Sweden leads top 15 European women teams to World Championships 2013

2012WECLogo_small.jpgThe 4th Women's European Championships, which concluded yesterday with the arena finals at Efteling Theater in Tilburg, Netherlands, served as the qualifying event for the 2013 combined World Championships which will be held from Aug. 18-31 in suburban Las Vegas, United States. Sweden finished atop the point ranking with 1616 points. Germany was a distant second with 1218 followed by England (1109), Denmark (916) and Netherlands (891).

Sophie Van Der Meer wins Masters title to end 4th Women's European Championships

Germany's Birgit Pöppler takes silver; Swedes Rebecka Larsen and Joline Persson-Planefors share the bronze medal

2012WECMastersSophieVanDerMeer_small.jpg Sophie Van Der Meer (pictured) gave the host country Netherlands its lone medal in the 4th Women's European Championships when she defeated Birgit Pöppler of Germany, two-games-to-one, to claim the coveted Masters title Saturday at Efteling Theater in Tilburg. Pöppler received the silver medal while two-time gold medalists Rebecka Larsen and Joline Persson-Planefors of Sweden shared the bronze medal. Sweden led the medal tally with three gold and five bronze medals.

England beats Germany to win Team gold at 4th Women's European Championships

Sweden and Denmark share the bronze medal

2012WECTeamEngland2_small.jpgIn an arena-style finale at Efteling Theater in Tilburg, Netherlands, Lisa John, Autum Chamberlain, Hayley Rumkee, Jenny Billingham and Hayley White of England (pictured with the coaches) defeated Germany's Birgit Pöppler, Patricia Luoto, Janine Gabel, Vanessa Timter and Janin Ribguth, 1049-919, to earn the coveted five-player Team title at the 4th Women's European Championships. Germany had to settle for the silver medal. Sweden and Denmark, who went out in the semifinals, shared the bronze medal.

It's down to four players in Masters at 4th Women's European Championships

Larsen, Persson-Planefors, Pöppler and Van Der Meer to bowl for the Masters title in Saturday's arena finals at Efteling Theater

2012WECMastersTop4_small.jpgRebecka Larsen and Joline Persson-Planefors of Sweden, Birgit Pöppler of Germany and Sophie Van Der Meer of the host country Netherlands remained undefeated in Friday's single-elimination Masters match play and will bowl for the title in Saturday's arena finals at Efteling Theater in Tilburg. Larsen and Persson-Planefors are targeting for their third gold medal of the championships. Larsen will take on Van Der Meer in the semifinals while Persson-Planefors bowls Pöppler.

England stunned top seeded Sweden in the semifinals, 1146-114, while Germany edged Denmark, 1030-1021.

Sweden targets gold medals #3 and #4 at 4th Women's European Championships

Swedish fivesome lead Team event after 3/6 games; Rebecka Larsen overtakes lead in All Events after 21/24 games

2012WECTEamSweden_small.jpgDoubles and Trios gold medalist Sweden targets two more gold medals in the 4th Women's European Championships as the Swedish five-player team took a commanding 151-pin lead after the first block of the Team event Wednesday. Rebecka Larsen, Joline Persson-Planefors, Elin Adolfsson, Ida Andersson and Sandra Andersson rolled games of 1059, 1099 and 1089 to lead the 26 countries after three games on medium oil with 3247 and an average of 216.47.

Second gold medal for Sweden in Trios event at 4th Women's European Championships

Swedes defeat Germany in the title match, 693-588; Latvia and Denmark share the bronze medals

In the title match, the top seeded Swedes flew past No. 2 Patricia Luoto, Birgit Pöppler and Janine Gabel of Germany, 693-588, to wrap up the title. It was the second gold medal in the second event for Sweden. The Championhips continues Wednesday and Thursday with the five-player Team event.

With 2051 total, Sweden holds a 44-pin lead over Latvia in second place with 2007. Germany is third with 1943 with Denmark in fourth and fifth place with 1925 and 1921, resp.

In the title match against Autum Chamberlain and Hayley Rumkee of England, seeded third, Persson-Planefors rolled a huge 246 game to carry the team to a 397-361 victory.

Swedes pace WEC Doubles as Squad 1 and 2 have completed preliminaries

Squad 3 and 4 will bowl the second block on long oil Sunday

The scores on long oil were lower than on medium oil. Joline Persson-Planefors and Ida Andersson of Sweden (l-r), who led Squad 1 after the first block with 2642, totaled 2489 in the second block to pace the field of 37 doubles, who have completed the preliminaries, with 5131 and an average of 213.79.

Finns Pöntinen, Pöllänen lead WEC Doubles preliminaries after the first block

Pöllänen shoots 1420 on medium oil to take the early lead in All Events

The top 4 teams with the highest 12-game total will advance to the finals on Sunday. Finns Marjo Pöntinen and Krista Pöllänen (l-r) led the high-scoring fourth squad en route to lead the record 75 doubles with 2717 total and an average of 226.42. Pöllänen led the team with the field-best 1420 series (236.67) to take the early lead in All Events.

Host country Netherlands announces team for Women's European Championships 2012

2012WECLogo_small.jpgThe Netherlands Bowling Federation (NBF), which will host the Women's European Bowling Championships, has announced the six women who will represent their country at Dolfijn Bowling in Tilburg from June 6-17, 2012. The Dutch team will consist of Bianca Wiekeraad, Ellen Jansen, Ghislaine van der Tol, Nicole Sanders, Sophie van der Meer, and Wendy Kok. Ton Plummen will serve as team manager. Head coach Peter van Zijp will be assisted by André van Gurp.

Both championships will determine the countries who will participate in the 2013 Combined World Championships in Las Vegas.
