A little rest helps Texas bowler move into USBC Women's Championships Division 1 Singles lead

2006USBCWomensChampionshipLogo.jpg Oh, the agony and the ecstasy of competition. As bowler Cathy Woessner participated in the team portion of the 2006 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships presented by the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus, she was anything but pleased with her performance on June 3. But what a difference a day and a little rest made.

"Saturday night in team competition, I couldn't do much of anything," recalled Woessner of Euless, Texas. "I just couldn't find a good shot. We had just driven in and our bodies were still on Central time. I wasn't aggressive enough and couldn't find the shot. I believe it was there, I just wasn't releasing the ball correctly. So I thought it would probably affect doubles and singles bowling on Sunday."

Woessner's less than stellar team effort didn't last long, as the next day things turned around for her in doubles and singles. With games of 232, 234 and 244 for a 710 series, Woessner moved into first place in Division 1 Singles, as well as fourth place in Division 1 All-Events.

Bowling in her fifth Women's Championships, she rolled a 465 series in team, and a 644 in doubles to go along with her 710 in singles, for an 1,819 in all-events. While she knew she was able to redeem herself in doubles and singles, Woessner, who holds a 183 average, expressed surprise that she rose to the top of the leader boards.

"I didn't realize what the high score was," she claimed. "Usually, I just bowl my best and hope for the best. I was not aware how well I was bowling. I do know I was feeling much better after a good night's sleep."

With the dawn of a new day, and a good night's rest, Woessner, 69, realized that the ball - and the game - were rolling much smoother. "I knew I finally had found a good shot and it lasted through singles, so that was nice," she added.

Like a lot of bowlers, Woessner's trek to Reno's National Bowling Stadium is a built-in vacation. She and fiancé James Brown, whom she met through bowling, will tie the knot this Sept. 23. The couple enjoys bowling tournaments in the Southwest, but for now, Woessner's enjoying her moment in the first-place spotlight.

"I just hope my standing holds up," she said.
