Amedeo Spada wins qualifying at Florence International

    Italian leads 296-player field from 22 countries with 1470 (245 average); total 50 players advance to Sunday's finals

    2012EBT16MartinPaulsson2.jpgAmedeo Spada (pictured left) of Italy won the qualifying of the 1st Florence International to lead total 50 players into Sunday's finals at Crazy Bowling in Florence, Italy.

    Spada, who owns one European Bowling Tour title (Vienna Open, 2004), posted a 1470 series in Squad 14 including the lone 300 game of the tournament so far to finish atop the leaderboard of 296 players, 264 men and 32 women, from 22 countries.

    Daniel Vezis of England, the only other player who cracked the 1400-bar, was second with 1420. World Champion Martin Paulsson (right) of Sweden was third with 1392 and was followed by Marek Talpa of Czech Republic in fourth place with 1375 and Saverio Tuccimei of Italy with 1373.

Heidi Thorstensen (left) of Norway was the best woman in eighth place with 1354 including 48 pins handicap. The top 8 qualifiers received three byes.

    Three-time European Bowling Tour point ranking winner Paul Moor (right) of England led the 29th qualifying squad on Saturday afternoon with 1339 to leap into 11th place in the overall standings. The players in 9th to 16th place earned two byes.

    2012EBT18AlexandrPanchenko.jpg2012EBT18JosefineLinderoth.jpgThe two other squad leaders on Saturday, Alexandr Panchenko (left) of Kazakhstan, who led Squad 28 with 1293 and Anže Grabrijan of Slovenia, who led the 30th and last squad with 1274, moved into 22nd and 28th place, respectively. The players, who finished in 17th to 30th place, will bypass the first round of the finals.

    Josefine Linderoth (right) of Sweden hit the cutoff number for 38th place with 1250. The top 38 qualifiers will be joined in the finals by eight Italian bowlers who qualified through separate leader boards of Squads 1-9 and 10-18.

Four out of 31 players managed a 200-plus game to earn a berth into the finals. The group was led by two women, Dutch Cheska Tomas (left) and Bettina Lund (right) of Denmark, with 221 and 219, resp. Giuseppe Frascati and Italy and Roel Mol, Netherlands, took the last two spots with 207 and 203, resp.

    Qualifiers 31 to 38 plus the eight wild cards and the four desperados advanced to the first round of the finals starting at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning.

    2012FlorenceInternationalLogo.jpg The Florence International is the 18th and penultimate event of the 2012 European Bowling Tour and the last of seven EBT "Satellite" tournaments this season. Players will compete for total prize fund of 29.960 Euro with 5.500 € going to the winner while the runner-up receives 2.800 €.

    The qualifying of the Florence International ran from Saturday, Nov. 3 through Saturday, Nov. 10. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, a standard on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 50 players qualified for the finals on Sunday, Nov. 11:
    • the top 38 players from the overall qualifying standings
    • four players each from the leader boards of Nov. 3-4 squads and Nov. 5-7 squads
    • and the top 4 of the one-game Desperado Squad

    The top 8 qualifiers receive three byes, players in 9th to 16th place earn two byes and places 17 to 30 bypass the first round of the finals. The remaining 20 players bowl four games scratch with the top 10 meeting the qualifiers 17-30 in Round 2. The top 8 advance to the first round of single-elimination match play.

    In each round the highest seeded player meets the lowest seeded player, the second highest player meets the second lowest player etc. All matches are two-games, total pins format. The field will be trimmed to 16, 8, 4 and then two players, who will determine the champion.

    2012EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2012 European Bowling Tour is made up of 19 events in 16 countries including two Platinum, four Gold, six Silver and seven Satellite tournaments.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish in the event. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament such as the Florence International gets 50 ranking points.

    Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 16 men and top 16 women who will compete in the sixth EBT Masters in Bratislava, Slovakia in Sept. 2013.
