Swede Martin Paulsson shoots into second place in Florence International

    Six players of Squads 20 & 21 crack the top 10 in the overall qualifying standings; cut for 38th place surpasses 1200-mark (1204)

Amedeo Spada (right) of Italy leads the 262-player field from 20 countries with 1470 (245 average).

    Paulsson, the reigning World Champion in Doubles (with Mathias Ã…rup), rolled games of 234, 191, 279, 237, 216 and 235 in the first squad on Thursday afternoon (Squad 19 was cancelled), which was dominated by Swedish bowlers.

Nilsson led the squad after five games but had to settle for third place behind a 150 final game.

    Konstantin Matvienko of Russia (1312) and another Swede, Timothy Andreason (1304), also cracked the 1300-bar to take over eighth and ninth place.

    Rounding out the top 10 was Samuli Tiainen (below left) of Finland, who led the 21st squad on Thursday night with 1296 (216.00) including high games of 257, 253 and 246.

    Heidi Thorstensen of Norway is the best of 28 women in the field in fourth place with 1354 total including 48 pins handicap, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    Dutch international Lisanne Breeschoten (below right) slipped to 38th and last place to advance with 1204.

    Qualifying continues Friday, Nov. 9 with Squads 22-26 scheduled for 8 and 11.30 a.m., 3, 6.30 and 10 p.m. CET.

    2012FlorenceInternationalLogo.jpg 2012EBT18LisanneBreeschoten.jpgThe Florence International is the 18th and penultimate event of the 2012 European Bowling Tour and the last of seven EBT "Satellite" tournaments this season. Players will compete for total prize fund of 29.960 Euro with 5.500 € going to the winner while the runner-up receives 2.800 €.

    The qualifying of the Florence International runs from Saturday, Nov. 3 through Saturday, Nov. 10 and concludes with Squad 30 scheduled for 6.30 p.m. local time (CET). Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, a standard on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 50 players will qualify for the finals on Sunday, Nov. 11:
    • the top 38 players from the overall qualifying standings
    • four players each from the leader boards of Nov. 3-4 squads and Nov. 5-7 squads
    • and the top 4 of the one-game Desperado Squad

    The top 8 qualifiers receive three byes, players in 9th to 16th place earn two byes and places 17 to 30 bypass the first round of the finals. The remaining 20 players bowl four games scratch with the top 10 meeting the qualifiers 17-30 in Round 2. The top 8 advance to the first round of single-elimination match play.

    In each round the highest seeded player meets the lowest seeded player, the second highest player meets the second lowest player etc. All matches are two-games, total pins format. The field will be trimmed to 16, 8, 4 and then two players, who will determine the champion.

    2012EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2012 European Bowling Tour is made up of 19 events in 16 countries including two Platinum, four Gold, six Silver and seven Satellite tournaments.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish in the event. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament such as the Florence International gets 50 ranking points.

    Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 16 men and top 16 women who will compete in the sixth EBT Masters in Bratislava, Slovakia in Sept. 2013.
