PBA to test additional refinements for Regional Program in 2014


Based on the input of players who compete in the Professional Bowlers Association's more than 160 regional tournaments annually, the PBA will introduce new programs on a trial basis in 2014, including allowing re-entries in selected events, conducting additional tournaments exclusively for non-title winners and expanding its one-day, reduced entry fee tournament schedule. The regional program, which consists of regular and PBA50 division for players 50 years of age and older, is reviewed annually and changes are introduced to meet current demands.

PBA Hall of Famer Billy Hardwick dies at age 72

20131116BillyHardwickObit2_small.jpg Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer and two-time PBA Player of the Year Billy Hardwick of Memphis, Tenn., died of an apparent heart attack Saturday, November 16, at the age of 72. In one of the greatest turnarounds in professional bowling history, Hardwick went from a rookie PBA Tour season in 1962 failing to cash in a single event, to winning four titles and becoming Player of the Year the very next season. After winning 18 PBA Tour titles in his career, Hardwick retired after the 1976 season and was inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame in 1977.

New Detroit Open kicks off extended 2014 PBA League week

Thunderbowl to host new open-field tournament; live PBA League coverage set for ESPN on January 26

201112PBALogo_small.jpgA new singles tournament will kick off the extended 11-day PBA League Week at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich., Jan. 17-19. The PBA Detroit Open will be an open-field PBA Tour title event beginning with a nine-game qualifying round on Saturday, Jan. 18. The top 16 players after nine games will advance to round-robin match play on Sunday. After 16 head-to-head matches, the top four will advance to the stepladder finals at 7 p.m. ET on Jan. 19. The entire event will be webcast live on Xtra Frame.

Six-time PBA Tour titlist Dave D'Entremont dies at age 52

2013102DaveDEntremontdies_small.jpg Six-time PBA Tour champion Dave D'Entremont of Middleburg Heights, Ohio, affectionately known as "Double D" during a nearly quarter century career on Tour, died Saturday at a Cleveland area hospital at age 52. D'Entremont was a product of PBA's regional program, having honed his skills in PBA's former Headquarters (now Central) Region where he won 19 titles in addition to his six PBA Tour titles including the 1996 Brunswick World Tournament of Champions.

201112PBALogo_small.jpgAs the 2012-13 PBA Tour season enters the homestretch with the PBA World Series of Bowling V at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas beginning Oct. 25, the PBA has unveiled a new broadcast team concept along with its ESPN telecast schedule for the balance of the year and the start of the new 2014 season. Starting Sunday, Dec. 1, at 1 p.m. ET, ESPN will televise seven two-hour events from WSOB V, beginning with the PBA Cheetah Championship and running consecutive Sundays through Jan. 12.



Six-time PBA champion and USBC Hall of Famer Les Schissler dies at 83

20130907LesSchissler2_small.jpg Six-time PBA Tour champion and USBC Hall of Famer Les Schissler of Brighton, Colo., died Saturday, Sept. 7 at the age of 83. Schissler won the 1967 All-Star Tournament (now the U.S. Open) for his only major title. He won three titles in the Classic Division at the 1966 USBC Open Championships, taking the titles in singles, all-events title and team. One year later, he bowled a 300 game in the USBC Classic Team event, the first 300 game ever rolled in team competition of the prestigious tournament.

Geoff Reiss transitions to PBA Board, Tom Clark to assume daily operations responsibilities

2012PBACEOGeoffReiss2_small.jpg2013PBACommissionerTomClark2_small.jpgAfter nearly two years as Chief Executive Officer of the Professional Bowlers Association, Geoff Reiss (l.) announced today he is transitioning from his role to join the organization's board of directors, effective September 9. Commissioner Tom Clark will assume day-to-day management responsibility for the PBA. The PBA will conclude its 2012-13 season with the PBA World Series of Bowling V Oct. 25-Nov. 3 followed by the Round1 Japan Cup.

PBA Hall of Famers earn berths in PBA50 Tour Finals during World Series of Bowling

PBA50Logo_small.jpgThree of the Professional Bowlers Association's greatest players topped the season-ending PBA50 Tour stats for average, earnings and competition points. After earning his second consecutive PBA50 Player of the Year crown, Walter Ray Williams Jr. topped the earnings and standard competition points lists while finishing third in the average category behind fellow Hall of Famers Pete Weber and Amleto Monacelli. Tim Kauble became the PBA50 Tour's first Super Senior Player of the Year.

Cardinale, Pinel, Brunswick form partnership to produce high-tech bowling balls

201112PBALogo_small.jpgThe partnership between Brunswick and Radical Bowling Technologies – the high-tech ball company featuring the team of Phil Cardinale and Mo Pinel – has provided the opportunity for the newly re-branded company to become the newest member of the PBA's Registered Product Company family. The partnership agreement recently moved production of Radical bowling balls to the Brunswick manufacturing facility, and a number of exciting things have already taken place including an expansion in the worldwide distribution of Radical performance bowling balls.

Webber International standout Katie Thornton earns 2013 PBA Billy Welu Scholarship Award

2013WeluScholarshipKatieThornton_small.jpgWebber International University bowling standout Katie Thornton (pictured) of Chesapeake, Va., has been selected as the winner of the 2013 PBA Billy Welu Scholarship Award. In addition to her accomplishments as a collegiate bowler, Thornton holds a 4.0 grade point average and is currently completing her MBA studies at Webber International in Babson Park, Fla., majoring in international business. The $1,000 Billy Welu Scholarship is awarded annually in honor of the PBA Charter Member.

PBA signs deal with High 5 Gear as new Official Jersey Manufacturer

2013High5GearLogo_small.jpgThe Professional Bowlers Association has announced a new three-year agreement with High 5 Gear to become the official PBA Tour bowling jersey manufacturer, replacing Gemini Custom Apparel. High 5 Gear will be the exclusive dye-sublimated jersey in PBA competition, provide custom-designed jerseys for 60 of the PBA Tour's top players, become the official jersey of the PBA League outfitting all eight teams, and official jersey of the Chris Paul PBA League All-Stars event.

PBA League to kick off 2014 PBA Tour season in return to calendar year schedule

The new season - the PBA's 55th consecutive year - will include an expanded PBA League, three major championships, a renewal of the PBA Summer Swing and 46 hours of nationally–televised PBA Tour competition, not including a preliminary schedule of nine World Bowling Tour/PBA International Tour events conducted in cooperation with the World Tenpin Bowling Association.

Pete Weber wins third Best Bowler ESPY Award

201213PBA14PeteWeber2_small.jpgPBA Hall of Famer and 2013 PBA Tournament of Champions winner Pete Weber (pictured) of St. Ann, Mo., received his third Best Bowler ESPY Award Wednesday evening during the 2013 ESPY Awards ceremony at the Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Weber was among winners in a variety of sports categories and special moments that were determined by fan voting on espn.com with the winners announced during the ESPY Awards telecast on ESPN.

Entries now open for PBA World Series of Bowling V

WSOBVLogo_small.jpgWhat has evolved into the premier showcase of bowling competition with five Tour titles up for grabs, the PBA World Series of Bowling V returns to the South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas Oct. 25-Nov. 3. The WSOB V tournament package is open to PBA members for a $750 entry fee and includes five events – the Cheetah, Viper, Chameleon & Scorpion Championships – as well as the PBA World Championship, with the finals of each telecast by ESPN.

Four-time PBA Senior Tour champion Barry Gurney dies at 71

2013PBA50BarryGurney2_small.jpgFour-time PBA Senior Tour champion Barry Gurney of West Hills, Calif., died late Tuesday after a battle with cancer. He was 71. Gurney, who joined the PBA in 1991, won his first Senior Tour title in 1992 in the Lansing (Mich.) PBA Senior Open. He went on to win the Naples Senior Open in 1994, the Rocky Mountain Open in 1995 and the Boise Open in 1999. In addition to his Senior Tour titles he also won three Senior Regional titles and one regular PBA Regional title.

ESPN and PBA sign five-year deal

Coverage of the PBA Tour and the PBA League grows to 36 hours per year

201112PBALogo_small.jpgESPN has announced that it will expand its relationship with the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) under a new five-year deal that will see the network's previous coverage of the PBA Tour and the PBA League grow from 25.2 hours per year to 36. The deal becomes effective with the 2013 World Series of Bowling, which will debut on ESPN on Sunday, December 1, 2013. The second season of The PBA League will debut on ESPN on Sunday January 5, 2014.

2013GEICOPBASummerSwingLogo_small.jpgThe Professional Bowlers Association has unveiled three distinct new lane conditioning patterns that will debut during the GEICO PBA Summer Swing in the Milwaukee area May 20-June 2, expanding the PBA's current library of "animal pattern" lane conditions. The new lane conditioning patterns, named the Badger, Wolf and Bear, are a continuation of the animal pattern theme the PBA introduced in 2005. Along with the new patterns, the PBA has created a new series of animal pattern logos.

Game will pit men's and women's U.S. Open champions against one another July 27 live on ESPN for the ultimate championship title at the 2013 Bowling's U.S. Open


In an unprecedented moment for the U.S. Open brand, a first-ever "Battle of the Sexes" U.S. Open exhibition contest will take place during the finals at this year's competition. Announced today by the BPAA, following the completion of the men's and women's tournaments at the 2013 Bowling's U.S. Open, the male and female champions will compete in a historic contest to crown the ultimate Open winner live on ESPN on Saturday July 27, in Columbus, Ohio.
