Peter Hellström cruises to victory at 2012 Norwegian Open by Brunswick

    2012EBT17PeterHellstrom.jpg Peter Hellström (pictured left) of Sweden averaged 249 for his last six games to cruise to victory at the Norwegian Open 2012 by Brunswick Sunday, Oct. 14, at Veitvet Bowling Center in Oslo, Norway.

    Hellström led the top eight players into the fifth and last three-game round and carrying forward 742 pins. The Swede added 234 and 243 in games 4 & 5 and sealed the victory with a huge 275 in game six for 1494 pinfall total.

    Hellström received 30.000 Norwegian Kronor or roughly 4.000 Euro for his second title on the European Bowling Tour after his victory in the Les Lion Cup 2003.

    2012EBT17BrittBrondsted2.jpg2012EBT17MikaelRoos.jpg Three-time EBT point ranking leader Britt Brøndsted (left) of Denmark, who finished her 738 series in Round 4 with the second 300 game of the tournament, maintained second place finishing with 81 pins behind Hellström with 1413 including 8 pins handicap each game.

    The win in the women's ranking in Oslo marked the 15th time that Brøndsted has won the women's ranking in an EBT tournament.

    Mikael Roos (right) of Sweden finished with 248 to beat out the lone Norwegian bowler in the Round of 8, Svein Åke Ek (below right), for third place by 14 pins, 1352 to 1338.

    2012EBT17SveinAkeEk.jpgBrøndsted earned 20.000 NOK for second place, Roos got 15.000 for third and Ek pocketed 10.000 for fourth place.

    Places 5-7 belonged to Swedish bowlers Filip Wilhelmsson (5th; 1319), Joline Persson-Planefors (6th; 1301) and Christian Karlsson (7th; 1289). Competing in her first tournament since the 2011 Women's World Championships, three-time EBT Masters winner Kamilla Kjeldsen of Denmark finished in eighth place with 1231.

    2012NorwegianOpenLogo.jpg The Norwegian Open 2012 by Brunswick, which was held from Oct. 5-14 at 26-lane Veitvet Bowling Center in Oslo, Norway, was the 17th event of the 2012 European Bowling Tour and the sixth out of seven EBT "Satellite" tournaments this season.

    180 Players, 149 men and 31 women, from ten countries competed for an increased total prize fund of approx. 25.700 Euro (194.000 Norwegian Kronor). The winner received the 3.980 € top prize (30.000 NOK), the runner-up earned 2.650 (20.000 NOK) and the third finisher got 1.990 Euro (15.000 NOK), respectively.

    The qualifying of the Norwegian Open ran from Friday, Oct. 5 through Saturday, Oct. 13. Women received 8 pins handicap each game, a standard on the European Bowling Tour

    A total of 40 players qualified for the finals on Sunday, Oct. 14:
    • the top 36 players from the overall qualifying standings
    • two players from a separate leaderboard of Squad 1-6, who are not among the top 36
    • and one player each from the Turbo 1 and 2 list (highest score in qualifying game 5 and 6, respectively; separate fee necessary).

    The top 8 qualifiers received three byes, players in 9th through 16th place earned two byes and places 17-24 bypassed the first round of the finals. The remaining 16 players started the finals which consisted of five three-game rounds on Sunday morning, Oct. 14.

    Each of the first four rounds started at scratch with the top eight players advancing while players in 9th through 16th place were eliminated. The field was trimmed to 32, 24, 16 and then eight players, who determined the champion in a final three-game round with the pinfall from Round 4 carried over.

    The player with the highest six-game total of Round 4 and 5 earned the title, 50 ranking points and the 30.000 NOK top prize.

    BowlingdigitalBanner.gif Bowlingdigital covered the Norwegian Open 2012 live from Veitvet Bowling Center in Oslo with stories and results after each round. Live coverage started Oct. 11 with qualifying Squad 7 and ran all the way through to the finals on Sunday, Oct. 14.

    2012EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2012 European Bowling Tour is made up of 19 events in 16 countries including two Platinum, four Gold, six Silver and seven Satellite tournaments.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish in the event. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament such as the Norwegian Open gets 50 ranking points.

    Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 16 men and top 16 women who will compete in the sixth EBT Masters in Bratislava, Slovakia in Sept. 2013.
