    2006 European Rankings

    Edited 06/06/06

2005EBT15JasonBelmonte2.jpg Australian Jason Belmonte made history when he received 60 ranking points for finishing fourth in the Aalborg International to become the first non-European bowler to lead the European rankings.

Belmonte, one of the players that use a two-handed delivery, has cashed 310 ranking points in four EBT "major" tournaments. Besides the 4-place finish in Aalborg, the Aussie finished third in the Ballmaster, won the tournament in Thessalonica, landed in second place in Istanbul.

Second place in the men's rankings belongs to another "two-hander", Osku Palermaa from Finland, who was mere one point behind Belmonte before Aalborg. Palermaa earned 44 points for finishing 8th in the rankings for 293 ranking point total.

Lasse Lintila.jpg Paul_Moor_4064.jpg Previous leader and two-time defending ranking champion Paul Moor (left), England, fell to third place with 251 points after failing to make the cut to the finals in Aalborg. Aalborg champion Lasse Lintilä (right) won his second "major" after the Ballmaster Open in January to move into fourth place with 208 points.

2004VOBrittBrondsted1.jpg Two-time defending women's ranking champion Britt Bröndsted (left) of Denmark widened her lead to 77 points after a third-place finish in the women's rankings in Aalborg. The 2003 World Ranking Masters queen leads the rankings after 9/20 events with 400 points. England's Zara Glover has received ranking points in all nine events thus far to sit in second position with 323 points.

Third place belongs to Helen Johnsson, Sweden, who finished second in Aalborg, with 215 points. Aalborg women's ranking champion Anja Ginge Jensen, Denmark, leapfrogged into 11th place with 139 points.

The top 8 men and top 8 women in the rankings at the end of the season qualify for the 2007 World ranking Masters to be held in Doha, Qatar.

Players from the Asian and American Zone can qualify for the WRM through the European Bowling Tour. According to ETBF Vice President Kim Thorsgaard Jensen, Denmark, even professional bowlers such as Brian Voss or Mika Koivuniemi are eligible to qualify and bowl in the World Ranking Masters.

Kim_Thorsgaard-Jensen_1104.jpg "PBA members, as long as they have a valid membership in one of the WTBA member federations in addition, ARE eligible for participation in the WRM," wrote Thorsgaard Jensen (pictured). "It was changed already for the WRM 2005, since the WTBA Presidium changed the status of the WRM from championship to tournament. The change was ratified at the Aalborg congress."

It hasn't happened yet but it is possible as all tournaments of the European Bowling Tour are open to professional bowlers - both men and women. And ALL women - amateur or pro - receive 8 pins handicap each game.

The European Bowling Tour takes a one-week break before heading to the Netherlands for one of the remaining three regular EBT tournaments, The Dutch Open 2006 at Dolfijn Bowling in Scheveningen, Netherlands, June 7-11, 2006.
