101st ABC Championships Tournament

The eagles are landed; champions crowned as 101st ABC Tournament ends

National Bowling Stadium in Reno, NV, USA - Feb. 14 through June 28, 2004

A Florida bowler's record-setting performance highlighted 136 days of competition as the 101st American Bowling Congress Championships Tournament came to a close at the National Bowling Stadium on June 28.

On April 8, John Janawicz of Winter Haven, Fla., rewrote the record books by shooting the highest individual series in the history of the ABC Tournament. Janawicz rolled games of 300, 279 and 279 for an 858 series to win the Regular Singles title.

Janawicz also won the Regular All-Events championship with 2,224. He added 687 in doubles and 679 in team to his singles set.

"I still don't really know what to say, even now it really hasn't sunk in believe it or not," said Janawicz, who became the first bowler in more than 30 years to win both the singles and all-events title in the same year. "To shoot that high of a score in the world's largest tournament is more of a dream than a reality. It's still pretty shocking."

Competing in the Tournament's opening weeks, Joseph Crocco Jr. and Mike Vasey of Racine, Wis., claimed the Regular Doubles title with 1,477. Vasey had a 747 series and Crocco added 730 as the pair shot the third highest doubles total in ABC Tournament history at the National Bowling Stadium.

"Honestly, I didn't know if it was going to hold up," said Crocco, who bowled just 14 days into the Tournament on Feb. 28. "I'm fantastically relieved and my partner Mike is on cloud nine."

Top of the Line Pool Service of Clearwater, Fla., overcame some anxious moments to win the Team All-Events championship with 9,730. Competing after the rest of his teammates, team captain James Campbell totaled just enough in doubles and singles to push the team to the title. The team averaged over 216 for 45 games.

Don Yoshihara led the team with an all-events score of 2,134. He was followed by Jon Kunde (1,992), Andres Gomez (1,932), Craig Auerbach (1,893) and Campbell (1,779).

"Having to have five guys compete at that level and bowl better than more than 16,000 teams is amazing," Campbell said. "To know we wound up being the number one team is pretty awesome. It's definitely a very tough title to win."

The Regular Team title went to S&B Pro Shop #1 of Clinton Township, Mich., which totaled 3,268. Joe Krajenke led the team with a 713 series and was followed by David Ewald (690), 1999 Team All-Events champion Kerry Kreft (643), Bauss (617) and Mark Moore (605).

"This is one of those things in bowling you always hope to win," Bauss said. "I know a lot of good bowlers who don't have Eagles. Now, we just have to figure out where to put the trophy in our pro shop."

Rollrite Pro Shop of Nottingham, England, finished the Regular Team event in fifth position. Team England members Leon Devlin, Darren Cundy, Neil Highgate, Paul Moor and Nick Froggatt made ABC Tournament history when they became the first team from overseas that seized the lead in the team event on March 21. The last non-USA team winner was Plaza Lanes from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada back in 1966.

There were 19 perfect games bowled during the 2004 Championships along with five 299 games, two 298s and one 800 series.

The unofficial estimated low to cash numbers in Regular Division are: Team (2,623), Doubles (1,083), Singles (553), All-Events (1,695).

This year's ABC Tournament attracted 16,585 teams, second only to the event's first visit to the National Bowling Stadium in 1995 when 17,285 teams competed. This year's event also featured a record $6 million prize fund surpassing last year's $4.45 million.

Ryan Downs of Pflugerville, Texas, tossed the highest series of his life to win the Classified Singles title. The 28-year-old airline pilot had games of 248, 209 and 237 for a 694 series.

"This last week has been a little nerve racking because I was hoping nobody would come along and beat it," Downs said. "Now that I got the phone call, it's a lot of weight off my shoulders."

Two Classified champions came from the town of Vallejo, Calif., as Connections #3 took the Classified Team title and Lou Ortiz claimed the Classified All-Events championship.

Connections #3 competed on the opening squad of the ABC Tournament on Feb. 14 and totaled 2,775. James Broussard led the team with a 632 series and was followed by James Thomas (603), James Riley (544), Greg Broussard (507) and Nathaniel Tyner (489).

Ortiz, who competed on May 8, shot 1,795 to win the all-events title. He shot 568 in team, 587 in doubles and 640 in singles.

Two long-time partners teamed up to win the Classified Doubles title. Kent Smallcomb of Kearney, Neb., had a 641 series and Larry Harrington of Whitehall, Mont., totaled 604 as the pair shot 1,245. "This is great," Smallcomb said. "I've always wanted to be a champion but never thought I would ever do it."
