Martin Larsen, Perttu Jussila win qualifying of the 9th Columbia Vienna Open

    Larsen leads a field of 64 players into Sunday's finals; eight players crack the top 52 in the last qualifying squad; three players tie for 52nd place at 1280 (213.33 avg.); Columbia to sponsor the 10th Vienna Open in 2012

    2011VOLogo_small.jpg2011EBT17MartinLarsen3.jpgAfter five days and 17 squads featuring 324 players - 270 men and 54 women - from 28 countries the qualifying of the 9th Columbia Vienna Open ended in an exciting showdown.

    With the last game to go, three players Kai Günter, Germany (1167); Joonas Jehkinen, Finland (1142); and Nadine Geissler, Germany (1140) had a chance to make the top 8 (1370), who earned one bye for the finals. Several other players had a shot for the top 52, who survived the first cut.

    When the dust had settled, the top eight qualifiers remained unchanged, but a total of eight players from Squad 17 moved into the top 52. Three players, Jean-Marc Lebon, Belgium; Marco Baade; Germany, and Jürgen Huprich, Austria were tied for 52nd place at 1280 (213.33 avg.). It was the Belgian, who advanced due to the highest last game.

    2011EBT13KarlWahlgren.jpg2011EBT17ClaraGuerrero3.jpgThree-time World Champion Martin Larsen (above right), Sweden, won the qualifying in style, posting a huge 1453 series in Squad 8, an average of 242.17, to beat out fellow national team member Karl Wahlgren (left, 1402) for the top spot by 51 pins. Larsen also had a 1412 series in one of his re-entries.

    Third place belonged to the best of eight women, who made cut to the top 52. Clara Juliana Guerrero (right), the two-time World Champion from Colombia, had a 1387 series including 48 pins handicap this morning to finish qualifying in third place.

    2011EBT17ChrisLyndaBarnes.jpg2011EBT17PaulMoor.jpgJean Marc Samain, Belgium, was fourth with 1386, with Thomas Larsen, Denmark, in fifth place with 1385. 13-time PBA champion and defending Vienna Open champion, Chris Barnes (pictured left with his wife, Lynda), United States, was sixth with 1379.

    Rounding out the eight were three-time European Bowling Tour ranking champion and EBT Masters winner Paul Moor (right), England, in seventh place with 1373 and Perttu Jussila, Finland, in eighth place with 1370 or an average of 228.33.

    Those eight will bypass the first round of the finals stating at 8 a.m. Sunday morning at 32-lane Plus Bowling.

    2011EBT04BenjaminKubalek.jpg2011EBT17PasiUotila.jpgGerman women's national team member Geissler, who has won two bronze medals at the Women's World Championships in Hong Kong earlier in September, finished with 181 to lead Squad 17 with 1329 including handicap to make the cut in 16th place. Jehkinen had 180 to land in 21st place with 1322. Günter, a silver medalist in Singles at the 2008 Men's World Championships in Thailand, suffered a 146 in the last game to settle for 24th place with 1313.

    Local favorite Benjamin Kubalek (left) closed out his set with 232 to land in 29th place with 1306. Long-time Finnish national team member and three-time Ballmaster Open champion Pasi Uotila (right) was close behind in 33rd place with 1299.

    Practically with the last shots, Chris Klerk, United States; Stefan Yngström and Kim Ojala, Sweden, secured 44th, 45th and 46th place with 1289, 188 and 1287, respectively.

    2011EBT17PerttuJussilaMartinLarsen.jpg2011EBT17ChrisBarnesMartinLarsen.jpgTraditionally the qualifying of the Vienna Open was contested as a doubles competition. 358 doubles have participated and there was no doubt about the winner as Martin Larsen, Sweden, and Perttu Jussila, Finland, (pictured left, r-l) the qualifying leader and the No. 8 seed, combined their series for 2823 pinfall total or an average of 235.25. The winners shared the 1.600 Euro top prize.

    Larsen and 13-time PBA champion Chris Barnes (above right), United States, were second with 2708, worth 1.200 Euro.

    Joining the top 52 in the finals were six players, one each from the first six qualifying squads: Squad 1 Rene Landl (right), Austria; Squad 2 Luminita Farkas, Romania Squad 3 Alexander Rauscher, Austria; Squad 4 Yavor Milanov, Bulgaria; Squad 5 Anton Stiel, Austria; and Squad 6 Sascha Wedel, Denmark:

    The last six spots were determined in the one-game Desperado Squad. Tobias Börding, Germany led a field of 70 players with 259, and was followed by Samu Valaranta, Finland, with 258 and Carsten Warming Hansen, Denmark with 247.

    Steve Miller, England, was fourth with 233, with Heidi Thorstensen, Norway, in fifth with 232 including eight pins handicap. Yossi Volpert beat out his son Nati Volpert, Israel, for the sixth and last spot by five pins, 231 to 226.

    2011VOLogo_small.jpg The 9th Columbia 300 Vienna Open is the 17th stop of the 2011 European Bowling Tour and the last of six EBT "Gold" tournaments this season. 325 players from 30 countries are expected to compete for total prize fund of 70.630 Euro (approx. $95,000) - 60.400 € for Singles and 10.230 € for the Doubles event.

    The singles champion will receive the 7.000 € top prize, the runner-up earns 5.000 and the third-place finisher gets 3.500 Euro. The doubles winners will split 1.600 €.

    EboniteLogo_mini.jpg In addition, players can earn money for a Perfect Columbia Game ($1,000 for every 300 game bowled in the tournament with a Columbia 300 ball), a Perfect Ebonite Game ($500 for every 300 game bowled in the tournament with a ball manufactured by EBONITE International, including the brands of Ebonite, Track and Hammer) and a Columbia Early Bird Award ($500 for the leader of each of the first seven squads of the tournament. To qualify for this award, the player must be wearing a shirt and must also be using a ball from any of the EBONITE International brands including Columbia 300, Ebonite, Track and Hammer).

    The Vienna Open features a 41 feet Kegel lane conditioning pattern with 26.2ml volume oil total.

    The qualifying is traditionally contested as a Doubles tournament with separate prize money. Each duo rolls at least one six-game block. Unlimited re-entries with different partners are possible but each player can only cash once with the same partner.

    Qualifying runs from Tuesday through Saturday and concludes with Squad 17 Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. and ends with the ultimate one-game Desperado Squad on Saturday night slated for 11.30 p.m. CET. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, a standard on the European Bowling Tour

    A total of 64 players will qualify for the Vienna Open finals on Sunday, Oct. 2:
    • the top 52 players from the overall qualifying standings
    • the first player each from Squad 1-6, who is not among the top 52 (total 6 players)
    • and the top 6 from the Desperado Squad.

    The top 8 qualifying leaders will bypass the first round of the finals. The other 56 players will bowl 6 games starting from scratch to cut to the top 22, who will join the top qualifiers in Round Two.

    Those 30 players will bowl another 6 games starting from scratch after which the field will be trimmed to the top 18, who will carry their pinfall forward into Round Three. After another 6-game block the top 4 with the highest 12-game total will advance to the stepladder finals.

    The No. 4 seed meets the No. 3 in the opening match and the winner takes on the No. 2 seed for the right to bowl the top seed for the title, 150 ranking points and the 7.000 Euro top prize.

    Since the English Open has lost its EBT status, the 2011 European Bowling Tour consists of 20 tour stops in 16 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, six Silver and six Satellite tournaments.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament such as the Vienna Open gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament gets 50 ranking points.

    The top 16 men and the top 16 women at the end of the 2011 season qualify for the fifth EBT Masters to be held at Dream-Bowl Palace in Unterföhring near Munich, Germany on April 30 and May 1, 2012. The event will become the first EBT Masters to be contested on single lane condition.
