Three-time Professional Bowlers Association Senior Tour titlist Harry Sullins (pictured left) of Chesterfield Twp., Mich., averaged 237.7 to emerge as the first round leader Sunday in the PBA Senior Decatur Open presented by Brunswick at Spare Time Lanes.

Sullins bowled a 1,902 eight-game pinfall total with games of 221, 237, 265, 213, 279, 251, 216 and 220 to hold a 61-pin lead over Hall of Famer Wayne Webb (right) of Columbus, Ohio, in the final tournament of the 2012 season.

"I was trying to make a decision on two balls that I wanted to use," said Sullins, who is also a five-time PBA Tour titlist. "At the last minute I decided to go with a new ball that I drilled during practice and it was the right one because I was able to use it for the whole block.

"I've made match play in all but one tournament this season but I just can't make it to the top eight," Sullins said. "My goal right now is to finish the season with a good tournament and make a run for the win."

Senior Player of the Year points leader, Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. (left) of Ocala, Fla., qualified 22nd in the first round with contenders Hugh Miller (right) of Seattle, 12 points behind, qualifying 68th, and Mike Edwards (below left) of Tulsa, who is third in the race 14 points behind, qualifying fifth.

A second-place finish or better will clinch Senior Player of the Year for Williams. Both Miller and Edwards have to win for any chance at the title.

Bowling in his final Senior Tour tournament, PBA Hall of Famer Dave Soutar (right) of Bradenton, Fla., who announced his retirement after 51 years of PBA competition earlier this season ended the day in a tie for 61st. Soutar is an 18-time PBA Tour winner and seven-time winner on the Senior Tour and was voted PBA's 20th greatest player of all-time in 2009.

The field will bowl another eight-game qualifying round Monday after which the field will be cut to the top 32 players who will advance to match play Tuesday morning. Round of 8 and championship rounds get underway at 6 p.m. CT on Tuesday.

The PBA Senior Decatur Open is being streamed live on the PBA's online bowling channel Xtra Frame.
