Chris Barnes beats Tommy Jones to win men's World Singles Championships

Gold and silver for the U.S., bronze for Finland's Osku Palermaa and Colombia's Andrés Gómez

2012WSCMensPodium_small.jpgIn an all-Team USA affair between two 13-time PBA champions, Chris Barnes (l.) defeated Tommy Jones (right), 212-198, to win the men's gold medal in the inaugural World Singles Championships Tuesday in Limassol, Cyprus. In the semifinals, Barnes edged Colombia's Andres Gómez, 246-244, while Jones flew past Osku Palermaa of Finland, 259-199. Jones received the silver medal, while Gómez and Palermaa shared the bronze medal.

Kelly Kulick is the women's 2012 World Singles Champion

Team USA member strikes out in 10th frame to beat Latvian Diana Zavjalova, 228-226

Kelly Kulick of the United States became the first women's World Singles Champion in the history of the World Tenpin Bowling Association when she defeated Diana Zavjalova of Latvia in the title match, 228-226. Zavjalova received the silver medal. In the semifinals, Kulick survived strong charge by Esther Cheah of Malaysia, 212-207, while Zavjalova ousted Aseret Zetter of Mexico, 237-212. Cheah and Zetter shared the bronze medal.

2012BridgestoneAdKellyKulick_small.jpgAll four quarterfinal matches in the women's division at the inaugural World Singles Championships in Cyprus went the distance with Kelly Kulick, United States, Esther Cheah, Malaysia, Diana Zavjalova, Latvia and Aseret Zetter advancing to the semifinals starting at noon local time (GMT +3). Top seeded Kulick (pictured) set another high light in the Championships when she rolled the first 300 game in her match against Joline Persson-Planefors of Sweden.

Barnes (l.) and Palermaa (r.) swept their opponents in the best-of.five games quarterfinals, Gómez needed four games to win, while Jones went the distance.

The top eight players received first-round byes. Diana Zavjalova (pictured) of Latvia back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Cherie Tan of Singapore, 3-2. Zavjalova, who rolled games of 249, 264 and 216 in the last three games, meets No. 3 Rebecka Larsen of Sweden.

Kulick led the field of 57 women from 33 countries after the first block with 1373 and added the field-best 1479 series on Sunday to finish the 12-game preliminaries with 2852 total and an average of 237.67. Myria Kastori from the host country took the last spot to advance with 2435.

The top 24 men and the top 24 women with the highest 12-game totals will advance to the single-elimination bracket finals on Monday and Tuesday. The top eight players will bypass the first round of best-of-five games match play.

Jones, who led the 71-player field after six games with 1511, toppled 1247 pins Saturday for 2758 total and an average of 229.83. After a slow start into the day, Martin Pualsson (r.) of Sweden closed out his set with 234, 248 and 257 to falls one pin short of a tie with 2757 (229.75.

Kulick's team mate, 2007 World Champion in Singles Shannon O'Keefe, led Squad 5 with 1363 and an average of 227.17 to position herself in third place.

2012WSCLogo_small.jpg 44 of the expected 47 countries and regions have sent players to the inaugural World Tenpin Bowling Association World Singles Championships which got underway today with the official practice at Galactica Bowling Center in Limassol, Cyprus. The official opening ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. local time. 128 players - 72 men from 40 countries and 56 women from 33 countries have been arrived in Cyprus. All games will be played on the 41 feet "Montreal" lane conditioning pattern.
