Fairleigh Dickinson's Melanie Hannon receives 2014 PBA Billy Welu Scholarship

2013AlbertaECroweAwardMelanieHannon_small.jpgThe PBA has announced that Melanie Hannon (pictured), a sophomore at Fairleigh Dickinson University, has been awarded the PBA's Bill Welu Scholarship Award for 2014. She will receive a $1,000 scholarship. The Welu scholarship was established to annually recognize a college student who combines outstanding bowling talents with academic excellence. Hannon, of Cheektowaga, N.Y., has had a very productive year in 2014 earning NCAA and Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year honors as well as First Team All-America honors.

PBA adjusts women's dues, re-schedules Central, Midwest Region events

PBA Deputy Commissioner Kirk von Krueger (pictured) announced Friday that the PBA has adjusted membership dues for women for the balance of the 2014 season as part of a revised PBA Women's Regional program. The inaugural PBA Women's Regional program, offering women bowlers close-to-home opportunities to bowl in PBA-caliber competition, will culminate with a PBA Challenge television event on ESPN which also will feature the PBA Regional Finals match, PBA50 Tour Finals match and Teen Masters Grand Championship match.

Pete Weber wins his fourth "Best Bowler" ESPY Award

201213PBA18PeteWeber_small.jpgPBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber (pictured) of St. Ann, Mo., won his fourth Best Bowler ESPY Award Wednesday during the 22nd annual ESPY Awards ceremony at the Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Weber was the leading vote-getter among Best Bowler candidates Jason Belmonte, Wes Malott and Sean Rash, who attended the event with his wife Sara and father Gene Rash. ESPN awards for a variety of sports categories and special moments are determined by fan voting on espn.com.

Former PBA Commissioner Mike Connor dies at 81

20140712MikeConnor_small.jpg Mike Connor, who served as PBA Commissioner from 1992-1995, died July 12 at the age of 81 after a short illness. Connor, of Akron, Ohio, became PBA's second Commissioner replacing Joe Antenora who served in the position from 1978-1991. During Connor's tenure, Bud Light became the official beer of the PBA and sponsor of the PBA National Championship and Touring Players Championship. Prior to joining PBA, Connor worked for the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company where he spent 34 years.

Bill O'Neill, PBA fans were big winners in Oklahoma's Grand Casino Resort PBA Summer Swing

2014SummerSwingBillONeill_small.jpg With the 2014 Oklahoma's Grand Casino Resort PBA Summer Swing in the books, PBA Badger Open and King of the Swing winner Bill O'Neill (pictured) topped the earnings list for the second annual event with $31,700 of the more than $264,000 total prize fund. The five-day event, which allowed players to enter four events for a single entry fee, paid prize money to 55 of 115 players with three players cashing for more than $24,000 and seven players cashing for more than $10,000.

PBA announces new PBA Champion's Challenge as Part of World Series VI

ESPN telecast to feature PBA50, PBA Regional, PBA Women's Regional and Teen Masters finals

2014PBAWSOBVILogo_small.jpgFour champions in four unique areas of elite bowling competition will be crowned in a two-hour ESPN telecast emanating from the PBA World Series of Bowling VI in Las Vegas this fall. The new PBA Champion's Challenge will culminate with the tops stars of the PBA50 Tour, PBA Regional Tour, the new PBA Women's Regional Tour, and the Teen Masters boys' and girls' division champions bowling in the four-match television show at the South Point Casino complex over the Nov. 1-2 weekend.

Voting began Tuesday for the 20th annual "Best Bowler" ESPY Award, presented by ESPN. Candidates selected by ESPN for 2014 ESPY consideration are (l-r) Jason Belmonte of Australia; Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas; Sean Rash, Montgomery, Ill., and Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo. Voting ends on July 16, the date of the winners will be announced in the live ESPY telecast from Nokia Theater LA Live.

Japan Bowling Congress reacts to PBA announcement to host international events in Japan

The Japan Bowling Congress, the governing body of the sport in Japan, has informed Bowlingdigital.com that the PBA announcement conveyed the false impression that international bowlers can participate in these events.

PBA's Championship Banners have special meaning…sometimes

Colorful pennants are reserved for those won win PBA titles

For decades, colorful banners recognizing the players in PBA tournaments who have won titles have been displayed above the lanes at all PBA events. The players who win titles are given the opportunity to select the colors used on those banners. For many players, the colors they select are special tributes to an important aspect of their lives. For others, colors are a tribute to a favorite team, their home country or some other special moment. But not always.

USBC Masters moves to February in 2015 as part of PBA Tour schedule

USBCMasters_small.jpgThe United States Bowling Congress and the Professional Bowlers Association have announced a multi-year agreement to include the USBC Masters in a showcase timeslot on national television as part of the PBA Tour schedule in 2015 and 2016. Under the agreement, the 2015 USBC Masters is scheduled to be conducted at Ashwaubenon Bowl in Green Bay, Wis., starting Feb. 2 with the finals broadcast on Feb. 8. The 2015 event had previously been planned for late summer.

Collegiate star Marshall Kent to make debut as PBA member in Oklahoma

Washington native to join pro tour in time for multi-event PBA Summer Swing in Shawnee May 18-25

2014EBT04MarshallKent_small.jpgMarshall Kent (pictured), a 21-year-old native of Yakima, Wash., and predicted by many observers to be headed toward stardom in professional bowling, has announced he is joining the PBA and will compete as a member in Oklahoma's Grand Casino Resort PBA Summer Swing in Shawnee, Okla., May 18-25. Kent, a two-time Collegiate Bowler of the Year, has one more year of collegiate eligibility, but has decided to forego that option because he will graduate from Robert Morris in July with a degree in business management.

Online PBA League Auction to benefit Chris Paul's CP3 Foundation

A special Professional Bowlers Association League auction begins today on pba.com featuring a variety of autographed merchandise donated by PBA League members. Proceeds from the online auction, which ends on Wednesday, March 26, will benefit NBA star Chris Paul's CP3 Foundation. The online auction is the conclusion of a competition between PBA League teams that began during the PBA World Series of Bowling V at the South Point complex in Las Vegas in November.

2013PBA50EastPotYJohnConroy_small.jpgOn March 24, the day after John Conroy (pictured) hopes to defend his only PBA title in the PBA50 Rossi Lanes Eastern Open in Elmira, N.Y., he'll head to Washington, D.C., where he will be presented the American Ambulance Association's highest honor, the AAA Star of Life Award. Conroy, a 51-year-old New York City native and 2013 East Region PBA50 Player of the Year, was among the first responders not only for the 9-11 attack on the World Trade Center, but the 1993 bomb attack on the WTC's north tower.

The PBA World Series, which originated in 2009 at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich., as a multi-event international showcase of bowling talent, will again feature four exclusive PBA "animal pattern" championships which also will serve as qualifying events for the 2014 season's third major championship, the PBA World Championship.

Jason Belmonte makes history with back-to-back USBC Masters titles

Wins four consecutive matches to claim his ninth career title and the $50,000 top prize

Australia's Jason Belmonte became the first bowler in nearly 50 years to successfully defend a USBC Masters title on Sunday as he defeated EJ Tackett of Huntington, Ind., 221-177. Belmonte, the reigning Professional Bowlers Association Player of the Year, opened up a big lead early and eased to the title at Brunswick Zone Carolier. With the victory, Belmonte, who earned $50,000 for the win, is just the third player to successfully defend a Masters title, joining Billy Welu (1964 & 1965) and Dick Hoover (1956 & 1957).

Literally. On Valentine's Day, Leslie Bohn (l.) gave birth to Christian Leslie Forry, a healthy nine-pound, four-ounce, 20-inch-long baby boy. Yes, the name is correct. The baby doesn't belong to the Bohns. The child's parents are Chris and Janine Forry (r.).

Barbasol and PBA announce "Strike a Pose" contest

Contestants will submit their best "strike celebration pose" on the Barbasol Strike a Pose Facebook page. Submissions can also be posted to Instagram and Twitter using #PBAstrikeapose. The contest will run through March 26 when the winners will be decided by a panel of judges made up of Barbasol and PBA members.

In earning his first Player of the Year honor, Belmonte won two titles, including the USBC Masters – his first major – and had runner-up finishes in three other major championships: the 2012 PBA World Championship, U.S. Open and 2013 PBA Tournament of Champions.

Ryan Shafer wins second PBA Steve Nagy Sportsmanship Award

Professional Bowlers Association Commissioner Tom Clark has announced Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, N.Y., has been selected by his fellow PBA members as winner of the 2012-13 Steve Nagy Sportsmanship Award. Shafer, a 47-year-old who has won four titles in a 27-year PBA Tour career. It was a bittersweet moment for Shafer, who also won the Nagy award in 2009, coming a day after the funeral services for his wife, Michelle, who died unexpectedly five days earlier.

Parker Bohn III named first Tony Reyes Community Service Award winner

Hall of Famer recognized primarily for his work with two charities and scholarship tournament

ImageProfessional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III (pictured) of Jackson, N.J., is the first Tony Reyes Community Service Award recipient, named in honor of the late PBA Tour champion in honor of his off-the-lanes activities, PBA Commissioner Tom Clark announced today. The Tony Reyes Community Service Award will be awarded annually to a PBA member who has performed outstanding community service and made charitable and/or educational contributions over the course of the previous PBA Tour season.
