In a title match between two European Bowling Tour point ranking leaders, Paul Moor of England defeated Carsten Warming Hansen of Denmark, 205-193, to win the 8th Sofia International Open 2017 Sunday at bowling center Joy Station in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Moor (right), a 17-time EBT champion who led the point ranking for three consecutive seasons (2004-06) received 7.000 Euro for the victory which doesn’t count as EBT title as the Sofia International Open is not part of the European Bowling Tour.

Hansen (left), who won the EBT point ranking in 2017, took home 5.000 Euro for second place.br>

Moor, who barely made the qualifying cut in 42nd place (cut was 44th place), had to bowl four 4-game rounds and finish in the top 4 to advance to the stepladder finals.

As the no. 2 seed, Moor sat and watched the opening match in which Georgos Stefanidis (right) of Greece topped Ramon Hilferink, Netherlands, 203-198.

Moor defeated Stefanidis in a one-sided match, 200-168, for the right to bowl top-seeded Hansen for the title. Hansen, who skipped the first round of the finals by virtue of finishing qualifying in the top 16, rolled four-game series of 885, 915 and 944, an average of 228.67, to earn the no. 1 seed.

Stefanidis earned 3.500 Euro and Hilferink (left) pocketed 2.500 Euro for fourth place.

The 8th Sofia International Open 2017, a popular but non-European Bowling Tour event, was held from Oct. 21-29 at bowling center Joy Station, a 20-laner in Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria.

The tournament, which drew 230 players from 28 countries, 191 men and 39 women, offered total prize fund of 55.000 Euro with 7.000 Euro going to the winner and a last-to-cash payout of 350 Euro for 56th place.

Qualifying of the Sofia Open ran through Saturday, Oct. 28, and concluded with the one-game Desperado Squad. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game (maximum is 300).

Total 56 players advanced to the finals on Sunday, Oct. 29, including top 44 qualifiers, top 6 from squads 1-16, top 2 from squads 17-25, and top 4 of the Desperado Squad. Top 8 qualifiers earned two byes and qualifiers 9-16 received a first-round bye.

The other 40 players advanced to the first of four 4-game rounds (rounds 1-3 starting from scratch). The field was trimmed to 36, 20, and then 10 players who determined the finalists in the last four-game round with the pinfall from Round 3 being carried forward. The top 4 after eight games bowled for the title in a traditional stepladder final.
