19 PABCON member federations to bowl for medals in Singles and Doubles

2011PAGLogo.jpg The Pan American Games are an Americas version of the Olympic Games which includes the Olympic program sports and others that are not part of the Olympics. The 16th edition of the prestigious event got underway Oct. 15 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 30 in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Tenpin bowling is one of 47 medal sports. Competition features Singles and Doubles and will be held from Oct. 24 to 27 at Tapatío Bowling Center in Guadalajara.

A total of 19 Pan American Bowling Confederation member federations - Aruba, Bahamas, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, United States, Venezuela and the host country Mexico - will participate in this event.

15 countries qualified for the Games in each division - men and women - at the 2009 PABCON Championships held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Mexico as host will be the 16th country participating.

Each team in the men's and women's division consists of two players or total 32 men and 32 women.

Women's Division: Aruba, Bahamas, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, United States and Venezuela.
Note: Panama, which qualified for the women's event, declined and was replaced by Bahamas.

Men's Division: Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, United States and Venezuela.

The doubles event will feature two six game blocks. A different oil pattern will be used in each block (patterns - one short and one medium - will be announced during the team managers meeting on Oct. 22). After 12 games, the top three men and the top three women will be awarded the gold, silver and bronze medals.

The singles competition starts with two six-game blocks of qualifying. The top 16 qualifiers in each division will bowl an elimination round of three games with the #1 qualifier meeting #16, the #2 meeting #15, and so on.

The winners will be defined by the accumulated pins knocked down in all three games. The winners will move on to the quarterfinals, the losers will be eliminated.

The four bowlers with the highest pinfall total for three games in the quarterfinals will advance to the semifinals in best-of-three games format. The first bowler to win two games will be the winner. The two semifinal winners will bowl for gold and silver medals. The losers of the semifinals will share the bronze medals.

Diandra Asbaty and Tennelle Milligan won the title in women's doubles and Rhino Page and Cassidy Schaub took gold in men's doubles. In the Singles finals, Milligan defeated Alicia Marcano, Venezuela, 2-1, while Page topped Mexico's Daniel Falconi, also 2-1.
