Two in a row for Colombia, Sara Vargas wins women's World Ranking Masters

Sara Vargas of Colombia followed in the footsteps of defending champion Clara Juliana Guerrero as she defeated Putty Armein, Indonesia, two-games-to-one, en route to win the 2006 women's World Ranking Masters in Kuwait. Vargas, the No. 6 seed, decided to start on the short-oil pattern and lost the game, 176-185. She flew past her opponent, seeded 8th, on the long pattern with a 278-193 victory and beat Armein by three pins in the deciding game, 187-184.

Men's and women's No. 1 seeds, Wu Siu Hong from Hong Kong and Germany's Tanya Petty, both were sidelined by the No. 8 seeded players in the first match play round of the 2006 World Ranking Masters finals. Siu Hong went out in two games against local favorite Khalid Al Dubyan, 2-0, in the best-of-three games format. Petty lost the deciding third game against Putty Armein (pictured), Indonesia 234-183.

Robert Andersson and Shalin Zulkifli won the bonus money ($1,000 each) on the long oil pattern on the second day of qualifying in the 2006 World Ranking Masters. The Swede averaged 235 for eight games and felled 1880 pins to jump from 22nd place to 10th. Zulkifli leapfrogged from 13th to third place behind a 1796 series, a 224,50 average.

Kuwait Open champion Zulmazran Zulkifli of Malysia took the lead in the men's division at the 2006 World Ranking Masters after eight games on short oil at Cosmo Bowling in Kuwait City. Zulkifli felled 1837 pins and averaged 229,63. Places 2-5 belong to Asian bowlers. Daniel Falconi of Mexico is the best player of the American Zone in 6th place, while Peter Ljung, Sweden, is the best European in 10th place.
