Catalin Gheorghe leads day three qualifying at the 3rd IDM Bucharest Open



    Romanian shoots 1274 on day three qualifying to maintain third place; cut for 22nd place is now 1119 (186.50)

    2012BOCatalinGheorghe.jpg2012BORomeoGagenoiu2.jpgCatalin Gheorghe (pictured left) of Romania rolled a 1274 six-game series Wednesday at IDM Club in Bucharest, Romania, to maintain third place in the qualifying at the 3rd IDM Bucharest International Bowling Open.

    Gheorghe, who had a 1267 series on Tuesday, improved his high series by seven pins in Squad 11 following games of 223, 203, 216, 205, 181 and 246, an average of 212.33.

    His compatriots and fellow Romanian national team members, Romeo Gagenoiu (right) and Marius Piticariu (below left), continued to lead the field of 58 players from Cyprus, England, Greece, Israel and Romania with 1336 and 1298, respectively.

    2012BOMariusPiticariu.jpg2012BODimitrisKaretsos.jpgRounding out the top 4 was Dimitris Karetsos (right) of Greece, who tied Gheorghe in Squad 8 on Tuesday night at 1267. The top 4 after the first 16 squads (Monday through Thursday) will earn automatic berths into Sunday's finals.

    Viorel Simut of Romania, who led the last Squad Wednesday with 1250, slipped to fifth place with 1257. Sixth place belonged to Squad 10 leader (1195) Ioan Ionescu, Romania, with 1242.

    Cristian Calagiu, Romania, topped the bowlers of Squad 9 with 1235 including high game of 242 and 253 to leap into seventh place. The top 8 at the end of the qualifying will earn one bye for the finals.

    Maria Ursu, Romania, is the best of six women in the field but the sole above the cut line in 17th place with 1143 including 48 pins handicap. Marin Udriste, Romania, holds the 22nd and last place to advance with 1119 and an average of 186.50.

    Qualifying continues Thursday with Squads 13-16 scheduled for noon, 3, 6 and 9 p.m. CET+1.

    2012BucharestOpenLogo.jpg The 3rd IDM Bucharest International Bowling Open will be held Nov. 19-25 at 14-lane IDM Club in Bucharest, Romania (Oil Pattern). The tournament offers total prize fund of 15.000 Euro in the open division and additional 1.800 Euro for bowlers with less than 180 average.

    The tournament winner will receive the 2.500 Euro top prize, the runner-up earns 1.500 Euro and the third and fourth place finishers get 1.000 Euro apiece.

    The qualifying of the Bucharest Open runs from Monday, Nov. 19 through Saturday, Nov. 24 and concludes with Squad 24 scheduled for 10.30 p.m. local time CET+1 and the Desperado Squad following immediately. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game.

    A total of 24 players will qualify for the finals on Sunday, Nov. 25 including the top 4 of a separate leaderboard of the squads on Monday through Thursday, the top 18 of the overall qualifying standings and the top 2 of the one-game Desperado Squad.

    Players seeded 9th to 24th will bowl six games scratch with the top 8 advancing to the second round. The remaining 16 players will bowl another six games scratch to cut to the top eight, who will determine the champion in best-of-three games match play format.
