Frederick Ong, Zandra Aziela lead SEA Games Masters competition at halfway point

    2011SEAGamesLogo.jpg Frederick Ong of the Philippines and Malaysia's Zandra Aziela led the men's and women's Masters competition of the 26th Southeast Asian Games after the first eight match play games on the 45 ft long oil pattern Saturday at Jaya Ancol Bowling Center in Jakarta, Indonesia.

    Singles champion Ong won all but the eighth game averaging 222.38 for the round. He added 70 pins bonus (10 per win) to his 1779 pinfall to lead the 16-player men's field with 1849 total. His compatriot Biboy Rivera was second with 1806 including a 6-2 match play record.

    Place 3-5 belonged to Malaysians Muhd Syafiq Ridhwan (1767), Zulmazran Zulkifli (1755) and Adrian Ang (1732) with Raoul Miranda, Philippines in sixth place at 1724.

    Aziela topped the women's Masters with 1772 pinfall total including a 5-3 match play record and the field-best 215.25 average. Cherie Tan, Singapore was mere three pins behind with 1769 and a 5-2-1 won-loss-tie record.

    Malaysians Sharon Koh and Sin Li Jane were in third and fourth place with 1754 and 1705, respectively. Places 5-7 belonged to Singaporeans Daphne Tan (1676), Shayna Ng (1654) and Jazreel Tan (1635).

    The top 16 men and women in All Events will return on Sunday for another seven games of match play plus one game position round on the 35 ft short oil pattern after which both divisions will be cut to the top three, who will advance to the stepladder finals.

    No. 3 bowls No. 2 in a single-game match. The winner will meet the No. 1 seed in the title match with the two-game total determining the gold medalist.

    30 women and 41 men from seven countries - Brunei (men only), Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam (men only) compete in the 26th SEA Games bowling competition for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, Trios, Teams and Master match play.
