Dominic Barrett averages over 240 to lead Final Round One at Vienna Open

    Barrett had games of 225, 247, 216, 279, 267 and 215 for 1449 six-game total and out averaged his nearest competitor by more than 15 pins.

    The photo on top shows "Theras", a black pug, who has become the mascot of the tournament, and "Ottakringer", the official beer at Plus Bowling.

    Fifth and sixth place belonged to Finland's Pasi Uotila and Osku Palermaa with 1338 and 1324.

    Rounding out the top 10 were 7. Dennis Eklund, Sweden 1317; 8. Steve Miller, England, 1299; 9. Rasmus Ussing, Denmark, 1299; and 10. Erik Andersin, Sweden, 1298.

    2011EBT17ThomasGross2.jpg2011EBT04BenjaminKubalek.jpgAmong the top 22, who survived the second cut were two Austrian bowlers. Thomas Gross (left) finished with 258 to land in 11th place with 1296. Benjamin Kubalek struck ten times in his last game (231) to finish in 19th place with 1259.

    Juhani Tonteri, Finland, beat out the best woman in that round, Lisanne Breeschoten, Netherlands, for the 22nd and last place to advance by five pins, 1250 to 1245.

    As all ten women in Final Round One have been eliminated, Clara Juliana Guerrero of Colombia, has already won the women's ranking in Vienna. It is the second ranking title for the Columbia staffer after her victory in the EBT "Platinum" Brunswick Euro Challenge in March.

    The top 22 will meet the top eight qualifiers including Guerrero, qualifying leader Martin Larsen, Sweden and PBA super star and defending champion Chris Barnes in Final Round Two. All previous pinfall will be dropped.

    2011VOLogo_small.jpg 2011EBT17PerttuJussilaMartinLarsen.jpg The 9th Columbia 300 Vienna Open is the 17th stop of the 2011 European Bowling Tour and the last of six EBT "Gold" tournaments this season. 324 players featuring 270 men and 54 women from 28 countries competed for total prize fund of 70.630 Euro (approx. $95,000) - 60.400 € for Singles and 10.230 € for the Doubles event.

    The singles champion receives the 7.000 € top prize, the runner-up earns 5.000 and the third-place finisher gets 3.500 Euro. The doubles winners, Martin Larsen, Sweden, and Perttu Jussila (r-l), Finland, split 1.600 €.

    The 9th Columbia 300 Vienna Open features a 41 feet Kegel lane conditioning pattern with 26.2ml volume oil total.

    The qualifying of the Vienna Open was traditionally contested as a Doubles tournament with separate prize money. Each duo rolled at least one six-game block. Unlimited re-entries with different partners were possible but each player could only cash once with the same partner. A total of 358 doubles participated in this year's qualifying.

    Qualifying ran from Tuesday through Saturday and concluded with Squad 17 Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. and ended with the ultimate one-game Desperado Squad on Saturday night which drew record 70 players. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, a standard on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 64 players survived the first cut of the 9th Columbia 300 Vienna Open at Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria.

    The finals started Sunday morning a 8 a.m. CET with the first round in which all but the top 8 qualifiers face off. Those 56 players bowl 6 games scratch to cut to the top 22, who will join the top 8 qualifiers in Round Two.

    The remaining 30 players bowl another 6 games scratch after which the field will be trimmed to the top 18, who will carry their pinfall forward into Round Three. After another 6-game block the top 4 with the highest 12-game total will advance to the stepladder finals.

    The No. 4 seed meets the No. 3 in the opening match and the winner takes on the No. 2 seed for the right to bowl the top seed for the title, 150 ranking points and the 7.000 Euro top prize.

    Since the English Open has lost its EBT status, the 2011 European Bowling Tour consists of 20 tour stops in 16 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, six Silver and six Satellite tournaments.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament such as the Vienna Open gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament gets 50 ranking points.

    The top 16 men and the top 16 women at the end of the 2011 season qualify for the fifth EBT Masters to be held at Dream-Bowl Palace in Unterföhring near Munich, Germany on April 30 and May 1, 2012. The event will become the first EBT Masters to be contested on single lane condition.
