2016 USBC Masters moves to Indianapolis, Senior Masters heads to Las Vegas

2015USBCMastersLogo_small.jpgFor the first time in more than 40 years, the USBC Masters will head to Indianapolis when the 2016 event is held at Woodland Bowl, and the 2016 USBC Senior Masters is set to take place in Las Vegas. The 2016 USBC Masters, a major event on the PBA Tour, will take place Feb. 7-14 at the 80-lane Woodland Bowl, a center that has been the site of more than 30 PBA Tour events. The Senior Masters will be held June 19-25 at the 56-lane Sam's Town Bowling Center in Las Vegas.

Webber International's Ramon Hilferink earns 2015 Billy Welu Scholarship Award

2015BillyWeluScholarshipAwardRamonHilferink_small.jpg The PBA has announced that Ramon Hilferink (pictured), a junior at Webber International University, has been awarded the PBA's Billy Welu Scholarship award for 2015. The Welu scholarship was established to annually recognize a college student who combines outstanding bowling talents with academic excellence. As the captain for the Webber International men's bowling team, Hilferink averaged 211.5 for the 2014-15 season and ranked eighth in the collegebowling.com player rankings.

Former PBA50 Player of the Year John Hricsina dies at 77

PBA50JohnHricsina1937-2015_small.jpgThe PBA has learned that seven-time PBA50 Tour champion and 1990 PBA50 Player of the Year John Hricsina of Franklin, Pa., died Monday at the age of 77. Hricsina competed in 193 PBA50 (Senior Tour) events, making 48 television appearances and compiling nearly $394,000 in career earnings. In addition to his seven PBA50 Tour wins – one title shy of the eligibility requirement for PBA Senior Hall of Fame consideration – he also won five PBA50 regional titles.

Jason Belmonte wins Best Bowler ESPY for second time

2015PBA08JasonBelmonte_small.jpgTwo-time defending PBA Player of the Year Jason Belmonte (pictured left) of Australia won the Best Bowler ESPY Award for the second time during the 2015 ESPY Awards ceremony Wednesday evening at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Belmonte, who won his first ESPY Award in 2011, was among winners in a variety of sports and special moment categories that were determined by fan voting on espn.com with the winners announced during the ESPY Awards ceremony telecast on ABC.

PBA adds South Point Bowling Plaza Fall Classic to 2015 Schedule

All-new PBA Team Challenge, PBA Doubles Championship, XF South Point Open set for October

2015PBALogo_small.jpgThe PBA will return to South Point Bowling Plaza Oct. 19-26 with a new PBA South Point Bowling Plaza Fall Classic program, featuring an all-new PBA Team Challenge, qualifying and match play rounds of the Mark Roth/Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Championship and a new PBA Tour title event, the PBA Xtra Frame South Point Las Vegas Open. The new competition program for South Point became possible when the PBA moved the GEICO World Series of Bowling VII, originally scheduled for South Point, to Reno, Nev.

2015 PBA World Championship to air live in prime time on ESPN

PBA World Series of Bowling VII moves to Reno in December; new PBA events planned for South Point in October

PBA1958Logo_mini.jpgThe 2015 Professional Bowlers Association World Championship, the main event of the PBA World Series of Bowling VII and the final major championship of the year, will be televised live in weekday prime time on ESPN for the first time in 14 years, PBA Commissioner and CEO Tom Clark announced today. The move to live two-hour coverage at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday, Dec. 17, will result in a shift of PBA World Series of Bowling VII from its previously-announced October time frame at South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas to the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev.

The industrywide youth bowling initiative, which is open to youth bowlers up to age 20, kicks off April 6, 2015.



USBC Masters telecast on ESPN reaches more than 3.5 million viewers

Ratings increase by 62 percent over last year's telecast

2015USBCMastersLogo_small.jpgThe PBA Tour telecast of the USBC Masters on ESPN was the most-watched cable sports program on Sunday, reaching more than 3.5 million viewers. The telecast, which featured two-handed Australian bowler Jason Belmonte winning a historic third-straight Masters title, averaged 1.17 million viewers in the last quarter-hour of the telecast. The two-hour telecast averaged a 0.60 household U.S. rating representing a 62 percent increase versus the 2014 USBC Masters telecast.

The Pete Weber promotional spot made its debut Sunday in conjunction with the live ESPN telecast of the United States Bowling Congress Masters. In keeping with the tradition of This Is SportsCenter's light-hearted humor, the spot portrays Weber as a stereotypical league bowler.

PBA Hall of Fame Charter member Chuck Pezzano dies at age 86

Internationally recognized bowling journalist, historian was one of a kind

20150123ChuckPezzano_small.jpgChuck Pezzano (pictured) of Clifton, N.J., a charter member of the PBA Hall of Fame and widely recognized as the dean of bowling journalists, died Friday, January 23 of cardiac arrest while undergoing a stent procedure at St. Mary's Passaic, N.J. He turned 86 on Jan. 14. Since the formation of the PBA in 1958, no one has contributed more to the organization in so many different ways than Pezzano, a founding member of the organization. He was the first Meritorious Service inductee in the inaugural PBA Hall of Fame class in 1975, among his 12 halls of fames.

The Professional Bowlers Association kicked off its 2015 season on January 1 with a full complement of companies, highlighted by long-time partners Ebonite, Brunswick, Storm and MOTIV, participating in its Product Registered program. The PBA Product Registered program was created to provide participating companies a variety of opportunities to showcase their brand-name products, logos and/or other product identification in PBA competition across America and around the world.

20130501SouthPointArena2_small.jpgSouth Point Hotel and Casino's new $35 million bowling tournament facility, South Point Bowling Plaza, rolls into Las Vegas eight months early with a full schedule of tournament events beginning on Saturday, Nov. 1. After signing a 12-year deal with United States Bowling Congress (USBC), Las Vegas Events (LVE) and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) in April 2013, South Point Bowling Plaza has scheduled 122 days of tournament operations in 2015.

Chinese bowlers make historic debut in PBA World Series of Bowling VI


A group of six bowlers from mainland China (pictured) made history this week as the first players from their country ever to bowl in professional competition. They earned the right to enter the World Series by recording averages of 200-plus in a "PBA Pioneer League" program initiated by Frank Zhao (c.). The Chinese aren't competitive, yet, but their appearance at WSOB VI may be a preview of the significant impact China may have on the world of bowling in the years ahead.
