96 girls from 29 countries kicked off the 12th World Youth Championships Sunday, June 24th, at Blu-O Paragon Bowling Center in Bangkok, Thailand, with the Singles preliminaries.

Hee Kar Yen of Malaysia (pictured left) finished atop the leaderboard posting a 1298 six-game series on long oil to lead the top 4 players into Tuesday's finals. Joining Hee in the playoffs were Kim Seon-Jeong of Korea (right), Juliana Franco of Colombia and Cristina Rodriguez of Puerto Rico.

The 96 players were equally divided into two squads. Hee set the tone with games of 214, 212, 194, 215, 269 and 194, an average of 216.33 for six games, and never looked back. Kim, who started with a 689 series for the first thee games (204, 248, 237), finished with 203, 180 and 219 to fall seven pins short with 1291.

Franco (left) led the second squad with 1280 after finishing her set with a huge 256 game to move into third place in the overall standings.

Rodriguez (right), who had six games between 225 and 191, took the fourth and last place for the finals with 1260 or an average of 210.00.

Kana Shimoide of Japan, who was in third place after Squad 1 with 1259, missed the playoffs by just one pin to finish in fifth place. Hwang Yeon-Ju of Korea, who led the first squad after five games, had to settle for sixth place, also with 1259, after finishing her series with a 147 game.

Places 7 and 8 belonged to Singapore's Ilma Nur Jannah and Nathida Sertluecha from the host country Thailand with 1244 and 1226.

Bethany Hedley of England was the best European player with 1221. She led the second squad after five games with 1096. Needing a 203 final game to overtake Hee Kar Yen, the English girl suffered a disastrous 125 game to slip all the way out of the medals to ninth place.

Rounding out the top 10 was Sin Li Jane of Malaysia with 1218. Her compatriot, 2011 adult world champion in Singles, Jacqueline Sijore, was one spot behind with 1216.

29th place Olivia Montoya of Mexico fired the field-best 290 in the fourth game of her 1176 series.

The World Youth Championships continues with the Boys Singles. The 178 players from 47 countries were split into four squads. Squad A takes to the lanes on Sunday, while Squads B, C and D will bowl their preliminaries on Monday.

The Girls and Boys Finals with be staged from Noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26th.

The 12th World Youth Championships takes place at Blu-O Paragon Bowling Center in Bangkok, Thailand, from June 22 - July 3, 2012.

274 girls and boys from record 48 countries, who must not have reached their 21st birthday on January 1, 2012, will compete will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, four-player Team event, All Events and Masters in the ten-day event.

The WTBA patterns "Mexico City" and "Atlanta" will be used in Bangkok. The 45-foot Mexico City pattern is the second-longest of the twelve WTBA certified lane pattern (four short, four medium and four long). With a length of 38 feet, the Atlanta pattern is the shortest of the four medium pattern.

Singles is being played on "Mexico City" and Doubles will be contested on "Atlanta", while the Team event will feature both oil patterns (3 games on each pattern). The Masters will be staged on dual lane condition (one lane dressed with the medium pattern and the other lane dressed with the long pattern).

The top four players and teams after six games in Singles, Doubles and Team, respectively, will advance to the semifinals. The No. 1 meets No. 4 and No. 2 takes on No. 3. The winners will determine the World Youth Champion, while the losers will share the bronze medal. All matches are single-game matches.
