Larpapharat and Petrick end World Youth Championships with victory in Masters

 Yannaphon Larpapharat from Thailand and Junior Team USA's Jennifer Petrick earned the coveted Masters titles to conclude the 8th WTBA World Youth Championships at Central Lanes in Agana, Guam. Larpapharat defeated No. 1 seed Jason Belmonte, Australia, 415-392, in boys' finals over two games total pinfall. Jennifer Petrick topped teammate Stefanie Nation in the girls championship match, 414-404. Wu Siu Hong of Hong Kong and Korea's Kang Hyun-Jin earned bronze. Picture courtesy of Thord Lagercrantz.

Jason Belmonte and Jennifer Petrick earn topseed for Masters finals

 Jason Belmonte (pictured) is vying for his third title at the World Youth Championships in Guam. The Australian shot a 1795, 8-game series on the long oil pattern to help grab the top seed for the boys' stepladder finals. Yannaphon Larpapharat, Thailand, and Wu Siu Hong, Hong Kong, will meet in the opening match of the three-player shootout. Jennifer Petrick, USA, maintained her lead to earn the No. 1 seed in the girls' finals. Her teammate, Junior national champion Stefanie Nation, posted the highest set of 1662 today and moved from 4th to second to meet Korea's Kang Hyun-Jin in the first match.

Mikael Kanold leads in Boys Masters after the first block

 Mikael Kanold took the lead in the Boys Masters at the World Youth Championships in Guam with an outstanding 8-game series of 1770 (228,75 average). The Swede started out slow on the short oil pattern (33 feet) with 153 and 183, then shot games of 254, 262, 239, 218, 235 and 226.

Kanold won six of his eight matches (10 pins bonus per win) to hold a 22-pin buffer over second-placed Yannaphon Larpapharat from Thailand, who knocked down 1748 pins en route to a 6-2 record. Trailing Yannaphon by 31 pins to sit in third place is Wu Siu Hong, Hong Kong. Wu toppled 1737 pins and compiled a 5-3 won-lost record.

Rounding out the top five players with a 220-plus average are Mark Buffa, Canada, and Isao Yamamoto, Japan. Singles and All Event champion Jason Belmonte, Australia, is mere 73 pins behind the leader in sixth position.

The 16 player will return on Sunday for the second 8-game block on the long oil pattern (43 feet). The top 3 will advance to the stepladder finals to determine the Masters champion.
