Record team score highlights lead changes at USBC Women's Championships

2006USBCWomenTogetherOnceAgain.jpg Together Once Again of North Richland Hills, Texas, set the all-time record team series Thursday, taking the lead in Classic Division with 3,350 at the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships presented by Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus.

Tammy Boomershine led Together Once Again with a 707 series, followed by Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (686), Andrea Fleming (676), Lynda Barnes (642) and Cathy Dorin-Lizzi (639) at the National Bowling Stadium. The team series eclipsed the previous record of 3,327 set by High Roller-Cherry Hills, N.J. of Henderson, Nev., bowled in 2002.

"We were definitely a team last night, and everyone bowled well," said Dorin-Ballard, who serves as the USBC High School spokesperson. "I got to take the lead with my sister and some of my best friends. We've bowled together for a long time, and since we are friends, we don't have to impress each other so we help each other, too."

Together Once Again got off to a hot start, shooting 1,185 in the opener and closing with games of 998 and 1,167. Even after the strong start, Dorin-Ballard said the focus was just on winning, not setting records.

"I don't think any of us were looking at a record; we just wanted to take the lead if we could," Dorin-Ballard said. "Our score just happened to be a record. Like the old saying, records are meant to be broken I guess."

The team event record was just one of many leaderboard changes in the Classic Division. Since the USBC Queens begins June 17, many Classic Division bowlers arrived in town early to compete in the Women's Championships this week.

2006USBCWomenKarenStroud.jpg Karen Stroud of Victoria, Texas, overtook the lead in two events Friday night. She topped Classic Singles with 771 and moved into the lead in Classic All-Events with 2,159.

Stroud, who teamed with Brenda Norman to win the Classic Doubles title last year and was also the runner up to Barnes in the 1998 Queens, had games of 278, 235 and 258 in her singles effort. She added 744 in doubles and 644 in team.

2006USBCWomenLeanneBarretteLaurenTakahashi.jpg Meanwhile, defending all-events and singles champion Leanne Barrette of Elk Grove, Calif., moved into the top spot in Classic Doubles along with her partner Lauren Takahashi of Woodland Hills, Calif. The pair totaled 1,466 to take the lead by 55 pins.

Barrette (left) had games of 248, 257 and 235 for a 740 series while Takahashi contributed 726 on games of 233, 245 and 248.

"Lauren and I are great friends and to be able to share a title together would be amazing," said Barrette, who added 755 in singles and 557 in team for 2,052 all-events. "There are a couple of strong teams we know who are bowling next weekend, so we wanted to get all we could to put up a big number."
