Japanese Bowling Centers join Bowling Proprietors' Association of America

2010BPAALogo_small.jpg Nearly 60 bowling centers representing more than 2,000 lanes in Japan have joined the BPAA through the International Membership Program. The centers belong to Brunswick Kai, a group of Brunswick equipped bowling centers that was founded in 1974 to help unite the bowling industry in Japan. Hiroshi Funaki, President of Brunswick Kai, plans to bring a group of more than 30 Japanese members to International Bowl Expo scheduled for Las Vegas this June.

BPAA partners with Award Company of America

2010BPAALogo_small.jpgThe Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA) and Award Company of America (ACA) have reached an agreement to make ACA the Official Awards Partner for BPAA centers. ACA provides a full line of awards and special products, including specialty items, to public and private organizations throughout the world. ACA also works with local and state associations of the United States Bowling Congress to provide awards.

Past BPAA President and Hall of Famer Rex Golobic dies at age 91

20150108BPAARexGolobic_small.jpg Rex Golobic, a former president of the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America and a BPAA Hall of Fame member, passed away at his home on January 8, 2015. Golobic was a talented bowler early in his career, holding a 200 average for many years, ranking in the top one percent of all bowlers worldwide in 1950. He also was a charter member of the Professional Bowlers Association. He served as a committee member and officer at every level of the BPAA, including president from 1972-1974. He was selected to the BPAA Hall of Fame in 1986.

All American Family Tournament adds $50,000 in scholarships

2014AllAmericanFamilyTournamentLogo_small.jpg The All American Family Tournament will have $50,000 in guaranteed scholarships added when the national championships are held in the Chicago area next summer. The premier national event to showcase the more recreational side of the game, the All American Family Tournament was developed through International Bowling Campus Youth Development and the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA) so families could compete together on the lanes.

Shannon Pluhowsky wins 2014 BPAA Women's All-Star

2014BPAAWomensAllStarShannonPluhowsky_small.jpg 2014BPAAWomensAllStarDianaZavjalova_small.jpgIn a week where strikes were hard to come by, Team USA member Shannon Pluhowsky (l.) of Dayton, Ohio, stepped up and delivered one to remember as she defeated Diana Zavjalova (r.) of Latvia, 225-212, in the championship match of the BPAA Women's All-Star Tournament. Zavjalova clung to a one-pin lead until a missed 2-4-8-10 split in the ninth frame gave Pluhowsky a chance to shut her out.

Shannon Pluhowsky earns top seed for stepladder at BPAA Women's All-Star

2014BPAAWomensAllStarFinalists_small.jpg Team USA member Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, conquered a challenging lane condition and bested some of the best female bowlers in the world on the way to the top seed for the stepladder finals of the BPAA Women's All-Star Tournament. The 31-year-old left-hander averaged 218.5 in her 16 games of match play Thursday at The Cherry Bowl and settled into the top spot with a 7,713 total for 34 games this week, including a 14-2 match play record.

Paula Vidad defends title in 2014 Bowling's Senior Women's U.S. Open

Tish Johnson wins Triple Crown Shoot-Out

2014SeniorWUSOPaulaVidad_small.jpgPaula Vidad (pictured) of Sun City, California, successfully defended her title at Bowling's Senior Women's U.S. Open with a 234-210 win Thursday against United States Bowling Congress Hall of Famer Tish Johnson of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Vidad, a 54-year-old right-hander, started the title tilt at The Cherry Bowl with three consecutive strikes and struck on the first shot of her final frame to lock up the green jacket and $3,000 top prize. Johnson received $2,000 for second place.

Illinois, Kansas teams take top honors at 2014 International Family Tournament

2014InternationalFamilyTournamentLogo_small.jpgTwelve pins were the difference between first and second place in the Parent/Youth division of the 39th Annual International Family Tournament presented by QubicaAMF (IFT). The tournament, held this year at Don Carter Lanes in Rockford, Illinois, July 19-21, drew 36 Parent/Youth and 38 Parent/Teen teams representing 25 states and the U.S. Navy for three days of fun and friendly competition for a share of a $70,000 scholarship pool.

Woessner averaged more than 224 on the way to a 1,347 six-game total Monday at The Cherry Bowl to pace the 75-player BPAA Women's All-Star field. Schmidt's 1,192 leads the 28 bowlers competing in the Senior Women's U.S. Open.

The All American Family Tournament will be a premier national event to showcase the more recreational side of the game. It is designed to engage families who love to bowl and give those families an outlet to compete together in a sport everyone enjoys.

USBC, BPAA reach agreement to bring back Bowling's U.S. Open

Agreement does not include a broadcast television partner for the events

In an agreement announced Friday, USBC and BPAA have agreed to a three-year deal that will see USBC operate and conduct the U.S. Open for men and women in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Frank DeSocio named as BPAA Executive Director

Announcement ends six-month national search

STEFrankDeSocio_small.jpgThe Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA) announced today that Frank DeSocio (pictured) of Wichita, Kansas, has been named as its new executive director. The announcement comes after the recent BPAA board of directors meeting in Reno, Nevada. DeSocio will officially assume his new position July 1, 2014. The announcement ends a six-month search to fill the vacancy during which time BPAA executive officers rotated executive director duties. DeSocio replaces previous executive director Steve Johnson who resigned in October.

Former BPAA President and Hall of Famer Harry Wells dead at 85

20140318BPAAHarryWells_small.jpg BPAA Hall of Fame member, and former president, Harry M. Wells passed away Tuesday, March 18 in Ohio. He was 85. Wells was born in the Bucyrus, Ohio area where he lived all his life. He formed an insurance business in 1949 before starting and operating Suburban and Gala Lanes from 1963-1991. He was president of the BPAA from 1982-84 during which time the organization celebrated its 50th anniversary. In 1993, Wells was honored with the Victor Lerner Memorial Medal and induction into the BPAA Hall of Fame.

BPAA President Cathy DeSocio made the announcement during the BPAA Bowling Summit Industry Update and Town Hall Meeting, Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at the Omni Hotel in San Diego. The BPAA Industry Awards will be presented in June at Bowl Expo in Orlando, Fla.

The Women's All Star Tournament and Bowling's U.S. Senior Women's Open are scheduled for Rockford, Illinois in mid-July 2014. The two contests include a dinner honoring women bowlers as well as other events celebrating the history of women's professional bowling. Women's pro bowling started in 1959 with the original PWBA.

BPAA Executive Director Steve Johnson steps down

2009BPAAEDStevenJohnson_small.jpgThe Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA) announced today Steve Johnson (pictured) resigned as executive director, effective immediately. The announcement was made during a board of directors meeting. BPAA President Cathy DeSocio said BPAA will begin a national search for a successor. In the meantime, the officer group of the board consisting of DeSocio, President-elect Tom Martino, Secretary Alan Nordman and Treasurer Nancy Schenk will assume interim executive director responsibilities until a replacement is chosen.

Announced today by the BPAA, following the completion of the men's and women's tournaments at the 2013 Bowling's U.S. Open, the male and female champions will compete in a historic contest to crown the ultimate Open winner live on ESPN on Saturday July 27, in Columbus, Ohio.

Seven others will be recognized with BPAA Industry Service Awards during BPAA's annual meeting June 24 at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. Hero Noda (r.), Japan, will receive the V.A. Wapensky Award presented to an individual who has made a major contribution to the advancement of the bowling industry.

2013LITUSOpenLogo_small.jpg The BPAA today revealed the official title sponsor of this year's highly anticipated Bowling's U.S. Open tournament Lipton Iced Tea. For the second year in row, the bowling industry has teamed up with the brand's ready-to-drink portfolio for a principal sponsorship deal to lead the industry's preeminent bowling tournament. The 2013 Bowling's U.S. Open will be held in Columbus, Ohio, beginning July 20, and will combine the Men's, Women's and Senior Women's tournaments.
