PBA National Tour #20

Patrick Allen captures his seventh career PBA Tour title in Great Lakes Classic

Spectrum Lanes in Grand Rapids, MI (March 29 - April 2, 2006)

2005PBA20PatrickAllen.jpg Patrick Allen isn't quite ready to relinquish his Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Player of the Year title just yet. The 2005 PBA Player of the Year won his second title of the season, defeating Patrick Healey Jr., 259-193, in the title match of the 2006 Great Lakes Classic at Spectrum Lanes. Allen, who won four titles last season including the 2005 Denny's World Championship, captured his seventh career title.

"Obviously it's been a long season. This was a tough week with guys trying to get exempt for next year," said Allen, Tarrytown, N.Y., who took home $40,000 for the win. "To make the show and get a title this late in the season after the season I had last year is very gratifying, and hopefully silences the critics who said I was a one-year wonder."

Allen started the title match with strikes in the first three frames, and after a spare in the fourth and a strike in the fifth, he got a huge break in the sixth. Allen left a 7-10 split, but the 7-pin fell late, helping Allen avoid a possible open frame.

Patrick Healey Jr..jpg Healey, meanwhile, suffered through five-consecutive nine-spares in frames 3-7, then opened in the 9th frame. Allen took advantage by striking on his final six shots to clinch the title.

Pete Weber.jpg Allen advanced to the title match with a 248-245 win over Pete Weber (right). Weber took the early lead with four straight strikes in frames 3-6. Two straight spares, however, gave Allen a chance to take control and he did with five consecutive strikes. Allen struck with his first ball in the 10th and knocked down nine on his next shot to shut Weber out.

Chris Barnes.jpg Healey advanced to the title match with a 258-188 win over Chris Barnes. Healey struck in nine of his last 10 shots, while Barnes opened in the sixth frame to fall to 1-12 in his last 13 matches on TV. The win for Healey broke a four-match losing streak on TV.

Healey took home $20,000 for second, while Barnes and Weber earned $10,000 apiece for the third and fourth place finishes, respectively.

The Denny's PBA Tour heads to Uncasville, Conn., for the final event of the 2005-06 season, the 2006 Dexter Tournament of Champions April 6-9. The live ESPN finals take place Sunday, April 9 at 1 p.m. ET, with the winner taking home $100,000 and a two-season Tour exemption in the season's fourth Major.

Barnes, Allen, Weber, Healey reach final in Great Lakes Classic

Walter Ray Williams WRW.jpg Chris Barnes.jpg Chris Barnes (left) denied Walter Ray Williams Jr. (right) a chance to break Earl Anthony's all-time Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour titles record, knocking off the PBA Hall of Famer, four-games-to-three, Friday in the 2006 Great Lakes Classic at Spectrum Lanes.

Williams won the 2006 Denny's World Championship last week to win his 41st title to tie the record and was looking to make his fourth consecutive telecast. But Barnes, Flower Mound, Texas, outlasted Williams in a back-and-forth battle in which neither bowler won two games in a row.

Barnes jumped out to the early lead with a 279-206 win in game one. After they traded wins over the next four games and Barnes took a 3-2 lead, Williams forced game seven with a 275-257 win. Barnes advanced to his third championship Round of the season with a 268-214 win in game seven.

"That's the best I've bowled all year," said Barnes, who withdrew from five events earlier in the season with a back injury. "I don't know if anyone had to work harder than me Friday, beating Tommy Jones and two Hall of Famers in Amleto Monacelli and Walter Ray.

Patrick Healey Jr..jpg (Williams) is the hottest guy out here right now. He got my best game and he threw it right back at me. I was very fortunate. You know you have to throw your best stuff against him." Barnes will face fellow former Wichita State All-American and Flower Mound native Patrick Healey Jr., who defeated Jeff Carter, 4-3.

Patrick_Allen_5736.jpg Pete Weber.jpg The other semifinal features PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber (left) taking on Patrick Allen (right). Weber, who lost to Williams in last week's Denny's World Championship title match, defeated Jeff Lizzi, 4-3.

Allen, making his career-high sixth TV appearance this season, defeated Tim Criss, 4-1. The 2005 PBA Player of the Year will look to become the first top seed to win a standard Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour event in over two years.

The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. The live ESPN televised finals will take place at 1 p.m. EST.

Patrick Allen: Being number one doesn't mean anything

2004PBA19PatrickAllen.jpg Patrick Allen will look to become the first top seed to win a standard Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour event in over two years as he led the Round of 64 Thursday with a 3,325 14-game pinfall in the 2006 Great Lakes Classic at Spectrum Lanes.

Allen was the top seed in match play for last season's event at Spectrum Lanes, but finished 14th. He was also the top seed earlier this season in the 2006 GEICO Classic, but lost in the Round of 8.

"I wasn't throwing it very well tonight. I bowled well this morning, but for whatever reason I didn't execute very well tonight," said Allen, Tarrytown, N.Y., the 2005 PBA Player of the Year. "I better throw it a lot better tomorrow. Being number one doesn't mean anything unless you bowl well Friday."

Michael Haugen Jr..jpg Allen will face Michael Haugen Jr. (left) in Friday's Round of 32. Haugen finished 32nd with 3,006, one pin ahead of Mike Machuga.

The biggest story Thursday was that several bowlers needing to make the cut to earn exemptions for 2006-07 did just that. The top 37 in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings will earn exemptions for next season, and this is the final event of the season which counts toward the point rankings.

Rick Steelsmith.jpg David Traber.jpg Rick Steelsmith (left), who came into the week 35th in the point rankings fired a 279 in his final game Thursday to finish tied for 17th with 3,083. Also firing a 279 in the final game to make the cut was David Traber (right), who finished 24th with 3,045. Traber came into the week 42nd in points.

Other bowlers who needed to make the top 32 to give themselves a chance were Paul Fleming, who came into the week 37th in points, and Dale Traber, who came in 38th. Fleming finished 29th with 3,028 and Traber finished 22nd with 3,061.

Tim Criss.jpg Eugene_McCune_1774.jpg Locking up an exemption by making the top 32 was Tim Criss (left). Though he did not make the top 32, Brian Kretzer also locked up his exemption for 2006-07.

By virtue of Dennis Horan Jr. finishing outside the top 32, Eugene McCune (right) clinched an exemption for the 2006-07 season as the highest non-exempt bowler in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings. Horan had to finish in the top four to pass McCune.

The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday, April 2. The live ESPN televised finals will take place at 1 p.m. EST.

Patrick Allen comes out of the gates fast in Great Lakes Classic

Patrick_Allen_5017.jpg Reigning Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Player of the Year Patrick Allen averaged 258.57 over his seven games Thursday to lead the first session of the Round of 64 in the 2006 Great Lakes Classic at Spectrum Lanes.

Allen's 1,810 seven-game pinfall was one pin short of the highest seven-game pinfall this season, set by Jason Couch in November in the 2005 Greater Omaha Classic. Allen came out sizzling Thursday with a 290 in game one. After averaging 239 over the next four games, he shot another 290 in game six and finished with a 274 in game seven.

Allen, who won four titles last season, won his lone title this season in the 2005 Keystone State Championship in Mechanicsburg, Pa., in December. That week's event used the Chameleon oil pattern, which also is being used this week.

"I've always bowled well this time of the year for some reason. Maybe it's because the weather is nice and you get in a better frame of mind," said Allen, who won the 2005 Denny's World Championship last April. "The lanes are playing a little different than they did in Mechanicsburg. The scores are a lot higher. They're actually playing like they were in Omaha."

Walter Ray Williams WRW.jpg Walter Ray Williams Jr., who won his 41st career title in last week's Denny's World Championship to tie Earl Anthony for most career Tour titles, is third with 1,662. Williams is looking to win back-to-back titles for the fifth time in his career and the first time since 2000 to break the all-time record.

Chris Barnes.jpg Chris Barnes is second with 1,696 while PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker is fourth with 1,649. Amateur Lionel Lewis is fifth with 1,637. Though amateurs do cash in Tour events, they are not eligible to earn exemptions.

All 64 bowlers will return for another seven games tonight at 6 p.m. EST, with the top 32 advancing to Friday's single elimination, best-of-seven games match play.

This week marks the final standard event on the Tour schedule, and is the last chance for bowlers to earn exemptions for 2006-07 via the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings. The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday, April 2. The live ESPN televised finals will take place at 1 p.m. EST.

Bo Goergen leads last PBA Tour Qualifying Round of 2005-06 season

Bo Goergen.jpg Just two weeks after leading the Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour Qualifying Round as an amateur, Bo Goergen did it again - this time as a PBA member. Goergen led Wednesday's Qualifying Round for the 2006 Great Lakes Classic with a 1,630 seven-game pinfall at Spectrum Lanes.

The Midland, Mich., native led the Qualifying Round as an amateur two weeks ago in the 2006 Ace Hardware Championship in Taylor, Mich., and finished the event 15th. Amateurs are only allowed to qualify once, so he became a PBA member last week and proceeded to lead the field again.

"I had my membership many moons ago, but I decided to go the amateur route for a while. But the PBA has gone in the right direction the last few years," said Goergen, 45, who runs a bowling center with his brother in Midland. "It just so happens that my roll has really matched up with the patterns the two events I've bowled. I've been working on something with my timing and that has really panned out for me."

Goergen started the day on the right foot with a 279 in game one. After averaging just 208 over the next three games, Goergen finished strong with games of 233, 237 and 257 to take the lead.

Kelly_Kulick_2760.jpg Kelly Kulick became the third women to ever advance into a standard Denny's PBA Tour event, shooting back-to-back games of 280 in games six and seven. She qualified as the fifth PBA member, finishing sixth overall with 1,562. Kulick joins Liz Johnson and Cathy Dorin-Lizzi as the only women to advance from a Qualifying Round.

Johnson, who made history last season at Spectrum Lanes by advancing from the Qualifying Round and finishing second in the 2005 Banquet Open, finished out of the cut in 20th with 1,473.

Other PBA members qualifying were Jeff Lizzi, Brian Waliczek, Brian Hatcher, Dennis Horan Jr. and Jeff Carter.

Dennis_Horan_2784.jpg Horan can earn an exemption for next season should he finish at least fourth this week. The top non-exempt bowler in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings earns an exemption for 2006-07, and Horan currently trails Eugene McCune. If Horan finishes fourth, he will pass McCune in the standings.

Lionel Lewis was fourth overall and qualified as the highest amateur with 1,568.

This week the top seven PBA members advanced instead of the usual four as exempt bowlers Robert Smith and Doug Kent withdrew from the event and no Commissioner's Exemption was awarded.

The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday, April 2. The live ESPN televised finals will take place at 1 p.m. EST.
