PDW repeats as IBMA Kegel Bowler of the Month

Pete Weber, St. Ann, Missouri, has been chosen as the June 2016 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Weber won two PBA50 majors in the month. He defeated Harry Sullins of Chesterfield Township, Michigan, 223-184, for the Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open title, presented by 900 Global, and edged Paul McCordic, Sugar Land, Texas, 266-263 in the second and deciding game to win the United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters.

Pete Weber rolls on as May Bowler of the Month

2016PBALPeteWeber_small.jpgPete Weber, St. Ann, Missouri, has been chosen as the May 2016 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. PDW won twice in the month in the midst of a record PBA50 streak of four straight tournament wins. His two May wins were in the PBA50 Mooresville Ford Open, presented by Columbia 300 and Miller High Life, and in the PBA50 Johnny Petraglia BVL Open, presented by Brunswick. With the second win of the month, the 1999 PBA Hall of Famer tied a record winning three consecutive PBA50 wins, first set by Tom Baker in 2006.

Ryan Ciminelli steady as April Bowler of the Month

2016PBA06RyanCiminelli_small.jpg Ryan Ciminelli (center), Cheektowaga, New York, has been chosen as the April 2016 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Ciminelli defeated Tommy Jones, 2-0 (255-213, 225-203), in a best-of-three match for the PBA Maine Shootout crown, his sixth PBA title, fourth in the last two seasons. In close voting this month, others obtaining consideration were Walter Ray Williams Jr., E.J. Tackett, Rob Gotchall, and Pete Weber.

IBMA member Joyce Letourneau dies

20160412JoyceLetourneau_small.jpg Joyce Letourneau, former owner of the TenPin Alley bowling newspaper, died April 12 at her home in North Las Vegas following a long illness. A member of the BWAA/IBMA for 20 years, Joyce served as TenPin Alley's Operations and Sales Manager. She jointly owned the monthly paper for 16 years with her husband, IBMA member Frenchy Letourneau. An avid consumer advocate, Joyce's monthly column "Reality Bites" tossed hard and fast commentary toward slick business practices, utility weirdness, and all types of consumer fraud.

IBMA announces finalists for College Bowlers of the Year

IBMALogo_small.jpg The International Bowling Media Association has announced the sixteen nominees for the 2016 College Bowler of the Year. The committee, comprised of IBMA members who are bowling media and former college coaches, met on April 7, 2016 to determine the top eight male and female players eligible to receive the award. The IBMA College Bowler of the Year Award is given each season to the male and female bowlers who excel on the lanes in USBC officially certified tournament play.

Danielle McEwan rolls on as March Bowler of the Month

2016HHEmirCupChampionDanielleMcEwan_small.jpgDanielle McEwan of Stony Brook, New York, has been chosen as the March 2016 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. McEwan defeated Yousif Falah, Bahrain, 540-416 in a two-game total pins match to claim the H.H. Emir Cup 2016, her first World Bowling Tour title. McEwan received eight pins per game of handicap granted each woman during a WBT event, thus does not receive credit for a PBA title.

Jesper Svensson historic as February Bowler of the Month

2016PBA03JesperSvensson5_small.jpg Jesper Svensson of Sweden has been chosen as the February 2016 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Svensson defeated Mitch Beasley, Clarksville, Tennessee, 226-177, to become the youngest winner of the FireLake PBA Tournament of Champions. In the process, just days before his 21st birthday, the the reigning PBA Rookie of the Year won his first major title on the PBA Tour and his third PBA title overall.

Ageless Amleto Monacelli is IBMA January Bowler of the Month

2016PBA02AmletoMonacelli4_small.jpg Amleto Monacelli, Venezuela, has been chosen as the January 2016 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Monacelli defeated Don Barrett, England, 255-233, to win the DHC PBA Japan Invitational for his 20th PBA title. The 1997 PBA Hall of Famer becomes the fourteenth player to win 20 PBA titles, and also his third win in Japan. He defeated legendary Japanese bowler Takeo Sakai in 1987 for his first PBA title, and the late David D'Entremont in 1995.

Gary Faulkner Jr. historic as December 2015 IBMA Bowler of the Month

2015PBA23GaryFaulkner_small.jpgGary Faulkner Jr. (pictured), Memphis, Tennessee, has been unanimously selected as the December 2015 Kegel Bowler of The Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Faulkner won the Rolltech PBA World Championship, defeating E.J. Tackett, Huntington, Indiana, 216-178, in the title match, for his first Professional Bowlers Association title. Faulkner now joins 1993 PBA Tournament of Champions winner George Branham III as the only African American champions on the PBA Tour.

Ryan Ciminelli repeats as IBMA Bowler of the Month

2015PBA18RyanCiminelli_small.jpgRyan Ciminelli (pictured), Cheektowaga, New York, has been unanimously selected as the November 2015 Kegel Bowler of The Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Ciminelli won his second PBA title in as many months, the Bowlmor AMF U.S Open, defeating Dom Barrett, Colchester, England, 236-223, in the title match. This is Ciminelli's first major title and fourth overall PBA title. He also becomes the fifth bowler in the last eight years to repeat as IBMA Kegel Bowler of the Month.

Ryan Ciminelli named October IBMA Bowler of the Month

2015PBA17RyanCiminelli_small.jpg Ryan Ciminelli, Cheektowaga, New York, has been selected as the October 2015 Kegel Bowler of The Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Ciminelli won the PBA Xtra Frame South Point Las Vegas Open defeating Anthony Pepe, Elmhurst, New York, 269-211, in the title match. This was Ciminelli's third PBA title along with his first, the One A Day Earl Anthony Memorial Classic in 2011, and the Chameleon Championship at the 2013 PBA World Series of Bowling.

Liz Johnson stellar in September as IBMA Bowler of the Month

2015PWBAPlayeroftheYearLizJohnson_small.jpgLiz Johnson, Cheektowaga, New York, has been unanimously selected as the IBMA September 2015 Kegel Bowler of The Month. Johnson won the 2015 Bowlmor AMF U.S. Women's Open defeating Shannon O'Keefe of O' Fallon, Illinois, 190-189, in the title match. The following week, Johnson placed third in The Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship, the final event in the PWBA season. Based on season-long points the USBC Hall of Famer added to her stellar 2015 season by being named PWBA Player of the Year.

Amleto Monacelli masters August IBMA Bowler of the Month

Monacelli defeated Pete Weber, St. Ann, Missouri, for the USBC Senior Masters, 192-190 and 254-243 in a double-elimination rolloff. Monacelli (pictured with the tophy) conquered the elimination bracket and needed to twice defeat Weber, winner of the winner's bracket. Others obtaining votes this month were Ryan Shafer, Liz Kuhlkin, Mike Scroggins and Liz Johnson.

Longest-writing sports columnist, Mary Jane Sporar, dies at age 95

20150807IBMAMaryJaneSporar_small.jpg Mary Jane Sporar (nee Muhlig) formerly of Joliet, Ill., passed away peacefully at the Prairie Manor Nursing Home in Chicago Heights, Friday, August 7, 2015 at age 95. Well known female bowler and women's bowling advocate she wrote the bowling column for the Joliet Herald News for nearly 60 years and was the longest-writing sports columnist in the country. Sporar, an icon in the bowling industry, was inducted into seven Halls of Fame and garnered 73 industry awards for her work in print and on the radio.

Osku Palermaa named July IBMA Bowler of the Month

2015BWOJoeyYeoOskuPalermaa_small.jpgTwo-handed star Osku Palermaa of Finland (pictured with women's division winner Joey Yeo, Singapore) has been selected as the July 2015 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Palermaa defeated Isao Yamamoto of Japan, 248-224, for the Bowling World Open men's division title. In addition to the 10 million Yen top prize (approx. $81,814), Palermaa earned his fifth PBA title. This is Palermaa's third IBMA Bowler of the Month award, his first since August 2014.

Keith Hamilton voted new President of International Bowling Media Association

Freelance writer Mark Miller was elected Vice President. In addition to Hamilton, six others were either reelected or voted on as new IBMA Board members: Brian Hirsch, Phoenix; Gianmarc Manzione, St. Petersburg, Fla.; Bill Zuben, Largo, Fla.; Johnny Campos, Peoria, Ill.; Kevin Hong, Normandy Park, Wash., and Sam Vasta, Milwaukee.

Pete Weber major choice as June IBMA Bowler of the Month

2015PBA5005PeteWeber_small.jpgPete Weber (pictured) of St. Ann, Missouri, has been selected as the June 2015 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Weber threw a clutch tenth frame double to defeat Eric Forkel, 224-212, to win the Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open. Weber now has four PBA50 Tour titles, including two majors. With four remaining events on the PBA50 schedule the 2013 PBA50 Rookie of the Year is the leader on the competition points list for PBA50 Player of the Year.

Bill O'Neill reigns as May IBMA Bowler of the Month

2015PBA08BillONeill_small.jpgBill O'Neill (pictured) of Langhorne, Pennsylvania, has been selected as the May 2015 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. O'Neill downed reigning PBA Player of the year, Jason Belmonte, Australia, 247-172 for the PBA Oklahoma Open crown. O'Neill then defeated Tommy Jones, Simpsonville, South Carolina, 191-164, for the King of the Swing crown, featuring each of the four tournament winners and the top point getter of the PBA Summer Swing.

Chuck Pezzano named recipient of IBMA Hennessy Award of Merit

The International Bowling Media Association announced Chuck Pezzano (pictured), recognized as the dean of bowling writers, will receive the 2015 Hennessy Award of Merit. To say Chuck Pezzano was bowling's most famous and prolific journalist is the understatement of the century. No one ever has or ever will surpass the sheer volume of positive publicity he generated for the sport in an incredible career spanning more than 60 years. The Hennessy Award will be presented June 24, 2015 at International Bowl Expo.

Kyle Troup triumphs as April Bowler of the Month

Troup defeated top seeded Bill O'Neill, Langhorne, Pennsylvania, 210-182, in the finals of the Logo Infusion InsideBowling.com Open in St. Louis, Missouri. Troup, with numerous titles in the PBA South Region in his young career, has been a regular on the PBA Tour the past few years and is slated for action in the upcoming PBA Summer Swing in Oklahoma.
