have a cushion." Jones has a Tour-high three titles this season after leading with four last season, yet does not own a Major title. He finished with a 5,949 27-game pinfall.
Sean Rash is second with 5,908. The 23-year-old won last week's 2006 West Virginia Championship to become the first non-exempt bowler to win a Tour title. His opponent in the title match, Mike DeVaney, who shot one of the day's two 300-games, is third with 5,875.
PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. (left), who is looking to win his 41st career title and tie Earl Anthony for most career Tour titles, is tied for 9th with 5,743. Williams is looking to make his fifth straight U.S. Open championship round. Defending champion Chris Barnes fired a 215 in his final game Friday to jump from 26th to 21st. Michael Fagan earned the 24th and final spot in match play with 5,588.
The remaining 24 bowlers from the original 461-bowler field will bowl eight games of round robin match play tonight at 5 p.m. EST. Total pinfall carries over from all 27 games of qualifying. Bowlers will earn 30 bonus pins for each win in match play, and 15 pins for each tie.
The top four will bowl for the $100,000 top prize and a three-season exemption through the 2008-09 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday, Feb. 19, with the live ESPN telecast airing at 12:30 p.m. EST.

Tommy Jones leads top-quarter of U.S. Open field into Round Four
Tommy Jones owns seven career Denny's PBA Tour titles, but he's still looking for his first Major victory. He's one step closer to winning his first Major, as he led qualifying in the 63rd U.S. Open with a 3,955 18-game pinfall after averaging 217.33 in his final six-game set Thursday at Brunswick Zone Carolier. Jones, 27-years-old from Simpsonville, S.C., has won a Tour-best three titles this season and could solidify his position in the 2006 PBA Player of the Year race with a victory this week.
"There's no pressure," Jones said about the possibility of winning a Major. "You definitely want to win, but there's no pressure. This is the one you want to win if you're going to win a Major though. The format is the longest and it's the toughest conditions."
Two-time title winner Jason Hurd (left) was second with 3,949 while non-exempt PBA member Ritchie Wolfe (right) was third with 3,935. Norm Duke looking for his 23rd career title was fourth with 3,933 and Mike Machuga was fifth with 3,926.
PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. (left) was 8th with 3,823 and is looking to make his fifth straight U.S. Open final round. Defending champion Chris Barnes was 30th with 3,717. Two-time European ranking champion Paul Moor (right) from England made the cut in 39th place with 3,677.
Among the match play finalists are three former PWBA members. Michelle Feldman finished in 94th place with 3,581, while Cathy Dorin-Lizzi (left) was tied for 108th with 3,552, and her sister Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (right) 111th with 3,549. Their husbands, Jeff Lizzi (3,764, tied for 17th) and Del Ballard Jr. (105th, 3,557) also advanced.
Rick Steelsmith (left) and Lonnie Waliczek (right), Wichita, Kan., natives who are rooming together this week, tied for 115th with 3,536. The two tied a one-game roll-off, 203-203, and Waliczek won a sudden-death roll-off, 20-19, to advance to the next round. The top-quarter of the field (115 bowlers) will bowl nine additional qualifying games Friday, after which the top 24 will advance to round robin match play. The final four will bowl for the $100,000 top prize and a three-year exemption through the 2008-09 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday, Feb. 19, with the live ESPN telecast airing at 12:30 p.m. EST.

Jason Hurd overtakes the lead in 63rd U.S. Open
Jason Hurd overtakes the lead in 63rd U.S. Open Jason Hurd finished with a 2,660 12-game pinfall Wednesday to leap 16 spots and to lead the 461-bowler field after two days of qualifying in the 63rd U.S. Open at Brunswick Zone Carolier, the second of four Majors on the Denny's PBA Tour. Hurd is in need of a good showing this week. The Titusville, Fla., native enjoyed a career-season in 2004-05, winning his first career singles title and finishing 12th in the 2004-05 PBA World Point Rankings.
This season, however, Hurd is just 44th in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings with six events remaining to earn points toward an exemption for the 2006-07 Tour season. The cut-line for an exemption is currently 37th.
"It's getting down to crunch time," said Hurd, who finished 17th in last season's U.S. Open. "There are still a lot of games. Every pin counts in this tournament. I need to come in tomorrow like it's the first block and try to get every pin I can get."
Steve Rogers is second with 2,659, while Norm Duke, owner of 22 career Tour titles, is third with 2,652. Tommy Jones, who already has three titles to his credit this season, is fourth with 2,651, while Mike Machuga rounds out the top five with 2,650.
PBA's latest shooting star, Sean Rash (right), who won last week's 2006 West Virginia Championship, moved into sixth with 2,633. First round leader Richard Wolfe slipped to eighth place with 2,616.The entire 461-bowler field will bowl a final six-game qualifying session Thursday, after which the top-quarter of the field (115 players) will return Friday morning for nine more games of qualifying. The top 24 after 27 total games will advance to round robin match play, after which the top four will move on to Sunday's four-bowler stepladder finals.
The final four will bowl for the $100,000 top prize and a three-season exemption through the 2008-09 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday, Feb. 19, with the live ESPN telecast airing at 12:30 p.m. EST.

Ritchie Wolfe gets off to a good start in 63rd U.S. Open
Ritchie Wolfe, looking for his first career Denny's PBA Tour title, leads the 460-bowler field with a 1,411 six-game pinfall after the first Round of the 63rd U.S. Open Tuesday at Brunswick Zone Carolier.Wolfe, who shot games of 253 and 280 to start his day, is no stranger to strong performances in the Tour's Major events. The 38-year-old from Vienna, Va., finished tied for 12th in the 2004 World Championship and 23rd in the 62nd U.S. Open.
Wolfe was exempt for the 2004-05 Tour season, but finished 43rd in the 2004-05 PBA World Point Rankings and missed an exemption for this season by four places. Brian Valenta is second with 1,390. Valenta, who uses a two-handed delivery, finished 20th in last season's 62nd U.S. Open.
"This format and this pattern really fit my game well," Valenta said. "I just had a good line today. I threw the ball well and just stuck around and let it come to me." Mike Machuga is third with 1,380 and is looking to win his second title of the season. Steve Rogers is fourth with 1,362 while Team USA member David Haynes is fifth with 1,359.
Last week's champion Sean Rash, Wichita, Kan., sits in 19th place with 1,303. Defending champion Chris Barnes is tied for 38th with 1,264. PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber looking to win his fourth U.S. Open, is tied for 40th with 1,263.
Former PWBA star Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y., it he top woman in the field in 18th place with 1,307 pins. European ranking champion Paul Moor from England and USBC Masters champion Mike Scroggins are tied for 134th place with 1,181.The entire 461-bowler field will bowl two more six-game qualifying sessions Wednesday and Thursday, after which the top-quarter of the field (115 players) will return Friday morning for nine more games of qualifying.
The top 24 after 27 total games will advance to round robin match play, after which the top four will move on to Sunday’s four-bowler stepladder finals. The final four will bowl for the $100,000 top prize and a three-season exemption through the 2008-09 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday, Feb. 19, with the live ESPN telecast airing at 12:30 p.m. EST.
