Youth bowlers age 15 and younger have a new reason to be United States Bowling Congress Junior Gold members with the creation of a U15 development program for Junior Team USA. The move comes in connection with a successful addition of a new U15 division as part of the North Pointe Junior Gold Championships. Four U15 bowlers in the recently completed Junior Gold Championships earned the first spots in the new developmental program.
Four bowlers earned national youth titles Friday at the 2012 North Pointe Junior Gold Championships. AJ Johnson of Oswego, Ill., Robyn Renslow of Brentwood, Calif., Bradley Crouse, Nazareth, Pa., and Breanna Clemmer, Clover, S.C., all came away with championships in their respective divisions at Woodland Bowl. A record total of 1,929 athletes took part in the event competing for more than $250,000 in scholarships.

Michael Coffey of Melbourne, Fla., Matthew Farber of Plainview, N.Y., Natalie Goodman of O'Fallon, Ill., and Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, N.Y., all earned automatic spots on Junior Team USA in 2013 by virtue of their 25-game totals in the 20-and-under division to end qualifying at Woodland Bowl.

After back-to-back years of strong performances at the North Pointe Junior Gold Championships presented by Brunswick, Thea Aspiras (pictured) of Chesapeake, Va., is once again lingering near the top of the leaderboard. The Norfolk State junior finished 37th last year in Las Vegas and sixth two years ago in Indianapolis. After 15 games of qualifying, she sits in 14th place in the 20-and-under division with 2,897 (193.13 average) and is again in position for a big finish. Competing on a long, medium and short pattern, the players are challenged by the USBC Sport Bowling conditions. And for the 20-and-under boys who wrapped up competition on the short pattern Tuesday morning, they were put to the test like never before.
For the first time in the 15-year history of the event, the North Pointe Junior Gold Championships are broken into divisions by age. But that didn't stop nine brave bowlers in the younger division from challenging their older counterparts. Six boys and three girls eligible for the 15-and-under division opted to compete in the 20-and-under division, which began with the opening round of qualifying Monday. Junior Gold program has more than 4,000 members for the first time in the program's 15-year history
A record number of youth bowlers will take part in the North Pointe Junior Gold Championships presented by Brunswick next month in Indianapolis, and the USBC Junior Gold program already has established a membership record for the 2011-12 season. The 2012 Championships has sold 2,088 spots, shattering the previous record of 1,980 set in 2009. The Junior Gold program has more than 4,000 members for the first time in the program's 15-year history.
With record scholarships on the line in the 2012 North Pointe Junior Gold Championships presented by Brunswick will shift to a double-elimination match-play bracket for the top 16 bowlers in each of four divisions. The event, which will have $250,000 in scholarships up for grabs, is expected to draw nearly 2,000 bowlers from across the country to Indianapolis from July 14-20. In addition to scholarships, bowlers will be competing for spots on Junior Team USA.

The biggest youth bowling tournaments in the nation, the USBC Junior Gold Championships and the USBC Youth Open, will return to Indianapolis in 2012. Woodland Bowl, Western Bowl and Expo Bowl will be the host centers for Junior Gold with the semifinals and finals to be contested at Woodland Bowl. Expo Bowl will be the site of the Youth Open. The three centers played host to the events in 2009 and 2010.
