2006USBCWomensChampionshipLogo.jpg Until she learned of it 48 hours later by long-distance phone, Carol Hausman didn't realize she had taken over first place in Division 2 Singles at the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships presented by the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus.

"I'm out here on the softball field in Port Charlotte (Fla.), where my husband coaches a girls' fast-pitch team," reported the 60-year-old Hausman, who rolled a 632 on Thursday (190, 194 and 248) to move into first place ahead of Judith Kaufman (620 pinfall) of Winslow, Ill. "I knew I did pretty well in singles, but it never occurred to me to check the standings. I'm really pleasantly surprised."

Currently sporting a 159 average (down from 180 a few years ago), Hausman took to bowling naturally as a seven-year-old, whose parents had owned a bowling center in upstate Palmyra, N.Y., for 20 years.

She was a last minute fill-in with the Florida Funtime Friends, when one of the team regulars couldn't make the trip to Reno. "This is the best I've ever bowled singles," she admitted. "I was doing ok, hanging in there, but after we changed lanes things started happening. The new lanes seemed to like me better. I've got a small breaking hook, and with my light [12-pound] ball, I needed to stand to the far right and angle up, which is different from my style back home."

Back home is Port Charlotte's Treasure Lanes, between Fort Myers and Sarasota, where Hausman bowls once a week and also works as a billing account specialist for a medical imaging company.
