Maurizio Celli (pictured left) of Italy set the pace in the 1st Florence International on the opening day of qualifying Saturday at Crazy Bowling in Florence, Italy.

The Italian national team member sandwiched back-to-back 218, a high game of 264 and 201 between a pair of 180s in Squad 2 to lead a field of 78 players from Austria, Italy, Philippines, Romania and Slovenia with 1264 pinfall total and an average of 210.67.

His fellow countrymen Saverio Tuccimei and Stefano Oddi were close behind in Squad 2 (the first squad on each day takes place only if the other squads on that day are fully booked) with 1230 and 1225 to sit in second and third place, respectively.

Slovenian international Anže Grabrijan (right) used a pair of 215s and a pair of 205 games to lead Squad 3 with 1219 en route to move into fourth place in the overall qualifying standings.

The top four players of the first two days of qualifying will earn automatic berths into the finals on Sunday, Nov. 11. Erminio Vettoretti (left) of Italy, who led Squad 4 on Saturday evening, sits in sixth place with 1186.

Maja Debenec (right) of Slovenia was the best of nine women in the field in eighth place with 1177 including 48 pins handicap. Raffaele Formisano of Italy set the early cutoff number for 38th place with 1069 (178.17 average).

Qualifying continues Sunday, Nov. 4 with Squads 5-9 scheduled for 8 a.m., 11.30 a.m., 3, 6.30 and 10 p.m. CET.

The Florence International is the 18th and penultimate event of the 2012 European Bowling Tour and the last of seven EBT "Satellite" tournaments this season. Players will compete for total prize fund of 29.960 Euro with 5.500 € going to the winner while the runner-up receives 2.800 €.

The qualifying of the Florence International runs from Saturday, Nov. 3 through Saturday, Nov. 10 and concludes with Squad 30 scheduled for 6.30 p.m. local time (CET). Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, a standard on the European Bowling Tour.

A total of 50 players will qualify for the finals on Sunday, Nov. 11:

• the top 38 players from the overall qualifying standings
• four players each from the leader boards of Nov. 3-4 squads and Nov. 5-7 squads
• and the top 4 of the one-game Desperado Squad

The top 8 qualifiers receive three byes, players in 9th to 16th place earn two byes and places 17 to 30 bypass the first round of the finals. The remaining 20 players bowl four games scratch with the top 10 meeting the qualifiers 17-30 in Round 2. The top 8 advance to the first round of single-elimination match play.

In each round the highest seeded player meets the lowest seeded player, the second highest player meets the second lowest player etc. All matches are two-games, total pins format. The field will be trimmed to 16, 8, 4 and then two players, who will determine the champion.

The 2012 European Bowling Tour is made up of 19 events in 16 countries including two Platinum, four Gold, six Silver and seven Satellite tournaments.

The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish in the event. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament such as the Florence International gets 50 ranking points.

Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 16 men and top 16 women who will compete in the sixth EBT Masters in Bratislava, Slovakia in Sept. 2013.
