Finland's Pöllänen and Colombia's Otalora win Singles gold at the 8th World Games

2009WGKristaPollanen_small.jpg2009WGManualOtalora_small.jpgThird seeded Krista Pöllänen (pictured left), Finland, and second seeded Manuel Otalora (right), Colombia, claimed the women's and men's singles titles in the 8th World Games 2009 Wednesday at Happy Bowling Alley in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei, Top seeded Zara Glover, England, and Wu Siu Hong, Hong Kong, had to settle for silver, while Liza Del Rosario, Philippines, and Adrian Ang, Malaysia, got bronze.

Glover, Kong lead top 10 men and women into round robin match play

2009WGZaraGlover2_small.jpg2009WGKongByoungHee2_small.jpgZara Glover (pictured left) of England and Kong Byoung-Hee (right), Korea, paced the women's and men's preliminaries in the World Games 2009 Tuesday at Happy Bowling Alley in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei. All players combined 12 games of preliminaries Tuesday with their six-game individual totals from Monday's mixed doubles to cut to the top 10 men and 10 women, however, pinfall is dropped heading into Wednesday's round robin match play.

Glover, Kong set the pace in Singles at World Games 2009

2009WGZaraGlover_small.jpg2009WGKongByoungHee_small.jpgZara Glover (pictured left), England, and Mixed Doubles gold medalist Kong Byoung-Hee (right), Korea, led the field of 23 men and 23 women after 12 of 18 games in the Singles competition at the 8th World Games at Happy Bowling Alley in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei. The players' individual scores from the mixed doubles carry forward and are combined with 12 additional qualifying games of singles on Tuesday. The top 10 men and top 10 women after the 18 games advance to round robin match play Wednesday morning. The top three men and top three women then advance to the stepladder finals, screened live in Europe on Eurosport 2.

Korea wins gold medal in Mixed Doubles at World Games 2009

Colombia, Malaysia get silver and bronze

Gye Min Young and Kong Byoung Hee (pictured left) from Korea won the first gold medal in the bowling competition of the World Games 2009 when they defeated top seeded Anggie Ramirez and Manuel Otalora (right), Colombia, in the championship match at Happy Bowling Alley in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei, 840-710 over two games. In the opening match, the Koreans, ousted No. 3 Zatil Iman and Adrian Ang, Malaysia, 421-391. The Colombians settled for the silver medal while the Malaysians got bronze.

Barnes, Nation look for Team USA's first gold at World Games

2009WGStefanieNationChrisBarnes_small.jpgTeam USA's Chris Barnes and Stefanie Nation (pictured left) will look to earn the United States its first gold medal in bowling at the World Games starting Monday against a field of the world's top bowlers. The 8th World Games features 46 bowlers from 23 countries, including several past world champions. Each country qualified in their respective zone with the Asian and European zones each sending eight countries, while the American zone will have seven countries represented. We were informed that the Mixed Doubles finals will be screened live on Eurosport 2 on Monday, July 20th at 8am UK time.

Team USA's Barnes, Nation to compete in World Games

2007PBAChrisBarnes_small.jpg 200809PBAWSStefanieNation_small.jpg Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, and Stefanie Nation of Arlington, Texas, will represent Team USA at the 2009 World Games this summer in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei. Bowling is one of more than 30 sports not currently included in the Olympics that will be showcased in the World Games for 11 days beginning July 16. Eight countries from each of the three zones (American, Asian and European) of the World Tenpin Bowling Association will represent bowling by sending one male and one female athlete.

Qualifying tournaments in America, Asia and Europe

2009WGLogo_small.jpg The World Games are a kind of "Olympic Games" for the most popular non-Olympic sports. Contested in the years following the Games of the Olympiad, the 8th World Games 2009 will be held in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei from July 16-26, 2009. Traditionally a medal sport in the World Games, the 3-day bowling competition will be held at Happy Bowling Alley in Kaohsiung from July 20-22. 24 spots are up for grabs, eight for each of the three FIQ/WTBA zones America, Asia and Europe. Each country will send one female and one male bowler to the Games who will compete for medals in three disciplines, Mixed Doubles and men's and women's Singles.
