Osku Palermaa, Daria Kovalova take Singles gold at World Games

2013WGOskuPalermaaDariaKovalova_small.jpgFinland's Osku Palermaa and the Daria Kovalova of Ukraine (pictured, l-r) claimed the 2013 World Games Singles gold medals before a packed house at the Cali Bowling Coliseum on Sunday. Palermaa defeated Norway's Mads Sandbækken, 537-441, in the two-game title match, while Kovalova narrowly beat Team USA's Kelly Kulick, 428-425. Sandbækken and Kulick earned silver medals, while Korea's Hwang Dongjun and Venezuela's Karen Marcano got bronze.

Daria Kovalova, Osku Palermaa lead as Singles Qualifying wraps up at World Games

Ukrainian, Finn lead top 10 women and top 10 men into round robin match play

2013WGOskuPalermaa_small.jpg2013WGDariaKovalova_small.jpgQualifying in the Singles event wrapped up Saturday at the 2013 World Games, but with all pins being dropped headed into round-robin match play, any of the remaining players still have a chance to reach the stepladder finals. Osku Palermaa (l.) of Finland easily led the men's field with 4375, an average of 243.06, while Ukrainian Daria Kovalova (r.) finished qualifying with 4068 and a 226 average to pace the women's field.

Singapore's Geraldine Ng, Finland's Osku Palermaa lead Singles at World Games

Ng has a 12-game total of 2650 (220.8 average), while Palermaa has totaled 3000 (250 average) to pace the men's division. Qualifying resumes with six final games of qualifying Saturday. The top 10 after 18 games will advance to match play.

Team USA wins first World Games bowling gold medal in history

2013WGKellyKulickMikeFagan_small.jpgTeam USA won its first gold medal in bowling in World Games history Thursday night as Mike Fagan (r.) of Fort Worth, Texas, and Kelly Kulick (l.) of Union, N.J., won the mixed doubles title. In the two-game gold-medal match, Team USA defeated Canada, 905-871, before a near capacity crowd at Cali Bowling Coliseum. Team USA knocked off Mexico in the semifinal to advance to the gold-medal match. The United States had previously been shut out of the gold medals.

2013WorldGamesLogo_small.jpg With the conclusion of the European Champions Cup in The Netherlands, the field is set for the bowling competition of the IX World Games July 25 to Aug. 4, 2013 in Cali, Colombia. The World Games are an international multi-sport event, meant for sports, or disciplines or events within a sport, which are not contested in the Olympic Games. Each of the three zones of the World Tenpin Bowling Association (WTBA) had its own qualifying event to determine the participants for the bowling competition, which will be held Aug 1 to 4.
